Fearless 2nd Position Lick! 🎙🎵
This week I decided to finally start breaking down some of my own blues harmonica licks, which is something I constantly get messages and requests about. SO here I am with my Hohner Harmonica, breaking down a quick lick on the IV chord in 2nd Position on a C Harmonica (playing in the key of G) from one of my live performances...this full song as well as over. an hour of live performance video is in this month's Member section of my BadAss Harmonica website! - Don’t forget to check out the BadAss Harmonica Membership levels with video lessons, webinars, and other 24/7 streaming content on the BadAss Harmonica website - badassharmonic...

I have been teaching Blues Harmonica worldwide for over 30 years, and performing professionally the world over for just as long. Currently performing, touring and recording with the Nick Moss Band ("Band Of The Year" 2024 Blues Music Awards) signed on Alligator Records.
I have also collected, rebuilt and restored thousands of vintage blues harmonica mics and bullet microphones, including Astatic JT-30, Astatic T-3, Shure Green Bullet, 707A, Turner bullet mics and many more.
Some of my favorite players who I studied are: james cotton, big walter horton, little walter, papa lightfoot, george harmonica smith, junior wells, sonny boy williamson, william clarke, kim wilson, rod piazza, steve guyger, jim liban, rick estrin, jason ricci, ronnie shellist, adam gussow, and many more...

Thanks!! Haha, and it is so true. I obviously know the techniques I use, but trying to figure out how I put things together and my timing, plus the ideas that come out of nowhere… sometimes I throw myself off 😂😂

The hardest thing to grasp/replicate if your incredible ability to subtly swing the beat ahead and behind within the same phrase. Only other player alive that does it as well is Kim Wilson, but it’s a totally different feel with yours. So damn good man.

@@norfolknwhey4787 thank you! It over goes overlooked or unnoticed…but the feel is so important! Kim is great… but I must say Rod Piazza’s timing is also impeccable and often swings ahead and behind, back and forth, quite a bit ⚡️

@@DennisGruenling I’ve heard some of Rod’s music, but now I’m gonna go search for more of it. I appreciate the info. You guys are in a league of your own.

Thank you Dennis. I do like to tongue block. My biggest problem is not being able to bend on hole 3. Players say it will come at some point. They say do not stop tongue blocking. I am trying to hang with it. You are a true inspiration.

Thank you so much! It will come, but let me help. I often get students blocking and starting to bend in the first lesson. The trick to bending is it all depends on controlling your airflow, whether you are blocking or not. Choke off the airstream towards the back of your throat to get the most common bends on 2-3 on the common key harps

Dennis- Fearless Fridays are gonna be awesome! To me the magic of this is not so much laying out the notes but giving your thought process of what you were trying to do with the lick in context. THANK YOU!

I can get more into that as well… that is what I do with most of my teaching… it is the WHY behind everything that means the most⚡️ Not so much my thoughts process when I play because it’s immediate (not really a conscious thought in the moment) but there is a reasoning to why I go places and how/why it all works 👍

Thank YOU! After years of so many requests, it's time, and it helps ME learn my own stuff as well...haha!! I am always improvising when I perform and play, so none of this is written out or pre-meditated. Enjoy!!

Of course. I started out not blocking like most people. All are welcome here, just keep in mind that T-blocking will help in all areas of playing (breath control, tone, and all types of sounds and techniques available)…and honestly it is not as difficult as people think it is. But I am aware not everyone does it. Many of the sounds, textures and techniques you hear me play come from blocking however…thanks for sticking around!

As long as you work on just getting a good slap/vamp down, the rest comes with using the technique more and more.
