BabyLegs is a build-it-yourself research net (trawl) for monitoring plastic pollution in surface water. The invention was created by Dr. Max Liboiron, Director of Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research (CLEAR) at Memorial University, who is turning the trawl into an accessible kit with an online community forum in partnership with Public Lab for Open Technology.
The Fathom Fund, from the Marine Environmental Marine Observation Prediction and Response Network (MEOPAR), is a crowdfunding program supporting innovative marine research that will directly impact Canadians. Researchers who raise 25% of their project costs through crowdfunding are eligible to receive up to 75% of the remaining project costs from the Fund.
To date, Fathom Projects have included developing green plastic solutions using invasive species, a program to inspire BIPOC folks to pursue studies in STEM fields, a coastal pollution mapper, and more.
