/ membership Sorry to expose you as a fraud Frapollo, but I've gotta let the people know you explained something poorly and got misinterpreted. Jonestown discord: / discord Edited by Me
Noob: Defense is useful Frapollo: Defense is a lie Bones: Defense is a suggestion Me: Defense is a scam to make new players use the "Optimize" command and get trolled equipping non removable stuff so they learn to not trust the inventory
Frapollo and Alll-Mer Jones arguing is just the Fear and Hunger equivalent of the "when both of the smartest kids in your class have different answers" meme.
I like how what you said and what Frapollo said don't contradict each other at all. Cause you're right in the sense that typically the defense stat is supposed to communicate that the armor is better, while Frapollo said that the stat has nothing to do with the actual damage calculation with the exception of that one lizardman attack, which is also correct. I suppose the completely accurate statement would be "Defense Doesn't Do What you Think it Does", but I think "Defense is a lie" makes for a better title. I love that the Fear & Hunger RU-vidrs I've seen all have a flair for the dramatic and a good sense of humor! Great video, btw!
i'm gonna go with "miro forgot." like how trenchcoat has 30 def instead of 20 def with all the other 20 def things it ties with, it's probably just a typo
Are the UI and stats so wonky because of RPG Maker Hardcoding shenanigans, or could one theoretically display the information better? I have no experience with coding oder RPG Maker, so I have no clue.
Thanks for explaining, the way the stats work in this game and the sequel is just really unusual. So if I have it right, Attack stat determines weapon damage directly through a calculation using the opponents defence, Def and Magic Def are based on damage reduction percentages of various damage sources, Magic attack affects spell damage like regular attack (but no way to increase this in the first game), Agility uses breakpoints of 16 to get extra turns and luck affects change of inflicting status aliments and increasing crit damage (but not really).
attack affects physical damage defense does almost nothing, but indicates equipment with higher elemental resistance towards blunt/piercing/slashing magic attack does nothing magic defense does literally nothing, but indicates equipment with higher elemental resistance towards otherworldly luck affects the chance of inflicting status ailments by a minuscule amount agility gives battlers extra turns when their agility is higher than the opponent's. this applies both ways, a certain boss gets extra turns if you don't use agility boosts like white angel or fast stance
I think what Frapollo meant to say, of St least what I understood from his video, is that the defense stat is semi-arbitrary and misleading, as it doesn't accurately explain the intricacies of the defensive properties that armor pieces confer. Of course, hyperbole and language have a way of screwing with mutual understanding, but oh well.
Not only is defense a useful guide for these sorts of things, but it enables the optimize feature to give the "best" armor (generally, and outside some probable typos). Optimize is almost certainly why the penace armors have 0 def. Considering characters have a flat 100hp, a % based reduction was obvious, but getting the numbers you want would be tricky when there is "just use element resists" right there.
You know, I really wish Miro had added the Iron Mask's Eye protection to the Penance Armor! Double Headed Crow Mauler just ended my run by pecking my eyes out!
Frapollo was just explaining the mechanics of how def numbers work, which is on skill "counter" that the lizardman has. Any attacks except that skill the def stat numbers are useless. When you said the number are useful because the higher number of def stat ,the higher resist from elements you get well that's true on some majority of situations but there are some situations that you need to think about before you fight like on your video was saying, chainmail hood are great against piercing however the def stat is low. So def indeed was a lie there's nothing wrong about that
@@all-bonesjonesyes, im not saying that you're wrong about higher def armor offers more protection. Im just saying that the numbers are really are useless ( the real def number, not the intent of the def number) therefore there's some situations that need for looking what to wear the best resist armor when fighting the enemy's elements.
I like your funny words funny bone man Tbh at this point you should be helping with the update or codes for fear and hunger cuz I can bet my liver that you know this game more than the author does
See, I was always under the impression that the defense stat was part of the game's obfuscation of information. You can use it as a guideline, but you can't rely on it, having to make your best guesses based on item descriptions. (particularly evident in how light armor mentions it's weakness/resistance against fire) That, and the defense stat is also there for the simple reason that the "Optimize" button still exists in this game; if everything had Defense 0, then that button would be non functional. It has to have something to go off of. Personally, it's why I'm not super into the fact that Termina displays all of the resistances outright; while it does give the player more reliable information, I think that's just not nearly as interesting. Ultimately both systems have their flaws, and I'm not really sure what system would work best overall.
this is a really good analysis that brings up something i didn't even think to include in the video. personally i think both the trenchcoat and chainmail hood were typos on miro's part, which is why they're both outliers. trenchcoat was probably meant to have 20 defense instead of 30, hood was probably meant to have 90% piercing resistance instead of 80%. if he hit adjacent numbers on the keyboard by mistake, then it would fix the two biggest outliers. it was meant to be clear information but miro screwed up
Termina is a surprisingly different game from the original fear and hunger at it's core. It's not the same kind of gygaxian dungeon crawler where "the real treasure is the knowledge the dead gave the players". It's story structure is also extremely different.
@@woomod2445 Oh, I completely agree on that! I'd say that the more perfect information does work better for the type of game Termina is, even if I personally don't prefer it.
@@all-bonesjones I'd be willing to believe that as well. It's likely one of those things that could be fixed, but the hassle of doing so (even if it's as simple as a changing two numbers) probably isn't worth it at the moment. Though even if they were fixed, while it would be clear information, it wouldn't be *perfect* information, as the player would have no way of knowing how much each defense point actually does, or the exact resistance values. That's the difference between how Termina and the original sets things up that I was trying to get at; it's clear, but still requires the player to make estimations and makes them more uncertain about how exactly protected their characters truly are.
knowing fear and hunger, we should be happy we even have an indicator of what armor has better defense instead of having to find out through trial and error
There's particular "Triple A" game that actually using defense mechanism just like Fear & Hunger does and its Romancing Saga or SaGa Series by Square Enix games. the game also calculate defense stats by the Piercing,Blunt, and Slashing. and some Mobs are resisting while also weakned by that. Particularly Skeleton that it Resist Slashing but vulnerable to Blunt.
hey i have a question, how do you put the game in rpg maker like, how you can see the tings like the plugings, stats, assets, etc. i tried a lot to put the game in rpgmaker but i couldn't so please if anyone know how to do it explain it to me
I want to object so badly, but I honestly agree with it too much to argue against your conclusion. Defense is there to help the player gauge the relative defense capabilities of a piece of gear. However! I also think that its used in a deceptive way! the hard leather, the vest, and the fur armor all share defense, but have fairly significant variance in fire resistances as the bone father has so graciously pointed out. Therefore; Defense is NOT a lie! Defense is a LIAR! or at the very least, an unreliable numerical representation of defensive potential. the fear and hunger version of dbz power levels
According to the game files: the Black Dress provides 1% of damage resistance to Slashing and Piercing, and the Loincloth provides 3% for Piercing and Blunt. So, not exactly zero protection, but less than everything else.
sighing slider has it. they're not 0%, but the damage reduction is so miniscule it's indistinguishable from 0%. by themselves, the only time you'll see black dress do anything is when it reduces chomp from 120 to 119, and loincloth only reduces damage by 1 when you take 34 or more damage from piercing or blunt in a single hit.
The stat gives an idea how damage will be prevented, but I do wish it was directly related to the formula. It's weird, even if Orange has a spreadsheet with the math done and everything lines up with the actual percentages, I want to know the numbers are directly referenced. Maybe it's just how RPGMaker works, it's janky and has dozens of plugins for how the combat system works. I also get annoyed when I see a soul ability that say I get more damage or +1 magic damage, k what does that mean? Do I do 10 more damage? Is that multiplied by something? I see weapons with tens of attack damage and seem to scale upwards but I generally don't go into the code to see how my attack relates to damage done and once I know it's not all what it seems I second guess everything.
Are you planning to do the same for the luck stat? Does it improve your chance of winning a coin flip? Does it make you more likely to score a critical hit or dodge an attack? I'm kind of curious to know if luck does anything at all to affect your chances, or if it's just a placebo effect.
functionally nothing technically boosts the odds of landing status effects for things with a chance to inflict status effects but it's so small it's impossible for a human to notice
@@all-bonesjones Do you have any tips on how to be better at winning a coin toss? Or do we just have to pray to the "God of Random Numbers" that the coin lands on tails instead of head.
@@hanzkidzmy strategy - count how much in a row was certain combination of coins Ex: if it was tails, heads, tails, its better to go heads Ex. 2: if triple tails, go heads
it's good that you've explained it for new players but defence should become a more consistent stat (like for each 5% total resist the defence stat goes up by 1) like Defence between armours and accessories/shields is inconsistent for example in termina (the Cloth armour is +8 defence for a total of 55% resistances while the Ballistic shield is +4 defence for a total of 80% resistances) 🙏so we're gonna need a termina guide eventually O lord BONES bless us with Termina guides 🙏🜍
