Fawlty Towers: Fire! 

Tossing the typewriter at the alarm and completely missing just wrecks me with laughter every time I watch that scene.

Manuel banging for his life on the door had me in hysterics 😂 😂 😂

I love the way Basil shouts in the old ladies' faces like a dragon. Funny! 🗣

What makes me laugh is Manuel comes out covered in smoke and Basil still doesn't even notice.

This is one of the funniest sequences of comic events.

I love how Basil pushes Manuel back in at 00:48 and has to ignore the smoke to make the scene work. But work it sure does!

I've started rewatching scenes Polly's in to see what she does. She often supports the other actors by either receding into the background away from the comedy, or doing something practical to aid the scene then moving out of the way. This is clever, unselfish acting as she's also one of the writers, as someone has to help the other actors who are being funny to stay unencumbered. A couple of examples from The Germans: once she's tried to urge Basil to "do Jimmy Cagney" and failed, she looks down (possibly to avoid laughing) and very slowly moves to the back and into the kitchen, thus skillfully leaving our total focus on Basil. During the fire drill scene, once Basil's squirted himself in the face with the fire extinguisher and drops it, Polly quickly takes the extinguisher out of the way of Basil and Manuel, allowing Basil to hit his head on Manuel's frying pan and then fall to the floor without either of them falling over the extinguisher. Subtle moves that allow the comedy to have full rein. :-)

John Cleese once said about Fawlty Towers that the audience wouldn't give as big of laugh if the violence didn't look painful.... but admited that he and some of the other actors suffered some scrapes and bruises even though they could've just done it lighter.

Everything about this scene is just perfect. From Basil unknowingly pushing Manuel back into the fiery room, to Basil screaming at God while forgetting he had the key the whole time, to Basil spraying the fire extinguisher into his own face, to Basil falling unconscious before he can hit Manuel. Such a classic show. 😂

It's clear from the intensity they rubbed on too much on Manuels gloves but he saved the scene like a trooper

If you just politely ask the fire to stop, it surely will! First time viewing this scene is a choking hazard from intense laughing.

I love the succession of things, it just never stops! What a brilliant series it was. I know them all nearly by heart, yet I still kill myself laughing watching them over and over again. Thank you to this channel! 😊

This is all caused by Basil who, attempting to get rid of Manuel as the fire drill disintegrates, tells him to 'start the chips', which Manuel presumably had never done before, and which, typically, he then tried catastrophically to do.

Years ago i had a work there nearly everyday was like this. A working pal once said that we should write a book on it but then again, who would believe us. It now rest in my memories and the place is long gone, but i dont forget all the crazy things that happened. 😄👍

Basil is so stupid! I can’t believe he didn’t smell the smoke or notice the fire in the kitchen the first 2 times he forced Manuel back into the kitchen. And even though it was an accident, I’m glad Manuel knocked Basil unconscious with the fry pan! He deserved it! Well done Manuel, I salute you!

Apparently there was a mistake made in this episode and Cleese accidentally whacked Sachs with the real frying pan instead of the prop one.
