Every landing to the media is "Hard" and will say that "With only 2 thousand feet remaining" which is still a lot for a runway of 12 thousand feet more.

Last time I flew on the landing was rougher with all working landing gear.

Gear malfunctioned, it was like that at landing. Never collapsed

Sparks as soon as the mains touched down. Starboard main gear was down and locked, nose gear ditto, portside gear didn't do what it's supposed to. Down but not locked, maybe? I was in an Airbus that had a landing gear caution light up on approach to O'Hare many years ago. Nose gear on that plane rotates 90 degrees after it extends, then locks down. Pilots and tower couldn't figure out at what point it had failed, so we got to burn off fuel for a while, then made the softest, gentlest landing I've ever felt. Except for the engines shutting down out just before the nose gear touched (on purpose, but eerie). Turned out it had extended fully and locked, but the nose gear steering had failed. So we got a tow to the terminal.

@@christopherreed4723 The sparks are from the gear door - if you rewatch right as the plane becomes unobstructed by the building, you can see the corner of the door start throwing sparks, followed by the engine nacelle

The left landing gear didn't collapse. It never extended in the first place. I can see how you would make that mistake, though, since the pilot used the lift on the wings to keep the plane level until the left-wing stalled due to the braking. Sucks to lose that engine, though.

Rope ?

The evacuation rope sucks, its a poor attempt at giving pilots an escape route other than the door. In this case I would have used the door & slide, unless there was something wrong inside (smoke?).

Shadow 133 someone said that these cargo aircraft don’t have slides, not sure if this is true or not though

Horizon301 Im not sure, but I think that’s required based on the door height and not type of cargo carried. It would suck if that’s true, and the very least they could do is add a decent rope ladder at the door for cases like this. Evacuations are more common than people think.

Unfortunately, that plane is gonna spend the next week MINIMUM having everything in that wing inspected. Up to and including the wing mounts. New engine. (Current one will be overhauled) Engine mounts likely will be changed. Left main landing gear struts are probably perfectly fine.

@@davecrupel2817 We had a 767 do the same thing years ago (mid 90's). Did a pylon drop and NDT'd everything. Engine went to the OH shop. The entire accessory drive was toast as was the cowling. As I remember, there wasn't any damage to the pylon area. Put it back together with new hardware. Took a little over 2 weeks.

But my time with the big boys will come. :) Whereabouts is the accessory section on a typical turbofan? (Or sections) The only turbine experience i do have is with PT6s. And that accessory section is at the "front" of the engine. (Rear from pilot's POV)

@@davecrupel2817 Yep! I was a little off on the date. It was in '87. We did a full pylon drop on it. Crawled inside the tanks and NDT'd everything. I think there was some minor leading edge and flap damage too. Boeing built it right. It may have been over 2 weeks, can't remember for sure. They actually hung another engine on it and ferried it from Scott AFB, IL across Missouri to the MCI overhaul base. I was part of a dedicated crew working on it. It was a 3 shift round the clock. Amazingly little damage. It looked a lot worse than it was. Here is the report on it: aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19870822-0 BTW, it wasn't near as bad as when we had a towing Oh S**t! and tore the nosegear out of a different 767 halfway into the hangar. That was a trainwreck! We had to completely gut the fwd E&E compartment and restructure the entire gearwell aft bulkhead and lower fuselage behind the nose gearwell. Replaced a lot of former rings. That took almost 2 months! There was hell to pay on that one!

Looks like the rope slide malfunctioned and did not hold him back and he basically took a dive into the tarmac. He has some broken bones for sure. They did a great job. My brother is a pilot for fed ex.

Yup, it sucks but they panicked from smoke and fire alarms. Pretty sure they were imagining a fireball and all hell breaking loose outside, but they did an amazing job preventing just that.

The thrust blowing the sparks back gives ya the impression it’s going faster than it is.

They stopped at American terminal 5 which is halfway down 25R. They still had roughly 6,000 feet of runway left. Pilots did a great job. Just a bummer the pilot didn’t have a firm grasp of the escape rope.

Panic I guess. Probably the co-pilot. The captain waited for the stairs.

The pilots reported that the left landing gear did not come down. When doing an emergency landing with a gear failure, you’re definitely going to do some damage to the engine. The fuel is stored in the wings. The pilot probably didn’t know if there was damage to the fuel tanks that could start a fire so it’s best to evacuate as quickly as possible

You never know, that think can just explode. That's why fire trucks were staying back a little and making sure that there was no issues. Always better to be safe than sorry.

They won't follow because they don't know what will happen until it stops. That's why they have staging areas.

Don't agree. They were there fast. You could see them as the plane was landing but they have to wait till it stops moving as you never know what it might do.

most likely that was the captain, as he would be sitting in the left hand seat. looks like the co-pilot waited for the stairs/ramp to be driven out to the plane.

@@tymcfadden8496 It looked to me like the emergency escape ladder went out of the far side of the plane on the film, which would make sense as it['s usually behind the co-pilot's seat and part of their emergency drill to deploy it. It also looked like the crew member who fell went out of the far side of the plane, hence why I said co-pilot. The co-pilot would deploy the emergency ladder while the pilot shuts down and secures the aircraft...

There is an escape rope above each pilots seat in a small compartment. I don't think any Capt I know would egress first before everyone is out of the airplane. The average age of a major airline pilot is about 50. No easy feat to go down the rope. High potential for injury.

Yes, there could have been stairs, but sparks flying from a cargo aircraft aren't exactly considered safe. It could have been carrying hazardous cargo that serves a fire risk too, like Li-ion batteries...

They picked up the rest of the crew with the cherry picker. The one who came down the rope looked to have damaged his ankle. The guys did a great job. A really minimum speed touchdown.

@@TrFusion Potential misjudgment? Perhaps. But at that moment that appeared to be the best choice for the FO and therefore it is irrefutable. Will this be looked into for a future scenario? Yes. But is it right to accuse the crew of misjudgment in a perfect landing? I disagree.

@@quantifygg Other comments here state that there are no slides on this aircraft, being cargo specific. Rope hatch said to be underneath which I agree would have been not much good if the whole fuselage was on the tarmac. Here there appeared to be one out of the cabin windows but they are very small. We need a pilot here to clarify things
