A new version of the Fedora Linux distribution has just been released. Fedora 28 uses Linux Kernel 4.16.3 and includes some popular third-party software repositories. Now, when you launch GNOME Software the first time, you can enable third-party repositories including Google Chrome, PyCharm, NVIDIA’s proprietary graphics drivers, and Stream.

The biggest thing this time for the Fedora release is that the devs actually delivered it on time! That is unheard of in Fedora world! I give a lot of props to Fedora folks for that alone! And as always, the 28 is excellent in all aspects! Thanks a lot for the video, Gary!

I used to use Redhat starting in the late 90's up to maybe the mid-2000s when I started looking at other distributions. I really love how easy it is today to find and install apps. It used to be a real challenge back in the day. Working out the dependencies, visiting RPM repositories that had little actual information. I'm glad it's mostly sorted. Have been using various Debian distros lately, will give this a try. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the great video. I use to use fedora in the past. After seeing this video I think I may give it a go again.

While their recommended download method is through the Media Writer, that does download live images which are fine for if you want to try it out on a physical system before installing it, but it does limit the user to a single software package from what I can tell. Instead, what I do is to use VirtualBox, load the "netinstall" image, which boots directly into the installer (like what the installation media for Red Hat Enterprise Linux does), and allows me to select which groups of packages to install, just like in the old "Red Hat Linux", but with 2 columns instead of 1. This way, I can basically combine the regular Workstation release or a Spin, with one or more Labs packages. *Yeah, you get way more installation options on the "netinstall", rather than the live images.* Heck, I think I read somewhere that an argument can be added at the boot menu for the netinstall, in order to enable initialisation of the RHEL "Kdump" feature on Fedora. I use VirtualBox so that I can test the software setup before installing it onto my actual system, and I've already been doing that to test Debian software setups (that distro recommends the use of the netinstall, but still offers live images). For GTK-based desktop environments outside of GNOME, there is a package management utility by the name of "dnfdragora", which itself does resemble the old Mandriva RPMDrake, so it could be possible that it was forked from that. Before anyone asks, I didn't use the regular Workstation release, but the MATE spin.

I like this video than the Ubuntu video because you walk us through the process of installation. Keep up the good work Prof. Thank you

fedora 28 is very good. Love the third party repo config in the software installer and the user and password form after the finish installation not during installation

Nice short video Gary. 👍 I'm thinking of getting new distro either fedora or opensuse. I'm not a techie or power user. Is fedora good for me? Among these two which is easy to install, use, secure, stable? I hate gnome which is sole reason I left Ubuntu after 5 years & now use Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon. If I choose between these two, I'll get cinnamon or KDE. Which is good DE according to you? I also read that right click from laptop doesn't work on fedora 28. Is it true? I'm concerned because I never use a mouse with my laptop. Where can I find basic dnf command for fedora? Please help. Thanks

What do you mean by Unix? You mean something like FreeBSD or something from a big enterprise company like HP (i.e. HP-UX) or both?

well that's like saying "is ios better than ios 9 ?"
@Randomizer92mx

Well Unix is not used anywhere else than servers compared to Linux which is also used on home computers. Linux is based off Unix and I believe it's friendlier to home computer users than standard Unix.

I was wanting to give Linux a shot for a long time, and I'm getting more and more confident about the switch, I'm just a bit confused about the Linux "flavours" like kde, gnome, xfa, etc... What is the difference between them? And is there a reason to pick one over the other?

Did you see this video on mine? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JyoU7qSCfYc.html
@ragilmalik
@ragilmalik 6 лет назад
what you are referring as flavours is actually DE or desktop environment. if you want to give GNU/linux a try, do ubuntu. it is the easiest to install and operate. DE will handle the looks of your system, mainly. they come with some default applications if you want it to. don't worry switching between one another is an easy job. i recommend downloading the last ubuntu 18.04 which comes with GNOME DE, which is the most used DE. that way if you need help, gnome and ubuntu have the highest percentage of available help.

@@GaryExplains In my last question, just down, I had asked whether I should opt for Fedora or OpenSuse & some other doubts. My questions may be basic being a non tech, I ask for clarification on those. This helps me in going ahead with that issue. Thanks & apologies if I've offended you. Your videos are really good on presentation, clarity.
@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 6 лет назад
Ah, I see... No, tech/non-tech isn't the issue, the problem is the question itself. There is no way I can tell you which is better for you. I know nothing about your workflow, what you are trying to achieve, what you like/dislike, what sort of PC you have, what experience you have with one system vs the other. There is no way I could answer in an objective and helpful manner. Just in the same way that if I asked you what should I have in my sandwich, chicken or tuna? How you would know what I want/need/like. I am not trying to be awkward, just truthful.

@@GaryExplains I use Acer 4736z laptop with Intel T4400 processor, 3 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD (it's 2009/10 vintage). I use my current OS Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon for general usage & plan to relearn C/C++, Fortran again which I studied in college. I wish to use a good solid distro just out of curiosity as how an original distro works. Now Fedora, OpenSuse are solid, stable, secure than many (I am told so). The terminal commands, file management, method to connect & transfer data between laptop & Android phone etc are different. I read that in fedora 28, right click on touchpad doesn't work (not verified) which concerns as I don't use external mouse. If I get more ideas, info before I start, that'll help. If you advice fedora, I'll search for basic dnf commands etc. Thank you ☺️

@ragilmalik
@ragilmalik 6 лет назад
with ubuntu, yoh have higher chance of getting help in case of problems. with fedora, you are under the belt of RHEL and its mature software. so expect less problem plus every RHEL product is a server grade product. conparable to debian but way out of ubuntu's league
@trevinbeattie4888
@trevinbeattie4888 6 лет назад
For developers and system administrators, it's a matter of preference or familiarity; Fedora is part of the Red Hat family of distributions and Ubuntu is based on Debian, and each of these have some differences in package management, configuration data, and other internals. Most of these differences don't have any impact at the user level. Both of them use the same Linux kernel at their core, and most Gnome & KDE applications are available for both distributions.
