Having been in law enforcement in Brazil for 18 years I just wanted to thank Gun Christ Redentor for this tribute

This doesn't take into account the Madsen special perk of holy f what are they shooting at us.

The only thing that could complete the series on the Madsen in the modern world would be an interview with a Brazilian policeman who used one in service.

In the early 2000s, Rio de Janeiro police used the M1 carbine in .30 carbine which forced the development of the Taurus/Famae CT30 also in that caliber, since the police liked the rifle with a stronger caliber.

There's recorded footage of a firefight in the favelas where a dude with a Madsen is covering his team which had two critical stoppages on FAL's and had to fix them. One of the soldiers had to completely disassemble the FAL to fix it, while the Madsen ran throughout the action flawlessly. It was something like 6-7 minutes to fix the gun.

Funny enough BOPE guys didn't really use the Madsen, Madsen were for the regular police, BOPE actually had a GPMG, the MG4, sometimes they used Minimis, there is a documentary which I highly recommend, I think it does have subtitles, called: "Retratos de uma guerra particular" in which there is a part dedicated to the loadouts of both BOPE and the Narcos, the BOPE loadout is akin to any spec-ops of that time, even better than some SWAT stuff, but still wasn't a game changer, the documentary showed that pretty well.

As a Brazilian, the situation in the favelas is sad, it's kinda the same of when the Brazilian Army joined the UN to intenvention on Haiti, the difference is that in Haiti there was actual military equipment and supplies...

finally the Rio de janeiro military police loadout. only missing a Taurus that jams every 2 rounds. not sure the BOPE uses those as they get acess to more and better weapons. just the standard military police really edit: ok the berreta also jammed so is realistic

Hey Ian, just some extra info on Brazil and historic/iconic guns here. In the mid 70s, Brazil signed a contract with beretta to provide the army with 9mm pistols, those happened to be the, at the time, new 92 pistols. Those were the original 1st gen 92 pistols with the iconic "step slide", and beretta collectors know those are kinda rare because just the very first batches of those had that slide cut. Those beretta pistols were produced in Brazil, by contract, till 1980 or 81 i believe, and the factories and all machinery were sold to taurus (thus the pt92 was born, since taurus continued the production of the original 92, minus the step slide design) the army requested that taurus would continue offering the 92 pistol (designated as M975 by the army) and with time, taurus made modifications and modernized the design (which again, was the original 92, so it had the mag release at the bottom of the grip, round trigger guard, small sights and a frame mounted safety with no decocker, and that is why taurus has that safety placement to this very day, as it is, after all, a parallel evolution of the 92 design). The army of Brazil still has some of those pistols made by beretta in their arsenal, you can actually check some pictures in their oficial facebook account, and those berettas from like 1976-1980 are mostly still functional, except some don'cycle very well because the army does not get lots of investment and also has a bad tendency of not replacing parts often. To me that is a shame because those step slide mid 70s berettas have huge collectable value and guys are running them to dust basically with little to no care at all.

There's something just so cool about really old guns being used in a modern context with modern gear. That Madsen looks really bad ass.

My first handgun I bought back in early 90’s was a Taurus pt92. It was an excellent pistol.

That one section of the course firing around the sign is basically doing burpees with a 20lb weight. Props to your endurance Ian!

I really appreciate that you value showing us these interesting firearms in action more than you value raking high in the competitions. It's pretty obvious that you would rank much higher if you picked firearms better suited to the match.

Madsen is my favorite weapon since BF1, and the funny thing is that I'm from Rio, I had the opportunity to take a photo with one, actually Madsen were used a lot in the history of Brazil, now on a smaller scale, and it was supposed to be legally removed from the police in 2015 I think, but they continued to maintain it, thank you very much for bringing this reality to light, Madsen is my favorite weapon and has a living history in my state.

I'm a former Corporal of the Brazilian Army, in 2015 I've spent almost a year on Rio de Janeiro fighting the drug milicias the Madsen has been retired a while ago, its a nice plataform but the FAL and the IA2 are the backbone of our forces the stages are similar to our real world situacion except for the heat of 45°C in most of the days...

Surprisingly effective for what it is, explains it's use in the field. I'm sure if it was in its original configuration it'd be that much more "impressive".

Hi Ian, just to mention Beretta use to have a factory in Brasil. Taurus got some of the machines when Beretta left. The PT92 917 are clearly influenced by Beretta 92. They are (in my opinión) the best pistola Taurus produce... with a good magazine of course. About Madsen LMG, they were extensively used during Chaco war between Paraguay and Bolivia. As a Brasilian i think its important to point out an interesting fact about the war against crime in the favelas. In Brazil, the state is unable to control criminal factions in favelas not due to a lack of resources from the security forces, but due to political decisions. In Brazil, the supreme court ordered that police operations could no longer be conducted in favelas except for rare exceptions using the excuse of the Covid-19 pandemic. Criminals in the favelas therefore gained carte blanche to act without opposition from the police. Brazilian favelas have always been violent, but without the police, crime has spiraled out of control. Yes, leftism doesn't just exist in the United States, we also suffer from it here in the third world :D

Before the armoured trucks were in incorporated into the police to provide platoons some cover to progress inside the favelas, the MADSEN was the resource available to suppress barricaded narco men armed with assault rifles and shooting on the patrols trying to gain terrain. Remembering that this WEAPON is only used here in Rio de Janeiro. There are VERY FEW police UNITS that use this antique.

Great video as always! Just a minor clarification for people who (as a lot of Brazilian) get confused at, there are 3 major types of police acting in Rio, military, civil and the BOPE. The BOPE is part of the military but is completely independent of it, the 3 of them have different budget and internal commands and the BOPE being the most specialized force they have the best budget of them, nowadays they don't use those super old guns anymore. So basically the Bope is kinda not part of the military police.

We don't use Taurus 92. The Brazilian military police uses (mostly) the Taurus PT100 in .40S&W

when i lived in brasil (2008) i saw BOPE guys staging for an operation on Rocinha (largest favela in rio) and they mostly had fal osw's ...regular army guys were with them and had fal paras....

Brazilian vet here, we have berettas in the army, not sure about BOPE cause they operate kind on their own rules, but my brother is a cop here in Brazil and cops are restricted to .40 S&W pistols or .38 revolvers, they are in the process of adopting the Bereta APX. As far as I know only military and the Federal Police are allowed 9mm.
