We tested both left and right wing for our channel and did not notice the right wing to significantly minimize "loose" tips so recommended our viewers cheat a little with a slight bit of wax or locktight medium strength works well too. Great job helping to clarify for people.

Ya know, your diagram at 6:48 is the only one I could find that displays the orientation of the fletching in regards to the knock.

Third way of identifying left or right wing: There's also a visible difference in surface roughness on feathers. On the bird, the top surface is smoother. On a right wing feather, (if I remember rightly) the smooth side is on the right of the fletching, looking from the back of the shaft. That's also, allegedly, one reason feathers still impart spin when fletched straight; the fletch turns toward the smooth side in flight as (the theory goes) the airflow is faster over the smooth side and hence the effective pressure slightly lower. Same theory as asymmetric wing airfoils on aeroplanes. Ish. How true that is, and how important, is another question: feathers have a natural curl so I'm guessing that might be a hard theory to verify.

Thank you. I had known some of this before. So I've started building my own arrows and had come up with a design that use a threading tool to create the insert directly into the wooden shaft. Your side advice the right feathers will cause the head to tighten would explain why my feild points keep stripping out the whole. Over tightening metal into wood. The wood won't have a chance. Thank you for bring this to my attention.

thank you very much i know this comment is 7 year late but i wanted to make my own arrows for some time now and the only tutorial ive found on how to make it explained they need to be from the same wing so this helped alot

Great... Just what I wanted to know... One problem... Holding the feather away from me, looking down it with the quill facing me, I can see it's a right hand feather, but if I turn it upside-down, it instantly becomes a lefty.... But it matters not at all, so long as they're all lefties or all righties... I'm a new customer by the way and love your shop...

If you say you can't differentiate between the sounds of the arrow you have to be down. Range to hear the arrow coming and then you will see. Parabolic is much quieter than shield, which I've tested personally. And howard hill said that's why he used them lefty

My uncle who is a glider pilot instructor told me in a conversation about my arrow feathers that the shape is irrelevant.. He said surface area is all that really matters, more surface area more stabilization but also more drag so slightly less speed, want more speed and less stabilization make the arrow feather smaller..

do you think right winged fletching is more prone to get a right handed shooter feather cut on the bow hand (and left wing to left handed)? I fletched some right winged arrows and got bitten pretty bad. although a wrap around the tip of the quill fixed the problem, my left winged arrows never had this problem. Although frankly speaking the left winged ones were more professionally fletched with shorter feathers so it's probably not a fair comparison..

3:28 you forgot to mention that the other trade off between big and small is the little ones correct over a larger period so they are used for long distance shooting

I always use the 3 feathers on the left side or the 3 on the right side, for me it doesn't matter when shooting as long as the 3 are on the same side.

So to put on a right wing feather, to a shaft, you can't use fletching tape you have to use glue. What I'm trying to get at the Decut Nexus P Jig will do R W feathers at a 90 degree settiing, but you only can use glue on the feather quill itself, and clamp it in the jig and bring it down onto the shaft to save the curve of the feather. Tape can not be used , or how do you set the tape to match up with the twist of the quill. ?? hope you understand what I mean ? Are they really worth the both to keep the arrow true ??

Question!! If I wanna do 4inch feather fletches for recurve shooting, in right helical, do I offset the jig? (using red bohning jig) or do I not do that?
@LukasVos
@LukasVos 8 лет назад
I want to make historical/medieval arrows. I already made some with feathers in the Mary Rose style (4 inch long, the width of a finger high [sorry, I am not really familiar with inches, maybe 2 cm high]) and pointed to the back, and totally love them. But now I saw another type of feathers on an altar, approximately 8 inch long, maybe 1,5cm high and totally triangular. What would you say? Let's have a try and make 3-4 of them or would you advise against it? I have no experiences with long feathers and would like to hear a second opinion.

Uhggg... Why can't I find the real answer to my question? I have a pile of turkey wing feathers that were given to me a decade ago. How do I tell what wing they are from? How do I separate the feather from the quill to make a RH or LH fletching? I thought and hoped the answer would be here.
@kovarilaszlo3146
@kovarilaszlo3146 5 лет назад
Hey! I've got an answer for you. Usually a feather from a wing has two sides: one that is wider and softer, and the other is narrower, but harder. Usually we go for the wider part of the feather. Hold the feather in your hand, with it's prettier side facing you. If the wide part is on the right side, than it is a right wing feather. You can actually tilt it to the right and imagine it in it's primary context (in a wing...). The soft and wide side of the feather always faces to the back of the bird, if it stretches it's wings. Of course, it goes all the other way around with a left wing feather.
@kovarilaszlo3146
@kovarilaszlo3146 5 лет назад
to make fletching out of a feather, you take a fine blade (like a cutter), and cut the quill in half carefully. than you can chisel the bulk away on a sandpaper.

Great vid but one question. How many feathers on the shaft? I have seen 2, 3 (most common) and 4 (I'm not including Flu-Flu's). I will admit that I have only seen 1 guy (Lampi100) shoot with only two feathers but his arrows fly very straight. I have experimented with it but I am very limited on fletching in my area and had to use 4 inch. I have seen a few using 4 fletch. What would be the plus's and minus's of each?
@MerlinArchery
@MerlinArchery 8 лет назад
It's kind of the same as using big feathers... With 4 you gain fantastic stability but loose a fair bit of speed .
@Gamerdude535
@Gamerdude535 8 лет назад
+Dan0e30 It depends. Rule of thumb less fletching = more arrow speed and more fletching = better/quicker flight stability. I personally think I favor three fletch with 5 inch feathers the most

It's not arrow segments I'm trying to identify, it's whole feathers. How do I identify left or right-wing origin of WHOLE feathers? (A friend brought me some found turkey feathers. Right now I'm using duct tape "feathers" on arrows I made, lol!)
@ItsLRod
@ItsLRod 6 лет назад
Renaye Brown, Hold the whole feather with the quill side down and the feather side up. If you there is a little ridge on the right side, it is a right wing feather. If the ridge is on the left side, it is s left wing feather.

Hi , I'm new to archery... Can someone tell me how do you choose arrows for your bow? Is it down to the draw weight of the bow? Secondly which Flemish bow string is the best? I need a separate one. Is the hoyt Flemish good? Or the Decron one? Thanks

What the hell? With my feathers these two methods seem to be contradictory. Maybe it’s because the wings are from a King Parrot I dunno. I’m gonna go with the L shape method. Thanks for the info though

Where did they get millions of feathers for the arrows in ancient wars? Did they use chickens? It had to have been something consciously thought about. They didn't make just like 10 arrows.

Pleace. I sadly have to Point out that you singing is..."not got there", agtually.🤔😉☝🏻️🤗 But fethers. Isn't that nice that we have fantastic natur prowided arrow guidens that comes with many colours and shapes. I hit best with parabolic. Try out shields but no. Just didn't hit any good. Fethers and spring. They give hope for better and strater arrow flite. Thise trad style is constant sheardch to get that perfekt flite. But i have habits to sthange (no thange, no thange, those silent letters...) and then the fine tuning goes out the window. Start again. Hope to get my fethers, liter points and limbs soon. Ps: Intusiastic arrow releaser sighn out. Peace and good delivery with ...i don't try to poem in English and any other language.😗
