Feather Flourish Calligraphy

Here I'm practicing making a feather flourish based off of one of Master Penman Michael Sull's pieces with a few of my own touches.
How quickly can you learn how to feather flourish? Well, what you see in this video is my 30th copy, which shows you can learn rapidly if you are willing to do it over and over. I could not make a feather flourish before doing this. You will need to have mastered whole arm movement.
The key to feather flourishes is building up a set of simple shapes repetitively to make a beautiful pattern which looks like a feather.
But, making a beautiful pattern with your repeated shapes is the hard part, and this is where you should copy a master's work, either the old masters throughout history which you can study on iampeth.com or the modern Master Penmen whose names, youtube channels, and works you can search for.
Currently this is the only feather flourish I know, but as I (and hopefully you) study different kinds of flourishes the more patterns we will have in our minds to pull from to be able to mix and create different patterns and create our own unique works of art.
If you'd like to know the materials I used, I was using a Nikko G nib and a rosewood oblique holder with Daniel Smith walnut ink from Paper and Ink Arts and cheap cardstock paper.

I am impressed about your hard work to achieve a very good control apon your muscles. I covered hundreds of xerox papers with the basic oval shape, I practiced hours and hours but still I can't control my arm movement as good as you are doing it. I know how difficult it is this and I really appriciate your effort. I quit doing arm movements exercises few months before but now, after watching your video, I think I will pick up my hour glass oblique penholder once again.

Awesome! I'm glad to hear it! It's tough but I know you can do it. Maybe try something new you haven't done before instead of the circle exercises, like a really fancy capital or a neat flourish you like :)

Which nib have you used for this? It seems pretty flexible and seems to gold a good amount of ink.

It's a Nikko G Nib :) it has a great balance between flexibility and stiffness. If you want even more flexible, you can try the Zebra G nib

hello, Joseph:) Once again I really appreciate what you have done. I would like to know if you have shown this work to Mr. Michael Sull and if you did I would like to know what did he say about it. Thank you so much.

Hey! I think the best way is to start at Iampeth's website and choose a book you want to study, and drill on the alphabet from that book. First start with individual letters and practice them until you feel they are pretty similar, and then learn how to connect the letters properly and make words. You could learn this from any of the books at this link: www.iampeth.com/rare-books? so there is no going wrong! Also, read the book too. Usually these books will have a breakdown for every single letter and every single stroke to make that letter so you can really see how the script is formed from the same basic strokes over and over, which will help you be able to picture the correct letters in your head and compare them to what you've written.

Joseph, I've had trouble getting readable copies from IAMPETH's digital files, even asked for help at the copy shop. They couldn't produce readable copies either. "The Arm Movement Method of Rapid Writing" interests me now, but from experience, i think it won't print out clearly. Are there any secrets to getting readable copies? (Yes, some files are better than others.) Thank you for your video. It's really helpful.
