Thank you to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) for allowing us to share this Exterior Fire Control training video on our channels. UL FSRI has been partnering with the FDNY for over a decade to bring fire science to the streets. Watch this video for details on a real-life example of how they are continuing to put UL FSRI research into practice on the fireground.
This episode of the FDNY Chief’s Corner highlights specific uses of exterior water streams and the importance of fireground communication and coordination.
Special thanks to Chief of Operations Thomas J. Richardson and Chief of the Fire Training Academy and UL FSRI Coordinated Fire Attack Technical Panel Member Frank Leeb for allowing us to share this training video with our followers!

I am very happy to see Chief Richardson endorse these tactics and spread the word to the troops. It seems like the beginning of an important culture change for FDNY. With the vast proliferation of RU-vid videos covering FDNY operations, we have all seen cases where early water from the exterior would surely have made a big difference to control fire spread in delayed entry / Collyers Mansion cases. You'll have to make more of these videos to drive home the point, but it's a great start. Bravo, Chief!

Using this tactic and pointing the knob at the correct angle allows the water droplets to absorb the heat as is they were coming from a sprinkler head It is fast and effective particularly if a 1 3/4 line is employed Been there done that

Usually it's minutes and minutes go by as the fire intensifies. That's the FDNY way .. let it burn call another box and let's it look good for the media.

It was compete Bullshit. Everything they said was a Provable Lie! Common sense and logic dictate the use of exterior applied water to Visible Burning Material. You don't have to make decades of mistakes and kill off firefighters to figure that out. P.S. You are one of the first firefighters from the FDNY to ever show the use of common sense and logic. 3:00 This when you allowed the fire to remain while you made ridiculous efforts to get a door open which killed the 11 year old girl and burned one of your FFers. That fire should have been totally extinguished long before any of the videos of this fire even began. That performance goes way beyond ridiculous. THE FIRE IS RIGHT THERE! Everything you are saying a 10 year old with grade school science could figure out. What you are REALLY saying is, you have screwed up so much it is getting obvious, so NOW you are planning to stop playing HERO with interior attacks while you allow the fire to get bigger and GET THE JOB DONE, NOW! You are just now STARTING to use exterior hose streams. You have ONLY used exterior streams on Visible Burning Material After you have unsuccessfully tried it from inside. By then the fires have become HUGE! That is the MO of the FDNY! 6:00 This is an example of Braindead Irresponsibility! Wait until the door is open so we can go inside and play hero. No thought whatsoever toward Getting The JOB Done! 6:15 Thinking Outside The Box? The FDNY doesn't Think at all and their performance Proves it. 6:56 Get ready for the misrepresentation of the real facts. This is total BS but it sure makes them sound good. They lined up at that door for many, many minutes, Minutes, MINUTES allowing an 11 year old girl to suffocate and burn and one of their fellow firefighters to Burn just so they could allow the fire to burn while they tried to get through the door. They show you water being applied but they don't show when that application started since arrival or that they turned it off right where they cut the film and the fire Immediately reignited to full volume. That firefighter on the nozzle reluctantly applied that water out of frustration and was going against policy and was probably reprimanded. This officer sure does make it SOUND like they were acting responsibly and professionally, doesn't he? 7:25 This is 100% BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is lying through his teeth! LYING! Go watch the videos of this fire for your self and keep track of time. 7:35 Try to find ONE video where they apply water to the VBM immediately after arrival. 8:06 Here it comes again. Who was protected by a few seconds of water? That heat is going right up the stairs where the girl and firefighter are. P.S. As a representative of the FDNY, you do Not instill confidence but I'm sure civilians got a warm fuzzy feeling from your presentation. Watch these videos and read my comments and ask your self, "Why aren't we applying tank water to the Visible Burning Material and stopping this threat now?" FDNY Bad Fire Fighting (youtube.com)

When i was a roookie fireman i was told not to put water on a fire from the outside. Common sense was put water on as soon as possible. So i wated untill next engine arrived so we could go in. By that time the fire was all in the attac and over our heads. Needless waiting and the fire was much larger and more dangerous for us all but they were all tought pushing fire nonsense.

His logic is still faulty. HE keeps saying they start with a aggressive interior attack and when and only when they don’t or can’t make any headway they changed tactics and used the outside line. Science and tactics have been proven time ad time again that with visible fire hit it from outside FIRST with a smooth or straight stream for approximately 15-20 seconds before even entering the building. It will not push the fire or smoke. Then transition to a interior attack. The FDNY was part of the studies with UL/NIST and they still can’t get it right.
