In February when Fauci said facemasks weren't necessary, my spouse (a layperson) and I (a health professional) practically had our eyes roll back in our heads because we couldn't believe he would downplay the importance of protection for a virus we knew nothing about as in "NOVEL." First, IF the case was he didn't want the public buying up face masks so that medical personnel wouldn't run out, think how that makes any sense. As an 'expert' Fauci could have stated that and suggest instead a microweaved or other tightly woven material to use over your nose and mouth. Second, Fauci should have never downplayed the transmissibility of it. He said that the chances of catching it were very "minuscule." Right that's what PREVENTION is all about. So according to him, we wait until it is full blown? Third, it is a "NOVEL" virus. Since we knew nothing about it, why take chances? Even if a virus particle is half a micron, why not create some type of obstacle to that particle? Anything would have been better than nothing to have dampened it's spread in February. Fourth, at the same time Fauci makes fun of a person asking about flying, This was not time to make light of a situation or use anyone as the brunt of a joke who is asking, Fauci (an 'expert?') and trying to be cautious.

I have been wearing a mask (and limiting my trips) since March when this whole thing went down. I’m not sure how being considerate to others for the common good is now being mocked by some who are calling it “living in fear”, but it needs to stop.... When I wear a mask over my nose and mouth in public, I want you to know the following: 📷 I'm educated enough to know that I could be asymptomatic and still give you the virus. 📷 No, I don't "live in fear" of the virus; I just want to be part of the solution, not the problem. 📷 I don't feel like the "government controls me". A lesson on science (by Francis Bacon ): As a science tutor, this is what "science" means, what I tell my students: SCIENCE is the formal understanding of _nature_ (of things and processes). Anti-science stance is just a proclamation that ignorance trumps knowledge. Scientists are people, who can err, but the body of science won't permit invalid hypothesis to lead. Good science is data and experimental verification to accepted standards (called peer review) So when Fauci says wear a mask, that's not just an opinion, its based on best available data and studies. If its wrong advice he will be the first to admit he was wrong, that's because he is a very good scientist.

@John Shen Fauci himself explained in this very video regarding why he said what he did about masks and why he's changed his stance & messaging. Either you didn't watch, didn't pay attention, or want to continue to spread misinformation and use his original mistakes to promote a narrative. He quickly reversed course early on and promoted mask wearing along with social distancing and good hygiene. Those that continued to promote the opposite for their agenda, such as the US Surgeon General, the President, Republican governors, senators, and other leaders are the ones to place blame on, as they STILL aren't doing the right thing, and instead of acknowledging that not only Fauci, but entire countries, bodies of scientists, doctors, etc did not have enough knowledge or information about this virus early on and because of that mistakes were made. Perhaps I feel the way I do because, it is how my family and I have experienced the "systems" in this country. @Stephan Sikstrom Well, what I can give you now is common since logic and reason and I would encourage you to do the work because the research is definitely out there. My common since tell me if masks did nothing to prevent germs, bacteria, and viruses then our surgeons would not need to mask up before operating on us. There are many situations where masks reduce the risk of inhaling toxins as well but I will not list all of them here. While I do not believe masks eliminate that risk completely, I strongly believe they reduce the risk. That said we take a risk everytime we walk out the front door, drive a car...there is always gonna be risk. However, when we leave the house/sleep we lock our doors (someone could come in another way), when we get into a vehicle we put on a seat belt to reduce risk, we obey speed limits, traffic, signals and signs to reduce risk...not to eliminate it. I simply am also armed with some education on the matter that supports these common since, dare I say common courtesy reasons to wear a mask. When mask requirements were implemented it was incredibly hard for me to wear one with out having a panic attack due to trauma endured where my mouth and nose were covered...on several occasions I might add...but, I have worked through it for the most part. Now it only happens if I experience a stressful situation while wearing a mask...which did result in me leaving a check out line and a full cart to run outside distance myself while I gathered myself.

I just want to make an important statement that many of you might not realize: There is a reason why Dr. Fauci is considered a leading expert in his field. He attended Cornell Medical College & graduated 1ST in his class to get an MD. (after 4 years to get a Bachelor's) and then he did his residency in infectious diseases (minimum 3 years). This was just schooling....so he spent over a decade just to get himself into the field. He has worked at the NIH since 1968 and and has been at the forefront of U.S. efforts to contend with viral diseases like HIV/AIDS, SARS, the 2009 swine flu pandemic, MERS, Ebola (and COVID19). Not to mention the fact that he has 30 honorary doctorates.

@@Tj-mb7ch I checked with my friends who are doctors and they told that to calculate the mortality rate, you need to use the number of deaths divided by the number of people that contracted the illness. The reason is because doctors and scientists will try their best to stop the spread of the virus. So if you just take the total population, then you will not see how severe the virus is in terms of out of the population that contracted the virus.
