When I was fourth fifth and sixth grade… Croce put out hits like Michael Jackson or Jackson Browne …I laid in my bedroom for hours listening to his albums over and over again… I believe I became a poet Because of his fathers influence
It is difficult to overstate how popular Jim Croce was when I was in high school. You couldn't turn on the radio without hearing one of his beautiful songs
We, on a personal level, felt the loss of Jim Croce as if he was a close relative. I feel that loss every time I listen to his music. It's bitter/sweet.
I just started crying when I heard that after his Father died and his Mother saw another man later on that man beat him severely and he lost his eye sight. Also, hearing that out of respect for his Dad he could not touch his music until many many years. A.J. also lost his wife. He has suffered terribly in this life but his attitude and outlook on life is still positive and hopeful. He is a graceful man and I wish him only the best. He is not just a worthy legacy but the great legacy of the great late Jim Croce. His Father would be proud of him.
I was on my way to work the next morning and heard about his death on the radio!!!!! 😥 It was so shocking and heartbreaking!!!!! 💔 Loved his songs!!!!! 💕 Sorry to hear his son had such a hard life!!!!! 😥 Bless him for becoming the man he is in spite of it all!!! So wonderful he can now sing his father's songs!!!! 🤗💖
It broke my heart! If Jim knew what that monster did to his baby, he would gave lost it! He would be rolling in his grave. So sad that he barely knew him. 😭
His songs were woven into my childhood, and they've remained special pieces of music ever since. I'll always stop a radio dial if it lands on Croce; his writing, arrangements and voice are still extraordinary!
I’m 70 years old. My teen years were filled with Jim’s music. I still listen to his albums on vinyl! This was a great story that bright back great memories. Lost him way too soon.
My favorite lyric ever.... "If I had a box just for wishes, and dreams that had never come true... The box would be empty except for the memory of how they were answered by you.". It's pure genius.... As were many of his lyrics. Gone way to soon....
I loved Jim Croce. I’m glad his son finally feels he can sing his father’s music. Time in a Bottle was the theme of my wedding. I love seeing AJ singing his father’s music. I’m so sorry for what he went through as a boy. Heartbreaking!
Time in a Bottle was played at our wedding, and now I sing it for my wife whenever we go out to karaoke. I have also done Photographs and Memories, Bad Bad Leroy Brown, You Don't Mess Around with Jim, and Operator. This is a singer-songwriter that wants he's touched your heart, you're never going to be able to forget him. I cannot believe the tragic story of his son, and I'm glad that the music lives on. I most certainly will be doing my part.
AJ is AMAZING! I am SO sorry he was a victim of domestic violence and has experienced so much loss~ what s resilient person he is. I hope he has happiness and safety after all he's been through.
A legend and he only broke out 3 years. We have his treasured voice and lyrics in that time. We loved him. Not your usual Hollywood kind and he loved deeply.
people were SOBBING unontrollably when Jim Croce died. They were devastated. It's really cool to see this story and the astonishing journey he's had and now the fact that he's providing this new album. BRAVO!
Croce played at my elementary school in early 70’s right before the crash. He had just become famous and most would’ve canceled those low paying school concerts but not Jim Croce he was a man of his word. For years I never knew how our school got a famous star to play for us and then I heard the story of how he kept his word to all the small schools he had booked even after he several 1 hits. I was in 2 or 3rd grade. Thank you Jim.
I never got to see Jim Croce, but Harry Chapin honored his word and continued to play at elementary schools. Happy to have seen him before his death. This was in NJ, around '73 or so.
I love, love, loved Jim Croce’s music, still do. He had an honest invisibility to the feelings of the soul. What a great tribute to the Musical artist so many of us listened to. I was devastated when I learned if his passing. His son isn’t quite a mirror of his Dad but very close in many ways. I am happy he is honoring him this way.
I live around the corner from that farmhouse. The state of PA put up a historical marker to mark the spot. I had no idea so much musical history took place at that little unassuming farm house.
I am sure that Jim would be so proud of A.J. and the man he has become. Hearing Croce's songs again made me melancholy and hopeful all at the same time.
AJ, your father was one of my biggest influences in playing the guitar and my learning how to learn finger picking. I remember saving up and I have all three music books for his three albums. I think it's time someone brings Jim Croce back in the public's eyes and who better than his son. You are a great talent and I'm sure your father is looking down and smiling! Peace, Love, Courage from David in Detroit.
I was devastated when Jim and Murray died in that crash. I was really looking forward to whatever else they had to share with us all. I'm so sorry that AJ had such a rough life, but he has come out on top and he will do well. A big hand shake and hug to the man, glad you're here with us all. BTW, for me, that one song is Operator. That one's deep.
@@rogerfox9028 I don't know that I've ever heard him play 12 string. I haven't heard much of his stuff, there was that one 2 record set that came out right after they died, and it had some on it. I wish I knew where that one went to, it's disappeared from my collection (along with about 5 copies of the first Hot Tuna album).
A solid CBS Sunday Morning telling of a father-son relationship. Kind thoughts for the families of the others killled in that September, 1973 plane crash: guitarist Murray Muehleisen, comedian George Stevens, Croce's road manager Dennis Rast, manager and booking agent Kenneth D. Cortose, along with the plane's pilot.
To be fair, Maury Muehleisen had a lot to do with Jim Croce's success. Jim never had a hit, never did much of anything, till he got with Maury. Maury was the missing piece that made Croce a success. Croce knew it too,, and without Maury he would've likely never made it. They were a great duo. Jim was actually Maury's backup guitar player, and he decided to do the same for Jim. He even started writing songs for Jim. Maury today is considered one of the most underrated guitar players. Also, the day Croce goes into the HOF, it will not be as a solo act, it will be him and Maury. It is not disrespectful to say it, but Croce would have been nothing without Maury. Kinda like how Sonny would've been nothing without Cher. Without Maury bringing life to all the Croce hits, we would not know of those songs today. Jim and Maury both lucked up and found each other, and became great together.
Jim Croce's passing always has had a profound impact on me. I was a junior in high school and loved his music. I was in a guitar group at church and we all marveled how well Jim Croce and Maury Muehleisen played together. They were both on that plane. A.J. Croce has done his Father proud.
Very emotional watching this my father passed away while listening to The music of Jim Croce. How appropriate on this Father’s Day to see Jim’s son reminisce about his father.
I feel a real connection to Jim and his music. My dad loved his songs and died just 6 months after Jim did. I was 9 and it left a giant hole in my life, but listening to 'Bad Bad Leroy Brown' and 'Time In a Bottle' brings my daddy back to me for just a little while
I loved His music as well, I used to request taxi and sequel to taxi on local all night radio while I was pregnant, the D.J. Would sometimes do one or the other but not both in one night, shortly after giving birth and having a multiply disabled child, I was still up all night, but it was a shock one night when that’s all he played,, I called the station to talk to the DJ .he said “ oh hun haven’t you heard? “ I was heart broken.❤❤❤ to his son
Jim Croche touched my life when I was a young teenager going through parental abuse and my Dad’s alcoholism. I love hearing his songs and they still bring me comfort 50 years later.
I Loved your Father! He helped me get through so much as a child and now I’m a senior and still listen to his music! I’m crying right now! I miss him Keep it going son! 🎤👍🏾👏🏾💖
What a heartbreaking story. Jim Croce was such a wonderful part of my early 20s music. Sad that his son had so much tragedy even after losing his father. Thanks for airing his story.
I was laying in a hospital bed after a near fatal head-on collision (July 3, 1973) when I heard the news of his death. I was devastated! Jim's music spoke to my soul more than any musician's had before. His music will live in me and still be here long after I am gone.
AJ, I miss your father to this day. He was an amazing musician and storyteller. You are a gifted musician in your own right. I feel so grateful to hear your singing voice and realize your talent. Your dad had such an impact on my growing years and beyond. His music was so different from the other great music of his era. So understandable and relatable that it made it popular.
@@speaktruth9631 I have to tell the story and that you have a podi to hear that and the other day I am not a big difference is a day or night in my head in my head in my head in my head in my head in my head in my head in
I remember vividly the radio announcement the Jim Croce died in a plane crash. This hit me so hard because he was by far one of my all time favorite singers in 1973!! I was 18 years old. Jim Croce needs to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!! So glad his son is playing and singing his fathers music! When I heard him sing I shut my eyes and swear I was hearing his father singing! You have such a beautiful voice!! God bless you always! 🙏🙏🙏💖
Chills and tears, both happy and sad, hearing that heartfelt music again; remembered sense of great loss at the accident; and hope hearing AJ's story of resilience, and his music. Music truly does run in that family!
I recall how hearing songs like Photographs & Memories, Time in a Bottle, and I Got A Name used to make me feel when I heard them on the radio back when I was a young teen in the early 70s; even more so when I heard about the plane crash in 1973. My hope and prayer for A. J. are for the very best in his life and music. It is truly amazing what music can do to a person. May God bless you A. J.
If you are reading this AJ, I'd like to say how proud your dad is of your courage, determination, resilience, and talent. I just know he's looking down and smiling. Best of luck to you and thanks for keeping your dad's legacy alive. ❤
Thank you AJ, I hope you've found the joy, sorrow, and love that is your fathers music I had as a young teenager and weeped at his death; still brings tears just thinking of his potential. Great for us the apple doesn't fall far from the tree..
I grew up in the 70's, not too far from Jim's home in the suburbs of Philly. I've always loved and appreciated his music, I've found that as I've aged It's difficult to listen to his music without shedding a tear or two, it simply touches your soul. His music can touch anyone, of any age, however, I feel those of us who lived through the 70's have a special connection to both the man and his music.
A true legend and his partner, the late Maury Muehleisen, created songs that have stood the test of time. So glad AJ is keeping the legacy alive while creating his own musical journey.
Grew up with his dads music...it affected me as a teenager in the 70’s...The world comes full circle 50 years later with his son singing his music once again!
I would like to give this a thousand likes. Jim Croce is one of the best musicians to have ever graced us with a gift beyond measure. I am so glad that his son can now carry on that legacy. 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
It's good to know that AJ has come out on top. His life hasn't been easy but he's at peace & moving on. Truly an inspirational story. Old lady here. I loved his dad's music. It was part of my teenage years & I was saddened by his death. It's wonderful to hear his music alive again w/AJ's voice.
It's wonderful that Jim Croce left a very talented musician son, wasn't aware of his offspring. I played Croce's music often while growing up in the '70s, made big impact on me and was recently listening to it again. Croce left a terrific musical legacy, glad his son is carrying on his tradition.
Oh man, I loved Jim Croce (still do). When I was a sophomore in HS a classmate and I did a multimedia (1976 technology) presentation about him for a language arts project. We got an A and everyone loved the presentation because everyone loved Jim Croce. His death was a couple of years or so prior. What a loss.
This is the only news program where at first I'm like "who cares?" And by the end I become a fan or have tears running down my face and a feeling of warmth Thank you CBS Sunday mornings show for brilliant weekly programing
I was blessed to see him live at Big Surf in Tempe Arizona. Such a brilliant talent; his light went out way too early. Didn’t know he had a son ..and what an inspiration he is❤️.
I love Jim Croce’s music. This really touched me. I’m so happy that his son has regained his sight! And that he’s singing, he has a wonderful voice! Great episode
I have seen AJ In Concert. He's awesome. I felt like a got a two for one with that. I was hoarse for days after that! Jim has a legacy in that young man and a good one at that!
Finally playing your father's music it's about time great job keep it alive Jim Croce was amazing big influence to me and many others Thank You For The Music Jim
Wow. This really brings back some memories. I was in 7th grade and my Social Studies teacher was a musician and a HUGE Jim Croce fan. Mr. would bring his guitar to class and sometimes during class and often after school he would sing for us. When Jim Croce died the fall of my 8th grade year, Mr. was devastated and many of my classmates were too because we loved our teacher and thru him loved Jim Croce. I'm really happy to hear AJ is singing the songs.
As a teenager in the 70's, I fell in love with Jim Croce's hauntingly melodic voice. When he suddenly passed away, it affected me deeply as his beautiful music was still so alive. A.J., watching this and hearing your voice singing your dad's songs was a full circle moment for me and I thank you for that. I am glad that you have come around to performing your father's music. His spirit is so alive in you, his precious son. May the memory of your dad and your beautiful wife, Marlo, forever be a blessing.
When I was 10/11 years old I learned to play many of Jim Croce's songs on my folk guitar. I still play my guitar and his songs -- by memory 50 years later. Thankful for Jim Croce's beautiful and heartfelt music.
I graduated HS in 1974 so Jim Croce and his music was a big part of my life then....and for the decades that followed. So thrilled to hear AJ playing his father's music.
Wow, this is just beautiful. I was a huge fan of Jim Croce and this is sad what has happened to his son. However it's great to see him weather the storm and rise up in victory over all the tragedy in his life. God bless him.
Wow. Jim’s death was devastating to his fans. His son’s voice is beautiful, too. Love to think his legacy is being kept alive. Every song was a hit and still is. Never forget. ❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I love Jim’s music from the beginning!!! A large repertoire of fantastic songs in such a short period of time! Not only saddened that WE lost him so soon , but also the loss of the many more outstanding songs WE will never hear!! After all is said and done, WE do have “ Time In A Bottle “ of what he did give us !! Thanks Jim and Maury !! Thanks AJ !
I’m a huge Jim Croce fan, was devastated by his passing. His music was and is INCREDIBLE. I’ve always known about A.J. But never knew about the childhood he endured and the blindness. That’s horrible. I’m so happy you’ve come to a place where we can enjoy you performing your dad’s music. You’re awesome. He is very proud of you. Keep on truckin A.J.
OT The guy looks amazing at 50 - what style, the whole outfit, the hair, the sunglasses. I wish him all the very best. 🙏 I love his father's music so, so much.
Never knew that AJ went through all that.....how sad. Glad he has found a way to coexist with his father's fame while putting his own stamp on the music world. Loved Jim Croce's music and was so sad when he passed...he was gone too soon.
if Croce was my dad I wouldnt go into music at all. genius is not hereditary. Look at the Beatle kids. impossible act to follow, so I wouldnt follow it.
In my humble opinion, l don't believe that A.J. ever tried to follow his fathers act. Nor did he try to ride his coat tails into fame. l believe he chose music to soothe his pain, whether he ever made it to the big stage or not. It appears to have worked quite well for him because this interview shows a gentle, humble and well adjusted man who has overcome, and is at peace with the torments he's endured, ones that could have easily driven him down even more.
@@nancydemoss2945 Lennon would be an impossible act to follow .... and the expectations would be sky high..... cant fill dem shoes. I would go into real estate.
I was a big Jim Croce fan when he died and I knew some about his family, but I had no idea what AJ went through. So glad he is embracing his father's music now. I wish him the best and still miss JC.
I loooove Jim Croce. I’m 54 so I was just a little girl when Jim Croce died. I shared a room with my sister who was 10 years older than me and she played Jim Croce all the time. That’s how I fell for his music. I wish I could see the positive in something so tragic. Good for him. My fav song It doesn’t have to be that way. So hard to pick a favorite song 💜
Jim Croce has been a little forgotten over the years. He was an all time Great. Can't imagine all the great songs He would have written if He wasn't taken so young.
From time to time; the good Lord places a beautiful soul on this Earth, and although that time will be short, the amazing musical legacy that Jim Croce has left behind will endure forever. His son is now tasked with helping to keep the memories, emotions and music alive for generations.
Such a beautiful story, thank you CBS Sunday Morning. My family and I lost our old hero brother a month and 3 days later 10/14/1973 RIP Andrew Elliot Dauer. May God richly bless everyone.
