Glad you found it helpful! :) 4 minutes is definitely on the long side. If you're doing a Father Daughter and you're not learning many steps, keep it down to 2 min max. If you learn a few dance skills, then you could maybe go closer to 2.5/3.

We find ourselves tearing up just listening to these songs and having the thought of our daughters dancing at their weddings. Our advice? Let the water works flow!!! Our daughter wants to dance half of her chosen song with her dad and the second half with me, her mom. What would be a smooth and graceful way for us to do that transition? We'll be dancing to Father and Daughter by Paul Simon, and although it specifically mentions the word father, the lyrics express sentiments that apply equally to both of us, her mother and her father. Your videos has been extremely helpful for learning simple moves as well as learning about communication/connection between dance partners. Thank you!

For a smooth and graceful transition, you could either go and tap her dad on the shoulder and ask to cut in, or you could have her dad end the dance with a hug and kiss and walk her over to you. If you don't feel comfortable tapping him on the shoulder to cut in all by yourself, you could have an escort take you to the floor and do it with you (if you think you might be too nervous or bawling too much 😭). Honesty is the best policy. Let your step dad know how you feel, and what you're concerned about. If it's on a personal level, then have that difficult conversation and see what the best solution is for you. If your nerves are purely based on dancing technical concerns then find trusted professionals to help you and your step dad dance together confidently. Although there are many father-daughter dances on RU-vid that are super crazy, please understand that this is not the norm, nor should it be expected of you. Having a natural, and confident dance is definitely possible with the right strategy and lessons. When all goes right, you'll actually be looking forward to dancing at your wedding! I've chosen a non-standard song to dance with my dad at my wedding in 3 weeks and we're both a little worried about pulling it off. The sheet music says it's a 4/4 beat and neither one of us are "dancers". The song is called "Not All Heroes Wear Capes" (acoustic version) by Owl City. Please help! Is this even a danceable song?

Hi Rebecca, great to connect. We feel your anxiety about the dance and the song, and please understand this is a very normal feeling for non-dancers at such an important day of their lives. The song selection is awesome. Live the sentiment and lyrics. Yes, the song is 4/4. Instead of trying to formalize the musicality, follow our instruction of "Boom-Chic". It's how we get total beginners to dance to basically any song out there. Use the slapping of the strings as the "chic" as a clear cue to listen for.
