Instead of scraping them fix them up and sell them to volunteer fire departments in the south especially ones that have shoestring budgets.
@rj-yy2gm
@rj-yy2gm 5 лет назад
That does happen a lot. Only thing is they usually go to volunteer departments near NYC that have less than a shoestring budget. Some of those places up north are still using trucks from the 80's. One of these rigs is like a treasure chest to them. New paint where needed, wax and shine, redo the interior and refit the pump and you've got a brand new truck.

Certainly there are Fire Departments that have even volunteer mechanics to fix them and put in to work.....

Some that are in ok shape, do find another home. But these FD's end up putting a $100K in them just to make them run and most of all NFPA compliant. Other's you don't want, they are so beat up the only place for them is the bone yard, and thats of course is after the shops strip them of parts.

Boy if those rigs could talk the stories they would tell....seeing some of those fine rigs in disrepair is heartbreaking.

FDNY seems to be buying a lot of Ferrara's these days. I guess Seagrave isn't doing too well.

A bunch of those trucks are replacement apparatus after 9/11. You can tell by the medallion on the front between the windshields. It was a big deal when those trucks were brand new being put into service.

@@robw9412 they sure did. They were donated by Alcoa as part of their tribute series. I'm kinda surprised the FDNY didn't stick with them.

The thing is they may look really good on the outside but it's like looking at the body of a 25 year old that has the internals of a 90 year old. Fire apparatus get worn out and FDNY runs them into the ground and they in turn have a life span of about 10 years. These trucks and engines are very utility with no chrome like back in the day. They are tools that need replacing. They do get resold at auction and smaller departments will buy them for pennies on the dollar and and then rehab them to bring them back up to spec. You can get a used engine for under $5,000 and rehab it for 25,000 and no you've got basically a brand new engine for around 30-35k That will run for 20 years. FDNY churns and burns apparatus. Now they wouldn't even spring for Federal Q's for the rigs, they use that god awful electric Q which sounds horrible.
@rj-yy2gm
@rj-yy2gm 5 лет назад
A lot of, if not all of these apparatus will be maintained as part of the reserve fleet of the FDNY. Also called the "500 series". The rest will get auctioned off.

.....I'm gonna miss Old E54...I'm not a fan of the new "look" to the 2013-2014 Seagrave engines....I liked the 2008-2010 Seagrave engines. But this new look the FDNY is going for....It's just not FDNY.

Wouldn't it be better to just rebuild the engines and transmissions on these units instead of springing for new units?

Some that are in ok shape, are sold to other FD's. But these FD's end up putting a $100K+ in them just to make them run again and most of all NFPA compliant. The other problem is that trucks over 20 years old like most of these trucks are, (or close to it), are no longer covered by "full coverage" insurance, requiring them to be replaced about every 20 years or so.

Its dumb how they spend all that money putting leds on those spares and they use them as spares for a year or they dont get used at all they can atleast do something with those
@ourmilotin2819
@ourmilotin2819 3 года назад
A lot of these rigs would have been replacements for companies who lost rigs during 9/11, meaning that at the time of the video they would have been about 15ish years old. For the FDNY, those rigs would be very well used and have miles and engine hours. Some of these rigs would have been cannibalised for rigs still in service or used as spares. When you have 193 engine companies, a lot of rigs come and go
