Out of all the channels I don’t think anyone has dived into the lyrics as hard as you two and I’m all here for it. Pretty sure this whole album is about how this is a toxic relationship but he can’t stop wanting more. The album name ‘sundowning’ makes me think how even how bad the night may have been with this someone, in the morning you forget about it all and you just remember how good things were.
We really appreciate that and I am really happy the vision for this channel is evident. And that sundowning piece really sounds like a nightmare... Sad thing is there's people living this way and are aware of it... They still wake up every morn and choose to forget it.
Sundowning is also a term for alzheimers where as soon as the sun starts to go down they forget more and more and get disoriented. It's a terrible thing to lose pieces of yourself in the dark.
''I am the shadow and your the passenger'' is a Jungian bar right there. Carl Jung was a Swiss Psychiatrist that revolutionized psychology the world over. Many of the ways we look at reason and logic come strait from Jung. Analytical thinking is Jung's bread and butter. One of his teaching is that we all have a shadow that is all of the darkness within us. Its only after we realize that that darkness is a part of us and pass through our shadow and integrate it in to our identity can we pass throw it and find our true selves. Jung believed that for individuation to occur, the personal unconscious and the conscious ego have to be fully integrated. The truth about Vessel is that he is not singing about a girl. Jung's four major archetypes are: the persona, the shadow, the anima/animus, and the self. He is singing about the masculine and feminine personas with in us all. The Anima is the feminine part of a man's psyche and the Animus is the masculine. Those have to become one to transcend. He is singing about his Anima that he can't seem to reach.
When you first read Vessel's lyrics you think they are deep. That is until you see those lyrics through the lense of Carl Jung and then start to see that it so much deeper. Then you dive down the rabbit hole of the artwork and find that on their second album, This Place Will Become Your Tomb, all the art is ocean depths and sea creatures that live in that depth. Each song on the album is decending in depth ever deeper until you hit the deepest recorded depth in the ocean. This band is on another level gentlemen.
Bro I love Carl Jungs work! I dive into it as much as I probably should but I love his work. I heard about his work through research on shadow work! Its great!!

My favorite line of this song is the enemies line. In context of the "story", I think that Vessel is willing to defend Sleep to the ends of the earth even though she won't acknowledge him or give him what he wants (a relationship). Tearing the fiber from the filament and being the limit of the light could mean that he wants to show her the darkness that she could cause if she goes to far from him. Like stay perfect with me and don't give yourself to everyone else without giving me my taste as well.
I love how you guys bounce off each other with these reviews. I like to think of this song about the battle between him and "sleep". First verse is vessles perspective second is sleeps perspective and the toxicity of their relationship.
“You take the dark and carve me out a home” she was the dark and he went to the dark to be with her. Notice he said he will be the limit of her light again, he wants to take her out of the darkness, slowly so she can handle it unlike before. The intake of breath so sharp I take to mean that first breath after being resuscitated. I think her enemies are the drugs and alcohol which are also affect her darkest impulses. No one fights fair when they are trying to save what they love. Just give in like before and let me help you and then you can help me. I could be way off but that’s my interpretation 😊
It seems to me that her enemies are the dark sides of her character, like manipulation, cruelty, and so on. He's trying to save her from that, trying to change her. That's why he says that he will be with her in this darkness, and he will try to pull her out of it.
Also this song links linearly with are you really okay? being the 7th song on each album. The beginning of Give says you take the dark and carve me out a home and the opening line of Are You Really Okay? says I raised you in dark. Give could be Vessels song and Are You Really Okay? could be sleep responding. Love these deep dives!!

Filament also means a conducting wire or thread with a high melting point, forming part of an electric bulb or thermionic valve and heated or made incandescent by an electric current. I see this as such a love song haha I feel like it is like him longing for her once again the toxic relationship keeping them apart. They still have some contact I think or maybe just in his dreams. I think this is specifically about him wanting her to give into him, wanting her to give into her impulse to need to be loved by him because he feels like they are just meant to be together and also its kinda baby making music too lol
No edit necessary, Imo. I Love the unedited reactions, mess ups, flubs, hick ups and all. This way we see what I call, "The Process", of what the song is telling the listener. Which is different for everyone. Some think this is Vessel singing to Sleep and others think it's Sleep singing to Vessel. I think it's both, as in a conversation between the two of them. It's a Love/Hate thing for both of them. Great video guys. I Love how you two talk through the lyrics until they make sense to you. Intelligent listening is rare to see and I'm loving it. Honestly, the balance between this song and the next on the record and the insane flip in perspective and tone that is "Give" / "Gods" is my favorite part of Sundowning. I think "Give" is from The Goddess (Sleep) perspective, and "Gods" is from Vessel's perspective. It makes the "I'll be watching for your enemies" line make a bit more sense IMO. Can't WAIT to watch you guys react to "Gods"!!!
I’ll be honest: I always imagine this song being sung from the woman’s perspective, or “Sleep,” as it were. Pulling him back into his dark temptations etc.
In this song I feel like it’s the snake in the garden trying to whisper temptations. But also doing it out of some sick shape of love. He wants to capture for his own to possess. He hates this about himself. He wishes he could proper but is twisted

I think it is more of he knows it is toxic but he also can't help he still loves her and craves that connection with her that he once had in hopes it will change to be better again. He saying I want to know it all, even your dark impulses, he wants to know her better and deeper, he doesn't care, he just wants to be with her and is asking her to give in again in the moment. I think he wants to be with her no matter what even if for just a moment. He is saying he will do anything to be with her and fight for her even if for just a moment. I think he is saying when she is awake, he won't fight fair to get what he wants and he will be there. I'm guessing too. Lol. So many different ways to interpret. I think ultimately he is saying I will be there even in your dark moments, the more she reveals, the more he knows and is ok with hence he wants to taste her better. I think the open warfare is their relationship/dynamics. I'm trying to figure it out too.

I feel like the perspective of this song is coming from depression. As if its a living being. How it loves to take over no matter how hard you fight it. Just my opinion.
@@UncleTrebor As an example, the first line of the song is "you take the dark and carve me out a home" which I have taken as 'you experienced a trauma and allowed me to take root'. Throughout the whole song, (if you take it as depression's point of view) the lyrics make more sense. Now, I'm not saying that my opinion IS the right answer. Vessel obviously wants everyone to have their own interpretation. This is just what makes sense to me being that I battle depression every day.
This is another one from Sleep's POV for me - the references back to Higher are too strong. I think Vessel tried to resist a bit (end of Take Aim - I will run like the wind til you follow me again) and Sleep is trying to pull him back in by being tender and sweet with this song. "If you want to give me anything" could also refer to Vessel and his offerings, and Sleep wanting him to give in and offer himself up again. Sleep is pulling Vessel back into the darkness. Also, a point about Higher and the "I am a fire, and you are dry as bone" line and it's relationship to Take Me Back To Eden, and why I think Higher is from Sleep's POV. Vessel says in TMBTE, "my my those eyes like fire... You're a funeral pyre" - so who is the fire killing him slow in Higher? Sleep. Okay I'm done I swear 😂
