It's less that it's a mess and more that English tends to retain pronunciation via etymology a tad more than some other languages that have less loanwords. So for example "cute" comes from "acute", which comes from Latin "acutus" - it has the cyute pronunciation. "Current" is from Old French "corant" via Latin "courre" - i.e. the non-IRyS "current" pronunciation without a kyu sound. English is a Germanic language but tends sometimes retain things like spellings and pronunciations from Greek and Latin roots, which is also why you see the British/American divide on the -ize/-ise suffix, where American English retains the root spelling and the Brits don't.

@@Darth_Conans English IS a mess because the vowels are overloaded - each vowel has two different pronunciations. That's insane orthography. The sane method would be to use something like umlats for all long vowels.
