Fatwood Firestarter How to find Fatwood & how to start a fire with it.
Hello
I'm Paul. Thank you for visiting my channel.
in today's video I go in search of fatwood firestarter. Fatwood is found in pine trees and it's basically wood with a very high content of flammable resin. It's an excellent tinder for starting a fire and it will take a spark easily from a ferro rod. I show you how to find fatwood, how to process it and how to start a fire. I always carry a piece of fatwood in my pack. It almost guarantees a campfire for me when I'm out in the woods. Perfect for bushcraft and survival situations.
Thanks for watching.

When I was in the UK I tried to find fatwood by following the advise of looking for dead stumps but never found any. I watched this last night then went out today and found some straight away! Thanks a million mate

good to know... Thanks, I live in the US in Texas, and my dad used to bring what he called "rich pine". We used it regularly for fire starter kindling. It's the BEST thing in the world to start a fire, but I never was with him when he brought it in. NOW I know how to find it, thanks so much.

Awesome video. Can I add a tip? Never scrape with your cutting edge. Use the backside of your saw, the 90 degree spine works fantastic and your cutting edge remains sharp!!

Hes leaving out a key element though. The limbs will generally have a higher (it's a certainty) sap content if they were damaged in the past. Which is why he was targeting not just dead, but damaged limbs.

that pine stump you are starting that fire on would be a grate place to harvest a large amount of fatwood from. find a winter fall time then in the spring the pitch will be pushed out of the roots and turn that whole stump into fatwood. and if you carve a cup in the middle you will have pine pitch resin that is a amazing fire starter by itself

Thank you Paul for your very informative video. I'm new to fire starting with fire steel or ferro. I hear people talking a lot about Fatwood. I've even seen people making it with melting wax. No one ever told me it was simply dead pine limbs. I live in North Carolina and we are eat slam up with pine trees. They are in every wooded section that you may go into. Never knew it was natural wood. I'd never heard the term before . Thanks so much for enlightening me.

Here in Louisiana the long leaf pine species , aka rich lighter pine , fat pine ,,,has very long pine needles. Huge , 1000 plus year old slow growth trees were mostly all cut down in the 1920s for turpentine.. many stumps still exist.. so we just check the needle length if you're inspecting a live tree. But please don't fell them.

Paul, thanks for your uploads mate, I have just found your channel and really appreciate the quality of your videos. I am used to camping and backpacking but just taken a real interest in learning the more useful bushcraft skills, such as fire lighting. This was a great demo, I am guessing that fatwood is easy to light even if wet? It looked quite damp in your video, or the stump that you lit it on did. Just curious, is there any risk of the tree catching disease due to the open cut off point?
@PaulMessner
@PaulMessner 5 лет назад
No risk Gareth. I take dead limbs and the pine heals the cut with sap. These kind of trees benefit from a prune of lower limbs. Most forestry commissions do this to help the tree grow straight up. Thanks for watching. Best wishes, Paul
