Metals are made up of close-packed structures. Consider a hexagonal close-packed layer. You can add atoms on the next layers up. Where you choose to start these layers determines whether you form FCC face-centered cubic or HCP hexagonal close-packed crystal structures. In this demonstration we show you ABA stacking vs ABC packing and visualize the cubic crystal structure with tennis balls.

@@TaylorSparks Yes! I am a PhD student and have to regularly work with close packed structures. We have marbles in our lab that we can place on a square or a hexagonal surface. but these tennis balls have a better visualization

the last few seconds comes a aha moment for me, when u switched the green ball to demo both structures. Thank you so much. I wonder why they cut up HCP lattice straight up but cut up FCC lattice sideways...

so that the unit cell becomes predictable, A unit cell must repeat itself in all directions but if they cut it like the hcp, there will be no regular pattern to the unit cell you could argue that we can make the unit cell of 6 storeys so that it repeats that would instead make it more cumbersome to study

the same cubic close packing comes ,cuz where you place the second layer does not matter.both ccp and hcp depends on the placement of the third layer

Right!?! For years people said that it was just a matter of stacking and I could never quite see it and then when I built the model myself and colored in the corners all the sudden I could see it pretty clearly.
