I am Spanish, you pronounce Don Quijote perfectly fine. The book is considered the first modern novel and it is the second most translated book in the world after the Bible. I am glad you loved it, I do too. Fun fact, both Cervantes and Shakespeare, which is also considered the first writer of modern theatre/drama, died the same day of the same year.

the BBC adaptation of War and Peace is nice but the Soviet version from the 60s is incomparable. Its very long (12 hours if I remember correctly) but beyond rewarding. Highly recommend!

My Favorite Books Of 2021: Honorable Mentions - Frankenstein, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, The Grapes of Wrath, The Yellow-wallpaper Favorite Audiobook - Dial A for Aunties. I didn't realise the true power of audiobook until december so there wasn't a lot of competition. This one was just very funny and a delight to listen to Favorite Author - John Steinbeck! Favorite Non-fiction book - Expeditionen (The Expedition) A Swedish book about Andrée's artic balloon expedition which has always interested me, so much original research was done and just solidly entertaining meanwhile. Favorite Middle Grade/ Children’s lit. - Anne of Green Gables Favorite Classic - East of Eden. Just fantastic in every regard (my favourite book I have ever read??) Favorite Sci-fi - Project Hail Mary Favorite Graphic Novel - Mumin: Tove Janssons Collected Comics. Just so funny and adorable, there is some questionable themes though

I’m Russian, and I’m really happy to see that you read Russian literature. It’s so amazing that most of your favourite books of the year(or life) is classic Russian literature. I also love Bulgakov and I would really suggest for you to read “Master and Margarita”. This is like his most famous novel and the best one in my opinion. I read it and re-read it many times. You do amazing work with those little sketches (portraits )you have and I noticed Pushkin right away, and if I’m not mistaking you have Chekhov behind you? I would really love to have some of those sketches for myself, so I hope you shared a link for your Etsy shop where you sell those.

Really enjoyed this presentation, Carolyn. Because you enjoyed Eugene Onegin so much, I wonder if you have ever seen Tchaikovsky's opera. It's superb and you can probably get the DVD from your library. Try to get the Met version featuring Anna Netrebko. Also, War and Peace is truly life changing. It rescued me from a truly dark time in my life in late 1970. About all I did in the latter months of that year was read War and Peace and sleep. To this day, I reread every few years and greatly revere it. Thanks again for your wonderful choices, Carolyn and all the best for 2022.

I enjoyed it) P.s. I have just realised that I forgot about one play “Thunderstorm” by Ostrovskiy I don’t really know how it called in English version, so I hope I was right or quite right)) Happy New Year and always amazing books!!!

I once bumped into Peter O'Toole (literally!) I was leaving Hampstead train station on my way to visit the home of poet John Keats...turned a corner and walked slap bang into Peter O'Toole! In our typically British way we both apologised profusely and went on our way. "Ode To A Nightingale" and "Man Of La Mancha" in one memorable afternoon!

What a wonderful ramble! Such enthusiasm; it's contagious. A few random thoughts...I must read Pushkin. When you read out loud I heard immediately the same rhythm from one of my favourite books, The Golden Gate by Vikram Seth. I just know you will enjoy it, as well as his epic, A Suitable Boy. This weekend my 20 year old son decided to clear out his bookcase. One book that I rescued was The Invention of Hugo Cabernet written and illustrated by Brian Selznick. I will definitely read it now.

If you like Robert Macfarlane I recommend 'The living mountain' by nan shepherd. It's a poetic love letter to life in the Cairngorms in Scotland. She talks a lot about just existing in nature and the different facets of the mountain. Plus the foreword is my Robert Macfarlane as well!

Loved all your classical selections for the year especially War and Peace, really looking forward to delving into the short stories category in the new year for the Dickens vs Tolstoy debate. "The death of ivan ilyich" by Tolstoy, though not a short story, is a shorter work of his which is still one of my favorites. It will be great to see that also incorporated onto the debate if possible. 🙂

I love Don Quixote, its such a sweet, beautiful and f love Peter O'Toole. How To Steel a Million is an all time fave for me, it is such fun. I've read War and Peace in 2021 because of you and it became my favourite book in the whole universe. It's just soooo good. Like I have many other all time favourites of course but this one just stands out. It's genius. I will read this year Don Quixote and hopefully Eugene Onegin. I can't thank you enough for introducing me to these books. I mean, I always knew they existed but would never even think of picking them up on my own. You talk about books with so much love and passion I have to read them :). Good luck to your reading this year, I hope you will introduce us to more amazing books, especially classics. And Happy New Year, thank you for being here 🥰.

What a great list of books to add to my never ending pile of things to read. War and Peace is definitely on my list for this year. I'm curious what translation you read. I have the Rosemary Edmonds edition. There is such a huge debate over which is the best translation so I'm always curious what people think is the best one. The copy I have had such a horrid cover which was warped and just hard to handle that I actually cut it apart and divided the book into it's four books. I work in a print shop so I had all of the supplies needed to recreate them into actual books with new soft covers. My arthritis loves it. lol It's a pretty old copy and I didn't want to toss it. I love the way it smells, almost a spicy paper scent! I also just added Marvels to my library holds list as well. It looks amazing! Always a pleasure to see you Carolyn. Happy Reading!

Highly recommend watching the film version of 84 Charring Cross Rd if you can get your hands on it. Felt that the direction stayed true to the book and of course, beautifully played by the wonderful Anne Bancroft and Sir Anthony Hopkins! really took me back into that time period with all of it's flavors and lovely, classic British and NY Jewish accents.

I love that there are (plenty) books I didn't know about and haven't seen others mention them, added some of them to my bookstore wishlists :D My fave read this year has been Bulgakov's The master and Margarita! Thank you for such an amazing year of videos and amazing books! It was simply a blast watching your videos and listening to you (and Willow of course ❤). I can't express the impact you've had on my life in general and my reading life! As for some of my favourites of the year: audiobooks - anything by Dan Jones, he's a British historian who narrates his own books and has a very good writing style, author - the man himself Leo Tolstoy, non-fiction - Becoming (Michelle Obama), middle-grade/children's lit - The Hobbit. But the most impactful books, clearly War and Peace and Anna Karenina. I hope you'll have great year reading-wise, as well as in everything you do. Much love!

Carolyn, please read Villette by Charlotte Brontë. i saw in one of your vids you have that book and it's unread by you. i just finished the book and don't know what enough to say about it. it's soo different from Jane Eyre and it will have you expecting so much from the characters but Charlotte will give you something you never would have imagined. she so cleverly weaves the characters and their lives together, it just makes sense that each and every character she has mentioned in the story, each plays their role in their own major ways, and i'm sure you'll just looove the beautiful writing and the solemn book. READ IT!

OMG! Yes, Ethan Frome! I read it last year for the first time and it blew me away. I read it again last week(praying it would hold up as well as on the first read) and OMG, it did! I gave it 4.5 on my first read, but 5 stars on the 2nd read. How I didn't give it 5 stars the first time is beyond me. It is a perfect read and I rarely say that. I have maybe 4 books(from the thousands I've read) that are perfect reads. EF is one!

The movie version of "84 Charing Cross Road" starring Anne Bancroft and an under-stated Anthony Hopkins is warmly recommended and succeeds surprisingly well in transforming such un-cinematic material into a compelling viewing experience that perfectly compliments the book.

I saw 84 Charing Cross Road in the West End of London back in the early 80s. Now I am intrigued to see the film and read the book. Also, Anthony Hopkins; I was blown away by his portrayal of Pierre in the BBC adaptation of War and Peace many years ago.

@@lizrobertson2704 Many thanks for the message! I too have fond memories of the Anthony Hopkins "War & Peace" but if anything I thought the more recent BBC adaptation (2016) was even better although I'm ashamed to say I still haven't read the book. .yet!

For Christmas I received a copy of the revised edition of "The Novel 100: A Ranking Of The Greatest Novels Of All Time" edited by Daniel S. Burt. Any top 100 of anything list is necessarily subjective but I thought you would like to know that...drumroll please..."Don Quixote" is ranked number one followed by "War And Peace" at number two! "Ulysses" (TBR?) by James Joyce limps in at number three and Proust's "In Search Of Lost Time/Remembrance Of Things Past" (another TBR?) misses out on the medals in fourth.

When you talk about your favorite books, well, you convince me haha. I read Eugene Onegin by Pushkin, First Love by Ivan Turgenev and White Nights by Dostoevsky (this last one has become one of my favorite books EVER) and I've liked all of them so I think I can trust you with recommendations 😂 In this 2022 I want to read War and Peace, I hope I love it too 🤞 By the way you pronunciation of "Don Quixote" is really good! It sounds as we pronounce it in spanish. I've thought about reading this book but I'm worried lol, I might try and read it in this year. Thank you for another lovely video!

Gentile Carolyn, Dovrebbe essere obbligatorio che I ragazzini guardino i Suoi video in classe! Leggono così poco, oggi... Mademoiselle Carolyn, it should be mandatory for young students to watch your videos in class! Soooo few read nowadays, it's sad...

D. Quijote, what a great book, what a skilled writer Cervantes was. I am glad you have this novel as your favorite since this book is not frequently mentioned in youtuve. It will certainly find more lovers now! My favorite of 2021 is Frenchman`s Creek by Daphne Du Maurier and I think you could like it also. Have a happy day!
