Was lucky enough to be invited down to SBR ( Matt Stone Racing )and seen that championship winning car. The work gone into it is be on belief. The hole place (MSR ) is like a time capsule with so much stuff from the years gone by. Will be great to her her when she travels back to NZ with the Enforcer . Great work boys. 👌

Huge respect for Ross and Jimmy, ex Bruce McLaren engineers then Ross raced the Cuda F5000 the boy's designed and built and on to V8 SBR. Ross the most diplomatic man I have got to know. Jimmy and his test engine bed, delivered on the limit power plants. Too grate Gentlemen.

Seven part Doco ;- www.nzonscreen.com/title/trio-at-the-top-2001, Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme, and Chris Amon. The trio topped podiums in the sport's 'golden age'. The Team McLaren racing team that four times Grand Prix winner Bruce McLaren founded in 1966, has been the most successful in Formula One. That same year McLaren and Amon teamed up to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and in 1967 Hulme was Formula One world champion & McLaren CanAm champ.

How awesome was it that the car’s resembled more of the falcon and commodore and were so close in speed. This was the best time in v8 supercars I believe.

Can't describe just how great this is, the show is on another level that cannot be matched and the Stone brothers are such gems. Seeing these cars again with much more relatable factory looks and actual parts makes more sense. Such a quality build, thanks heaps for organising and spending the time and money bringing out this awesome content. I'd pay good money to see this doing some laps again. Legend

Best era of V8SC. Russ you were the real deal and a genuine character. The Stone Brothers were a class act. Glad I was around it all back then. Progress is progress I suppose but there is just no personality in current V8SC. Anyway top video.

Fantastic episode, great to be able to follow the faithful restoration of this historic car. It’s brilliant that not only Stone Brothers kept these cars but are the ones to undertake the rebuilds, there can be no one better for the task than the original architects! If I win the lottery I’ll be on the phone with cheque book in hand! 😁

From memory the end of the 2005 series was when I stopped watching but I remember the poo storm after Russell did the victory burnout and it still makes me smile today. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing, fond memories of back in the day. Maybe Muscle Car Masters should run a class for these old girls, the last of the proper production car based V8's.

He didn't really, but I would be deadset riding flying one of those mad max birdman backyard handglider planes with the victa lawnmower engine over the border if it was on offer lol

@dons1932 3 года назад
You say that, but yet 90% of this would bolt straight into a current chassis. They really aren't THAT different. Oil tank in the front as per rules, transaxle instead of solid axle Watts. That's literally it. End differences. The crossmembers are still fabricated, the bellhousings are fabricated, coolers are free, exhausts are free. Same same.
@markhowells13
@markhowells13 3 года назад
Did you see how highly customised this car was ? how much engineering development went into it ?
@dons1932
@dons1932 3 года назад
@@markhowells13 There is no less customization on a modern COTF car than this. Don't get me wrong, I think it's impressive. I love that stuff. But it's the truth. Teams still make their own bellhousings, their own sumps to mount the engine, their own exhausts. It's nothing wildly different. If anything, as proven, it's just a waste more time and money here - such as adding in so much more extra rollcage to the floor to brace the flimsy pressed steel OEM body. It is also that same engineering development you're drooling over, that ultimately killed the sport to where we are now. Teams spending tens of millions on engines and uprights are why we had to introduce parity rules. Cool as this car is, it wasn't sustainable in the slightest.

So, The Stone Brothers were big on innovation. Was there a point where expenses and cost of development started to get out of control? Things like the rear diff and watts link were becoming extremely fancy and complex by 2012 so much so I remember reading somewhere that the rear end assembly was costing close to $60,000 factoring in labour and machining expenses. We've all heard where COTF went wrong in terms of cost savings (certain parts were left free for development). Do you think COTF failed as a complete platform? I'm just curious because you guys talk about the good old days (project blueprint) but was it sustainable? and how much more development do you rekon those cars had left in them before they were all but tapped out?
@dons1932
@dons1932 3 года назад
The infamous harbour bridge rear-end that 888 made was 100k. HRT had a very similar design also. Many diffs were dry sumped, too, which would have given probably near negligble gains but prevented the axles turning in oil. People forget this is why COTF was brought in and now again we have changes. Because costs were getting insane. The OG Perkins double wishbone front-end for example, which the Fords had always ran, was an 80k upgrade back THEN. Just as silly pricing as things are now, except there's LESS money flowing into the sport to be able to justify it. This is what I don't understand. It's easy for Russ and Paul to whinge about Supercars and that 'the punter in the stand doesn't care', yet he's happy to sit here and sprog over all of this custom fabrication work that cost a mint, which allowed him and his team to win, but that he also claims average punters apparently don't care about. The most dangerous thing about cost effective control parts is that you take the race away from engineers and those with great minds. They should be able to compete and have input into cars, too.

Im really confused about Russ's views. He idolises cars like this , with huge amounts of custom engineering development, in the glory days of big budgets (which we don't have now), but then complains about modern cars with much less money intensive builds and far more standardised parts. Looking at that car, adjusted for inflation (the important part) ... im not at all convinced it is cheaper to build and run in real dollar terms.
