Tied for number one with like most of the songs on this album and many of their others... perfection is perfection and few bands hit that lofty mark as often as Fates Warning did.
Agree. I wish they were more well known. They sure as hell deserve it. With John or Ray they're awesome. Even today, they do projects with both now which is cool. I just wish they got more recognition.
Imagine being 16 years old in 1986 and listening to this release on LP. I was mesmerized ... this was the most amazing piece of art I've ever heard, and it still makes me feel like that 16 year old.
The whole album is amazing. The power and beauty of it all gives a wide range of emotions as u listen. Very few albums can compare to this masterpiece.
@@bugalooanzal4564 Yep! Metal Shop.I remember hearing Fata Morgana and thinking,"Fuck man,I've found MY band! Bought Awaken on cassette shortly thereafter.Great times!
1986 has lomg been regarded as the BEST year in metal. Literally every band seemingly released a classic during that wonderful year. And this relase by FW rules them all. Master, Reign, and SIT bow down before this colossal meisterwork.
Wasn't Warning by Queensryche released or selling that same year? The Spectre Within from FW is also great. Especially when compared to what was around then. People compare them to Maiden, but they had their own style. I remember vividly how bizzare it was at first. All the strange times and added or skipped beats with totally alien guitar chord progressions and harmonies, same with the vocals, holy shit those melodies. Still one of my all time favorites.
I'm no prog metal fan but you can tell right off the bat this is no Dream Theater. It has complex harmonies, weird molodic choices, while DT is just poppy/boring music all jacked up together with a metal setting and lots of vituosity.
Never will a more masterful piece of music be written,or,performed.Every part of this song is perfect.Thank you,Matheos,DiBiase,Aresti,Arch, and Zimmerman for your service to art and music! You fine gentlemen, along with this masterpiece, inspired me to pursue my musical interests.

@@benedictdonald4338 I'm guessing it's about a protagonist stuck in some sort of hospital for invalids and questioning his god (guardian) why he and other innocent people ("Karen's been asleep forever...") have to go through such day-to-day hell with their handicaps, in a facility that feels like as much of prison as their crippled bodies and minds.
@@benedictdonald4338 It's about a man whose daughter Karen is in a coma, and he watches over her desperately hoping for the day she awakens from the living death she suffers. He's so close and yet impossibly far, unable to communicate with her yet he believes she somehow in her slumber knows he's near and watching over her. She, trapped in darkness for no reason that she can understand, prays to whatever gods or eternal forces that she be freed from her prison of endless sleep and allowed to live. He, helpless to do more than simply watch over her and protect her as best he can, prays that if that is to be his role then let him play it eternally --if he dies before her, he wishes to be allowed to return as her guardian angel. ...and now you're crying. Join the club.
Dieses Album und gerade diesen song werde ich mit Fata Morgana lieben bis aufs Sterbebett! Wer da kalt bleibt ist schon tot und weiß es nur selbst noch nicht!
I remember walking around in The Wall and seeing the album art. Once I saw that it was Fates Warning I though "Dream Theater loves these dudes!" so I bought it without hesitation. GODDAMN. I couldn't stop listening to this record for the longest times. Still in my top 5 to this day and has had a tremendous impact on my playing and writing. So good!

I was extremely lucky to be exposed to fates warning in my late adolescence. It was around 2009. Still blow this album often upon waking up. Good fucking days, makes me forget about the fucked up early 30s shits.
This was the song that separated Fates from all the metal bands following the Iron Maiden/Judas Priest model, and they carved out a new genre of progressive metal, with amazing riffs, lyrics and mood for the next 40 years
Fates will always be and I believe in the message of metal and the right side of music isn't necessarily pleasant. Like songs about death you have no reason to fear. It's people not the songs they made which should be cause for concern. Tony the Terrible I hear is the good guy.... maybe.🧚
