Feathery Petri Tutorial

A brief summary of the tutorial;
I am pouring the resin to the molds and mixing my resin tints/pigments (you can use any tint, pigment, paste, the key is adding a very little white into the colors) with %99 isopropyl alcohol (you can use %91-99 range) in seperate cups/ice cube tray. Dropping the colors and give them a swirl with a toothpick/needle. Wait for 1 hour (in the tutorial video it is written in the wrong part 😂)(waiting time that depends on the resin brand, so you may need to make some experiment on timing - I am using different brands and this one is a brand for electronics) and give a swirl to them once more (this part is for making the petri effect feathery). Then wait for demolding.
The color mix;
I am eyeballing it but let me say, 1 part resin + 3-4 drops of tint/paste + 1/2 part Alcohol. You need to test it in a sample piece before you add the colors to all the batch. Once you drop your mix, it needs to spread a bit, if it doesn't then you need to add more alcohol to the color mix.
Hope you enjoy :)

@fairyspunfibers9098
@fairyspunfibers9098 2 года назад
Different resins have different mixing ratios. Ratios can be: 1:1, 2:1, even 3:1. Depends a lot on purpose resin is made for: topcoat, deepcast, art resin, etc...

I'm sorry of this is a dumb question - the color you used is just pigment right, NOT alcohol inks? And is the adding of the isopropyl sort of to mimic an alcohol ink without it spreading out? I hope that makes sense!
@fairyspunfibers9098
@fairyspunfibers9098 2 года назад
@Nicole Sparks That is correct! She uses pigment pastes, NOT inks, not transparent resin dyes (although these MAY work if you add a bit of white resin DYE/tint to each color!). She uses 99% alcohol (I got mine off Amazon in USA) mixed in with the pigment paste/resin mixture to thin it out enough that the colors float and spread on the surface, rather than just sit on the surface like a blob. 😊 It takes quite a lot of alcohol to achieve a very thin quality of pigment. The isopropyl alcohol also creates the movement of the colors we see. As another resin artist says: the colors dance. 😊

@fairyspunfibers9098
@fairyspunfibers9098 2 года назад
@Suzette Kath From what I've seen in her replies, you can use translucent dyes but you have to add a bit of white...? I'm assuming that means either white dye or white pigment paste, then 97-99% isopropyl alcohol added to that. Hope I've got that right!

I'm going to try this again... I told you how my colors sank and I was ready to give up... I wonder if the % of alcohol on the bottle matters... I think mine says 50%... also . When you make your swirls..do you avoid letting your toothpick touch go all the way through the resin and touch the mold.
@damla0606
@damla0606 5 лет назад
Don't give up because it takes time to get used to it and find out the correct ratios. Regarding the alcohol percentage, it has to be over %98 alcohol. And my toothpick mostly touching the mold while I am making the swirls :)

Yes..thank you. I have been watching so many of these but they all seem to use the White after each color. You didn't...so maybe the White isn't necessary..they say it is to bring the colors to the bottom which actually is the top when it is finished. What is your take on this? Thank you.

@@damla0606 Thank you so much for your very quick reply. I tried again yesterday using your measurements of resin, tint and alcohol, but still failed to get the feathery effect. Once again, the tints just stay on the surface, even after making swirls twice. I think it must be the resin since that is the only thing that I am using that is different from your process. The resin you use is probably thinner (less viscous) allowing the tint to move more freely. I don't know what else to try, so I may have to abandon this procedure, and simply continue to enjoy your wonderful art on Instagram. Thank you for your help.

Have you tried mixing alcohol inks with resin and then adding them to clear resin?

Yes I have tried that too. It turned out classical petri technique. But for feathery effect, this is the way.

Can this be done with alcohol inks and get the same effect without adding the alcohol? How much alcohol do you need to add to thy colored resin?
@damla0606
@damla0606 3 года назад
If you use alcohol inks then it is become a regular petri with swirls. I am adding a fully squirt into the ice cube tray with eye ball. But I may say, 1 part resin + 3-4 drops tint + 1/2 part alcohol

@@damla0606 so you can't add pigment to Alcohol ink and get feather effect, it has to be acrylic paint mixed with 91% Alcohol? Btw, is pigment paint different from acrylic or acrylic pouring paint?
