FDNY Battles Massive 6-Alarm Church Fire | Manhattan NYC 4K 12.5.20 

Your not the first nor the last to question FDNYs tactics from an analytical point of view. Nothing wrong with that.

We got there and there was a building completely engulfed so that's where we start working. We had water on that fire as soon as we got there and trucks evacuating smoke filled exposures full of people sleeping in their beds still. Church was already smoking and ready to go up when we got there but you gotta start in the fully involved building when you get to it.

News stories I could find state the fire started in a vacant 5 story next to the historic Middle Collegiate Church. Dec 5 2020. It was under repair from a previous fire earlier in 2020 and tenants were told to move. It's been somewhat inconclusive but investigations point to an electrical origin in the restaurant on the first floor.

Ladder 9 is a truck, we don't supply water to ourselves. Engine supplies it to us. Not gonna throw the engine that was supposed to supply us under the bus, things aren't so simple out there in that moment and not everything goes smooth but thankfully Engine 33 was able to supply us when they could.

ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE AN ENTRAPMENT (y’all have less driving than the south or some other places) BUT when like 12/24/2017 we had a NIGHTMARE @12:44AM 15 and 16 yr old sisters and person on drugs and drinking caused the wreck, well the sister that lived barely (constant care for rest of her life though) we had to use turnout gear and blankets to wrap her up because how bad the vehicle was and the gas line and us (actually my husband specifically on this call) having to cut so much. 5 1/2 hours to get her out. I was squeezed in assisting the paramedic holding her (sometimes being small is better) 😉😉 but there are just certain ones you don’t forget and more to the story but between that and a SWAT situation where I was also working the scene. Well I just can’t help it sometimes and I know when I can and can’t say something and what BUT boy I needed to vent today. I just drive the Rescue, Engines, or Tanker or man the tanker on the scene. Maybe one day I can work the can.

Not sure that really makes a pattern. Besides, the fire originated in the MD, not the church.

Pro-active leadership and fireground management, along with 6-alarms worth of badass FDNY members, saved the 6 surrounding buildings including the interconnected rectory to the church, in addition to the non-fireproof tenements down wind that were being inundated and covered by flying brands. The original fire building was under renovations from a previous three alarm fire and had openings throughout the entire structure. It was fully involved upon arrival. That building was a loss way before the department's arrival (how do I know? Unlike you, I have seen the security footage from across the street which shows the fire's progression from start through the FDNY's arrival). The loss of the church was extremely unfortunate and sad. However, and what you obviously do not know, is that the badass firefighters who forced entry, entered to search, and stretched a charged hoseline into that church were driven out by a flashover and ceiling/roof collapse within minutes of their arrival. Oh yeah, that chief who you said was instructing the firefighters on how to use the ground monitor? He was actually making sure they were aware and operating out of the collapse zone of the original fire building, the church facade, and the church steeple. But from your armchair and vast experience, that little thought obviously never entered your brain. If you're ever in a leadership position, I hope you can accomplish one-quarter of what the FDNY did at this fire.
