The folks with Patriot Mowing donated Federal 209A primer and I found some Federal 209MZ primer...So lets compare to two and see how they stack up to the rest of the other primers that we tested. Enjoy!!!

That’s wild! I never would’ve guessed that the primer would have an impact on your group size at all, let alone that big of one. I would have thought that the powder charge and/or bullet selection would be the determining factor depending upon which variable you are testing, but I never would guess primers… 😅

I thought the same thing before these test. Some of the subscribers kept asking what primer I was using. I went into the test a little to prove that it didn't matter. Yeah I was wrong. But the powder charge is the main factor. That's why I weight my charges to make sure they are as accurate as possible. Thank you for watching.

Thanks for keeping us updated with the primer differences, and yes they are hard to find the better ones that is.

It’s my pleasure. It seems the “muzzleloader only” primer are slower but they are still go enough at most muzzleloader distances. Thanks for hanging with us.

I just got a CVA Optima V2 .50 cal. Using a weighed 70 grain charge of Blackhorn 209, a 295 grain Powerbelt Aerotip, and a Federal 209A primer, I got one raggedy hole at 100 yards.

“One Raggedly hole”. I assume that means they are all touching? That’s freaking awesome!!! Have you got a chance to hunt with it yet?

Not yet, but I hope to introduce one of our WNY whitetails to it this year. And, yes; all the holes were touching. The rifle wears a 3-9x Leupold Ultimate Slam slug and muzzleloader scope that I took off of another gun.

Glad to see that 209a primers had a pretty decent difference from the 209m. If you shoot BH209 it’s probably worth having both and comparing them for your desired bullet and charge before you start testing different charges that will be slower than you want if you go lower or kick harder than you like if you go higher. Spend $10 more up front and save money and time on the backend with potentially less load development.

That’s quite a difference in shot group for sure. Only ones I’ve been able to find are the Cheddite primers. Luckily they’re working fairly well with my setup.
@suburbanhunt3653
@suburbanhunt3653 Год назад
With the exception of the one in the BH209 video, Cheddite has working well during my test. One of the best. They actually had faster FPS then the CCImag primers. I honestly think the one that misfired was a one off. Didn’t have a problem before or since

Have you tried priming your muzzle loader with a bit of real black powder? I've only done this with 777 pellets but my buddy used that method with a granular substitute (100gr Pyrodex I think) and it works great for eliminating that slight hangfire you get when it's 40 degrees below zero up in MN, he claims there's noticeably more recoil for him and better accuracy, but I didn't notice any big difference in either department. I use 3 50 grain 777 pellets over about 10 grains of FF black powder, no more "click........Boom".
@suburbanhunt3653
@suburbanhunt3653 11 дней назад
No I haven’t thought of that. To be clear how much black powder and by what measure? Adding black powder to 150gn of 777 pellets… I would be concerned about over pressuring the rifle. Have you seen any signs of that? Also how consistent are your velocities? Let me know and will do my own research. Might could put this idea to the test.
@harrypeterson9287
@harrypeterson9287 11 дней назад
@@suburbanhunt3653 I use a 10 grain spoonful of Swiss FF powder followed by the three 50 grain 777 pellets and a 290gr Hornady FTX in a CVA Wolf. I have a chronograph but it rarely works right, I never ran it over the chrono. For me the recoil, point of impact at 100 yards and everything else seems the same, just no more hangfires when it's really cold. I texted my buddy, turns out he uses Blackhorn 209 powder and Powerbelts, not sure about what they weigh. He claims they're a bit harder on the shoulder and group a little higher and tighter for him. That would indicate a potential pressure spike with the recoil. No sign of any earth shattering kaboom for me. The primers look normal at least.

Congratulations on stepping into the world of Muzzleloading. What did you go with, rifle wise? There are hundreds of combos to use out there and I dare say that 95% will get the job done. In the description I have a link for all of my groups that might help you get started. Just hit the range and know what your rifle will do with that load and you are go to go. I wish the best luck in the hunting woods. Thank you for watching.

I heard that the MZ were designed to reduce the crud ring with pellets. Can't say if that works or not but they lit several shots of 777 pellets just fine. Still would prefer 209A as a 'Hotter' hunting primer just in case. For hunting I actually use an empty .22 shell as a powder measure for Goex FFG black powder and put that in before the pellet charge as insurance the shot goes off. Safe ? No idea ! But I also never had a misfire either.

A 22 LR case? Just picturing that in my mind it seems like that would be a rather small amount of powder. What Volume or Weight measurement does that provide? A 22LR case would be a lot more convenient to carry. That’s awesome. Thanks for watching

I just harvested one of my biggest buck to date with that exact load!! Big buck. The hide was so thick the projectile didn’t past through after hitting a rib. The entry hole was large enough to produce a great blood to follow. I can only image how it would have been if it missed the bone and had complete pass through. The new 340gr ELD-X however drop a doe in track. The exit was quit impressive. Stay tuned for those video in the coming weeks. Thank you for watching.

I can understand how and why the primer makes a difference with the loose powder, Blackhorn 209, Triple 7 etc. but what about with Triple 7 pellets? Do you think the primer would make that much difference?
@suburbanhunt3653

Absolutely. It’s harder to tell due to the varying weights of the pellets adding it own inconsistency.
