FAULTY DCC DECODER - how do you know?
Have you ever had a locomotive simply not working, you checked everything: cleaned wheels, cleaned pickups, adjusted the pickups, sticking or binding mechanism but nothing works. Well it COULD be the decoder. This video explores a DCC tester unit by ESU.
In this video I:
- I give a guided tour of the unit.
- Explain how I use a plug and play system for simple and quick connection of a controller to a layout or other end user ‘device’.
- Show how the unit connects to a dcc controller.
- Test a few dcc decoders of varying types.
- Final thoughts.

FYI, 100 ohms speakers were used by ESU Loksound version 3 and 3.5 decoders. They changed to 8 ohm on Version 4 onwards.

Hi John very interesting indeed, I found a faulty decoder in my Bachmann class 47 which I fitted with a basic Bachmann decoder Back in 2011 . When I removed it and replaced it with the blanking plug it run absolutely fine . I did notice very small pin head burn hole on the circuit board but I was running it on DC for quite a while waiting for my new DCC controller to arrive. Many thanks

Hi Brian, its always a pain when a decoders packs up, but it sounds like the loco is good, if it runs on DC. Let’s hope the new DCC controller makes a difference to the play value.

Seems to be a quite useful gadget, I may get one in the future when my layout is up and running, I'm still in the planning stages and keep picking up hints and tips, so thanks for the info.

Hi John, Long time no see but been busy on my layout, I quite agree with decoders I got a few Lais NEM652 and one just failed on me on a Fowler F4 I converted, I have DCC++EX setup in my shed with a Tablet and I also have another setup that has a Lais Decoder Tester, looks the same as yours, But after putting this decoder on the test bed it got hot and was shorting, so wont be buying any more pity as being on DWP i'm on a budget, I have another in a Class 55 Plus an A4 Mallard which I converted, I also have a City of Sheffield which has a TTS chip which works well and a Class101 with a chip in not sure what it is ... But quite a few other DC loco's I got over last few years inc 2 Bachman Jubilee Split chassic should be fun converting ... Regards John

Hi John good to hear from you. Decoders can be a mine field, I tend to stick with Zimo, ESU or bachman ( which are usually one of the other two). I honestly think with those you get what you pay for. Ive had four TTS 3 failed last in my 50. Time will tell. Wont get any more. I’d rather wait till I can buy a zimo one. Thanks for taking the time to get in touch.

To be clear, these test bench solutions are protocol and system independent. They work with any protocol be it DCC, MFX, Selectrix, etc as the boards don’t use anything dependent on the protocols. 2 signal/power wires from the command station in and various slots to connect the decoders to. All the board is, is the set of consumers that represent the loco and those are the same over all digital protocol solutions. The test bench just routes the electrical signals from every one of the connectors for the various Interfaces to those consumers (motor, LEDs , speaker).

Hi John, first time I have seen on of those, very handy device. Will be interesting to see when you hook it up to a computer and JMRI. I've had a bit of a play with the JMRI software (I'm using it with a system called DCC++ running on an Arduino) and yes there's lots you can do with it. Cheers John

That was very timely John. I have been wondering whether to get one of these. It does seem the best use is when it can be connected to a computer. I suspect you can do more diagnostic work. I think I will hold off for the time being, but I will be interested to see what you make of it once you can fit the sprog to it. Stephen

Brilliant Stephen, great minds and all that. Ive actually got the sprog for YOUCHOOS new program tweak and drive, so itll be interesting to see where this goes. Be 2-3 weeks now as Ive got to do something to the layout and someone asked for breakdown of farish 47. We’ll see lol

It is definitely worth the investment getting a decoder tester, My esu one is from 2007 but definitely needs updating LOL! I use the Digitrax pr3 to connect it up to a laptop, JMRI definitely gives you more options and diagnostics so Once John gets his head around it all I'm sure we will see a few videos on it :-) All the best Tony

Hello John It would have been nice to see if the lights worked on the 6 pin Bachmann before you tried to re-program it, if they had worked you could use them in unpowered trailer cars on dmus where motor use is not required saving the cost of another decoder.
@piccadillymodelrailways
@piccadillymodelrailways 4 года назад
Hi Brian, sadly not, the decoder has somehow shorted inside. Must have overheated somewhere and components were causing some melting. The tester only confirmed the chip to be dead. Most of these old chips ate now useless, but as you said I did put odd 1/2 in for light duties lol

Nice video John! I have used a decoder tester for quite a while and wouldn't be without it but mine does need upgrading as mine was made in 2007 and as you say more N-gauge is starting to go towards the next18 decoders, I also think the susi connection could be useful as some sound chips have susi connections so you can piggy back them on to a decoder which has susi, most Zimo chips do but you do need to solder onto the chip, not for the faint hearted LOL! Jmri opens up a new avenue for decoders so again very useful, I have used a Digitrax pr3 to connect up to the laptop but sprog is just as good, I will look forward to watching your progress. All the best Tony
@piccadillymodelrailways
@piccadillymodelrailways 4 года назад
Thanks Tony, Yes I think it will be a useful buy. Im not familiar with the Susi connection. I mainly have zimo sound chips with everything soldered on, I just have to fit it. What is the susi for?
@TheHeritageLine
@TheHeritageLine 4 года назад
@@piccadillymodelrailways As far as I know Susi lets you piggyback more decoders I think up to 3 or 4 onto your original loco decoder so you could have on a chip with sound, you could add another chip with more light functions or a chip which could use a smoke generator and I think one controls solenoids. It's more for the purists which want every conceivable thing on a model. but to be honest Zimo decoders normally cover most of it on one chip.

Hi john, Greatly informative video, can you program the decoders as well as reset them on it? And if you could please do a separate video for the sprig and jmri setup would be good. Kind regards Alex
@piccadillymodelrailways
@piccadillymodelrailways 4 года назад
Hi Alex, as I can tell the device acts like a loco except with so many more decoder types, so you could use it to test program. All of that is done on your controller, whatever you can do on that is the same with this. I’ll do a video in few weeks when I get my head round it, but this video was not popular. So it maybe a brief outline don’t know yet.

Hi, it was around £40 give or take, sadly I don’t have all the answers but can’t see why not. After all the varying controllers just give out voltage.

Hi, without seeing its hard to say. It could be they runaway to calibrate the motor, then all is good. Alternatively change CV 5 to say 170, might help

How can I change the cv the trains have not been programed yet on hm7000
@piccadillymodelrailways
@piccadillymodelrailways Год назад
Ok, that will be a really complex answer. The chip can be programmed on the hornby app or if it’s in DCC mode most DCC controllers allow you to change CVs. May I suggest you search RU-vid for your controller and how to change CVs. Sorry it’s very brief, but things vary depending on your setup and I’m not familiar with every controller. Alternatively try taking it to your local model shop, they may be able to help, but might charge for the privilege. Thx
