The celebration is a part of the routine. The other is calm. Germans like to have fun as well as to contemplate in silence.
Walking through its splendid old town, with the residence of the Electors and Kings of Saxony in the center, unfolds all the extraordinary charm of the city, which is rightly called the Florence of the Elbe.
The total population of Dresden exceeds 550,000 inhabitants and its corresponding administrative region, one and a half million. The first settlements in this area date from the Neolithic period. In the year 1206 the name Dresden is mentioned for the first time.
On the left bank of the river, at the zenith of a charming meander, is the center of Dresden, dotted with marvelous Renaissance, Baroque and Classicist buildings. Looking at it from the opposite bank or from one of the Elbe bridges, it is clear why this is an internationally renowned cultural city.
It is fair to say: the distribution of the country's art treasures in all German cities was not excessively fair. And it is that in Dresden so many have accumulated over the centuries, that we cannot help but be surprised by so much beauty around us.
Anatomies and costumes, architecture and decoration seem to be one thing in Dresden. There is a lot of centennial culture walking through its streets.
Despite the serious damage suffered in World War II, the historic center has preserved or restored its architectural ensembles. Dresden is exciting, no matter where you look at it. Hand in hand with this extraordinary heritage, the contemporary also does its bit, blending tradition and modernity.
Enjoying one of the many bars and outdoor cafes, or traditional Saxon cuisine at the fair stalls and promenades is only a small part of the pleasure that is breathed here.
Wandering aimlessly through the alleys, stopping to look at the shop windows and shop windows is something that can consume our days without us realizing it.
For art lovers there are 44 museums, 56 galleries and 36 stages that provide fun and intellectual pleasure to satisfy all demands. Also as a musical city Dresden has enjoyed international fame for almost 700 years.
The Saxon State Orchestra, the Philharmonic and the Choir of the Holy Cross produce true admiration; attractive festivals, theater and dance productions, and massive events that are more than enough reasons to visit the city at any time of the year.
Of course, the weather is more pleasant from spring to autumn. Dresden has cold winters where everything seems grayer, quieter, less relevant.
The afternoon became deep and we fell inside, this Germany is, if you will, more German than the other that we have seen in many cities on the western flank. Dresden is a feast for the eyes.
