[Announcement] Free Polymer Clay Mini-Course
11 Ways to Make and Use Molds with Polymer Clay
Click to enroll: learnpolymerclay.teachable.co...
Hello dear polymer clay enthusiast!
If you know me, I'm a big advocate of working with molds. I really consider molds as a great starting point for the creative process.
You might have mixed feeling about molds thinking that they might make you less creative or incite you to copy or anything. I want to assure you that molds are, as I said, a starting point. You can absolutely tweak the molded designs to make them look as you want them to look. So no copying there.
I personally love using molds with polymer clay and making molds for polymer clay because they allow you to make elaborate designs even if you don't have clay sculpting skills or you're in the process of improving them - consider using molds just as training wheels when you're learning to ride a bike.
This mini-course will focus mainly on how to make molds using polymer clay and on how to use silicone molds with polymer clay. It will be packed with actionable and easy to implement techniques that you can apply right away in your work. I think there's going to be some ideas that will totally surprise you:)
Enroll now while it's available and free!
Hope to see you in the class!
Happy claying!
Mihaela
P.S. Please let me know what ideas you particularly liked! I'm always happy to receive feedback.
Back to the tutorial:)
Hello dear polymer clay enthusiasts!
As you can see, I'm still immersed in the faux techniques and this time I decided to go for the faux fused glass idea.
I'm using nail art foils and Weldbond adhesive to achieve the vivid colors of fused glass. I can tell you that I'm fascinated with these foils - there are so many colors, effects and holographic effects available that this will certainly open up endless possibilities for you to decorate your polymer clay pieces.
This is not my first attempt to put together nail art foils and polymer clay. The first time I tried to press them into the clay and then bake the clay (as I would do when using metallic foils and polymer clay), but this did not work (for me). I didn't want to give up on them, so I tried baking the polymer clay and transfer the holographic / metallic pattern using E6000 glue. Again it didn't work. And finally I decided to give it another try and I used Weldbond and it worked. I can't tell you how happy I was...
I used Jacquard Neopaque black acrylic paint to enhance the faux glass look and I used a generous layer of Triple Thick Gloss Glaze to have a glass like finish on the pieces. For the trial pieces I added a second thin layer on top of the first layer and they look wonderfully).
As a piece of advice: try to clean the Weldbond from the recessed areas. If you notice that you have whitesh areas underneath the Triple Thick Gloss Glaze, don't worry though- they will disappear in 12 -36 hours.
I hope you'll enjoy watching this tutorial and I hope that you'll take this inspiration and use it in your work with polymer clay.
My best to you!
Mihaela

Thank you for this great tutorial. I'm looking forward to trying this. I really like the idea of having the clasp at the front. Our family went out for my Mom's birthday and I gave her a necklace with magnetic closure which she was pleased with. My young niece was and daughter 30 year old both said they struggled with some of the clasps. I think if we're selling our work it's something to be aware of for all ages. Blessings to you and your family

Thank you, Val, for your wonderful message! I'm very happy that you'll try this inspiration and use it in your work. There are a lot of beautiful clasps out there and it's a pity to hide them (they won't be too visible if you put them in the back). Magnetic claps are wonderful as well. I think it's better to use them in the front as well (because they won't have to stand all the weight of the necklace). I tried to use such clasps and put them in the back and they tend to open up (if the necklace is a little bit too heavy). But now I'd put them in the front as well. I'm sending you blessings and my best thoughts as well!

I do both polymer clay and nail art. There is a glue for foils in nail art that dries tacky. This will then adhere the foils to your nails. I would think it would work the same on baked clay. If the glue is wet you don't get good coverage. There is also a glue called "Best little craft glue" that will also dry tacky. I think the tackiness is the answer for best adhesion of the foil.

This is fabulous! You know, I always make the front first, then I just use liquid polymer clay to attach the back and the bails, that is when I smooth the edges properly too. It's less bother to take care of both the front and the back at the same time when you work. But the effect is fabulous. I normally don't like foils, I think they give a plasticky look to polymer clay (the thing I always try to avoid) but in this technique you really made them look awesome!
@MakeClayArtJewelrywithme
@MakeClayArtJewelrywithme 7 лет назад
Thank you, Kalyana! I like to simplify things (when this is possible) and I try to bake the pieces only one time (when the project allows it, of course). I'm not very patient (which is not a good thing), so I tried to speed up the process. I made a habit to texture the back first because in the beginning I would get so carried away with the making of the front that I would forget about the back. And there are some surface treatment agents (like Pebeo paints) that are not standing very well the heat, so after applying the paint (in some cases), you cannot put the pieces in the oven to bake the textured back. Even though I try to limit my use of sparkle and glitter ( I am a big fan of both), I love foils and mica and metallic paints. Thank you again, Kalyana, for your wonderful message! I love your tutorials and I think you do a great and inspiring work! Have a beautiful and blessed day!

Thank you, Rose! You can ask me anything if you need help:) Try to clean the Weldbond adhesive in the recessed areas. If you notice whitesh areas inside the Triple Thick, don't worry, they will disappear in about 12-36 hours. If you use your hands to apply Weldbond adhesive, protect them with gloves (which I should have done also, but I got carried away). I've got different results when applying more or less pressure on the stamp - so you might want to try to see which result you prefer the most. I had good results with most of the nail art foils, but sometimes you have to insist a little bit or wait just a little for the glue to become sticky. Wishing you lots of inspiration and I hope you'll have great results with this technique! Have a wonderful day!

The best part of working with polymer clay is the fact that it makes you stretch and grow because there are endless possibilities, happy accidents and it is in the same time an inner self-discovery journey! It's not going to be easy (and like any other practice, the more you do it , the better you become at doing it ), but it's totally worth it. I am very happy for you! If I can be of any help, don't hesitate to ask me questions! Have a wonderful and inspired day!

Thank you for the very detailed and informative video. What type of welbond are you using and what brand of the triple gloss? In the past I have had many problems with glazes being stick currently I am using Premo clay what are your recommendations?
@MakeClayArtJewelrywithme
@MakeClayArtJewelrywithme 7 лет назад
Thank you, Ramona, for appreciating my tutorial! I'm using Weldbond 60ml Universal Adhesive and it worked well for several projects. I used it also to glue rhinestones to polymer clay (rhinestones that I previously pressed into the clay and that I removed before baking). I'm using Americana Triple Thick Gloss Glaze in some tutorials and Deco Art Triple Thick Gloss Glaze and they look the same to me. I use this glaze a lot in my work and I'm happy with the results. I take the time to eliminate air bubbles (if necessary) by dragging them to the sides with a toothpick. You have to test it to see how much is too much. I apply generous amounts on some pieces, while for others I prefer to apply a thin coat and apply later a second or even a third coat. I have to tell you that I work with Cernit and Fimo (and these are the brands that I can easily find here) and that I am less familiar with Premo and Kato. I think you can buy a small bottle (they sell it in larger or smaller containers) of Triple Thick Gloss Glaze and try it to see how you like it. It you're used to working with resin, I think resin is the best (I used resin when I started out working with polymer clay and then I read about all the possible setbacks of resin and now I let it sit on my shelf - also because I am impatient and I want my pieces to cure faster - but I hope that I'll have the courage to use resin again). For the moment I prefer working with Triple Thick Gloss Glaze because it's easy to use and it cures faster. I hope this message answers your questions. Have a wonderful and inspired day!

Thank you for the video. My general question is the following: when do you bake the clay? With the foil or before the foil? Thnaks very much
@MakeClayArtJewelrywithme
@MakeClayArtJewelrywithme 6 лет назад
Thank you very much for your comment. It depends a lot on the foils that you are using. If you are using Mylar foils , gilding foils, Fimo foils or Lisa Pavelka foils, you can put them on top of the clay before baking the clay. For the nail art foils that I'm using in this tutorial, I recommend gluing them after baking the polymer clay pieces. I like nail art foils because they are not expensive and you have so many colors and patterns to choose from. I also use varnish to protect the foil decorated pieces during wearing. Have a wonderful and inspired day!

I don't know what nail foils are like, but may be they have a plastic coating like the Lisa Pavelka foils for polymer clay (the foils you are using have a different colour on the backside of the foil exactly as Pavelka's do) which is removed by burnishing the foil on to unbaked clay and quickly ripping the plastic layer from the foil, (like you would with an Elastoplast) thereby leaving the foil layer only on top of the clay. So I think they would work without glueing if you were to burnish the foil on to the unbaked clay.
@MakeClayArtJewelrywithme
@MakeClayArtJewelrywithme 7 лет назад
I know the Lisa Pavelka foils and they are wonderful. I'm using similar foils (nail art transfer foils) and it's the same idea, you transfer the metallic holographic pattern onto a surface. You can transfer them onto raw polymer clay (by burnishing the foil and lifting off the plastic foil), the problem was the fact that when I baked the pieces, the metallic effect disappeared (more or less according to the color - the blue did not make it, but the yellow, yes). So for more consistent results, I tried baking the pieces and transfer the holographic design afterwards (by glueing it - and this is how these foils are used - the pattern is glued onto the nail using a special nail adhesive). The Lisa Pavelka foils and the Mylar foils are wonderful, but I consider that this technique is useful because when working with nail art foils, you have a very extended palette of colors, metallic and holographic effects. And a second advantage (in my opinion) is that you have a better control of the areas that you are decorating. The holographic design will stick only onto the areas where there is Weldbond adhesive, not to the entire sheet of polymer clay. Have a wonderful day!

Have you tried the UV resin from Aliexpress, Mihaela? It cures under a lamp but even here in the UK it will cure outside! UV top coat nail gel is good too - and has its own brush. A very pretty result - thank you!

Thank you, Carrie, for your beautiful comment and for your recommendation. I've worked with Envirotex Jewelry Resin and Cleopatra Resin (a French brand). I love resin for its beautiful effect and for the durability of the pieces, yet sometimes I want to speed up the process and in such cases I prefer using products with a similar glass-like finish and quicker to cure/drying time. Thank you for your recommendation. I'll keep it in mind for the future! Have a beautiful and creative day!

Nice work. Shouldn't you wait until the glue partially dries before putting the foil on?
@MakeClayArtJewelrywithme
@MakeClayArtJewelrywithme 5 месяцев назад
Thank you for your beautiful message! 😊 You can wait for 30 seconds and then start applying the foils. I found that with Weldbond adhesive, you don't have to wait much before applying the foils. I also used Superglue for other projects and it worked fine as well (but the smell is very strong and it tends to glue the fingers as well:) Have a beautiful day/evening!

Good evening Terezia! Thank you for appreciating the video! I'd rather suggest SuperGlue or any other glue that works with baked polymer clay. I tried to use nail art foils on raw polymer clay and bake the clay afterwards, but my results were not great. I do use SuperGlue sometimes to glue nail art foils and it works just as fine (I suggest using gloves to avoid having sticky fingers and also working in well ventilated areas is recommended). I hope this answers your question. Thank you for writing me! Have a beautiful evening and happy claying!

Thank you. I used Triple Thick Gloss Glaze. It works well for me but you should test it to see if it works in the weather conditions where you live. Anyway if you're used to using resin, resin is always a good choice for this kind of effect (a glass look). P.S. I'm using Google translate to reply to your comment and I hope you'll understand my reply. I'm Romanian and I only speak Romanian, French, English, Spanish and a little bit Italian. Este usor de folosit (trebuie "pregatita" un pic inainte de folosire (se gasesc filmulete in engleza pe net despre "how to condition the polymer clay - with the roller or with a pasta machine"). Se gasesc multe culori (care se pot amesteca intre ele si astfel se obtin si mai multe nuante), argila polimerica cu efecte metalice, perlate, translucide. Iti urez succes si daca te mai pot ajuta, nu ezita sa ma intrebi! Numai bine!

Thank you, Robin, for your comment. I'm sorry for replying so late. I took a little bit of time off to think a little bit clearer. I think that from time to time it's good to stop and ask yourself if you're heading in the direction you really want. Back to the Triple gloss glaze, I read that the climate in which you're living could really influence and spoil the result of the coating. It never happened to me, but I'm not living close to the ocean or in an area with high humidity. And, just like you, in these cases and whenever possible I would use resin. Have an amazing day!
