Federal authorities have handed down charges Friday against six men they said faked robberies in a scheme to obtain special immigration visas reserved for crime victims. CBS 2 Investigator Megan Hickey reports.

When I saw the story last week of a liquor store that was robbed of $10,000 after having been robbed a couple times before, I knew it sounded fishy. Store never have that much money not locked in a safe. I guess they thought they were getting away with something and kept doing the same thing.

I worked in immigration and did U-visas and often wondered whether this was the case. You only meet the client, and just hear their side of the story and it's your job to accept it at face value unless you see really obvious proof of a lie or mistake. But when their story is just a little implausible we basically have to be believe it. Especially when they substantiate it with a police report. Did all the fake victims here agree to get SHOT though? I agree that a violent crime has better odds of winning a U visa but wow that's dedication if you agree to get shot!

How many children living with immigrant parents are in low-income families? Regardless of nativity, 24.5 million children under 18 lived in families with incomes below 200 percent of the federal poverty threshold in 2022 (amounting to $59,400 for a family of four with two children). Of them, 7.4 million (or 30 percent) had one or more foreign-born parent. Of the 17.6 million children of immigrants, 42 percent were in low-income families, a higher rate than for children of U.S.-born parents (33 percent of 51 million).
