I got to go on a couple of fires as part of a hand crew for the USFS in the mid-'90s. Our accommodations ranged from the floor of chicken barn at a county fairgrounds, to a nice hotel with a pool in Salt Lake City while waiting to be deployed into Idaho. My favorite was definitely the traditional fire camp, though much smaller than the one you showed. Those fires were the hardest but best work I've ever done in my 62 years.
Cops, fire fighters, some construction workers, it's all government and all social programs, the right has brain washed people to automatically think socialism is bad. We need to take care of are fellow man and the Earth with scary socialism
I will say, firefighting (especially wildland) is one of the #1 things I'd say is okay to be local or national government assisted. Not something easily done by the common man.
Assuming they're competent and get the job done, I know, unfortunately, often a big assumption, I have no problem with it. As others have said, the government can and does have legitimate functions. Also, at this point, the Feds and government are also going to do some things whether you like it or not. At least in some cases, it's better to acquiesce and have some influence on things rather than be stuck on the outside, shaking your fist.
Very interesting to see for a German volunteer firefighter living in a small village in a rural area in Germany. The scale & professionalism of how a serious wildfire is handled in your nation is impressive!
Just to give you a perspective, Germany is 1:28 the size of USA. Germany's largest forest, the Black Forest, is 6,009 square km and USA's largest (not counting Alaska's Tongass 67,700 sq km) Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is 25,500 sq km. Altogether we have roughly 50 National Forests larger than the Black Forest.
I’ve never even considered what happens behind the scenes of a fire. Thank you for the perspective. There’s some similarities between this and being in the field or deployed while in the army between the trailers used as a kitchen, the mess tent, or the latrine stations.
I seen a fire encampment last summer up on mt Rainer. It was smaller than this but impressive. I am trained on HSIRM (Hazardous spill incident response management). Knew what that Devon station was as soon as I seen it!
The fire service, including the Forest Service/BLM, are militaristic and disciplined organizations. The Incident Command System was derived from the military for expansive operations.
@@cliffterrell4876 that makes total sense and why try to reinvent the wheel when organizing and deploying to an area of operation where you need to maintain command and control. This has brought me a lot of new perspective thanks everyone for the insight.
Hello. I work in California as a captain on a type 3 Engine for the FS. Im very familiar with fire camp. I can write a book on this video but you did a great job explaining. I’ve been a subscriber for a long time and appreciate ALL your videos and shorts. The ICS system can mobilize anywhere faster the the nation guard. Stay safe.
We're in the NC mountains and had a large forest fire near us last year. It got close to us. The feds came with helicopters and jet tankers. Made all the difference.
Get well soon Cody, I absolutely love stuff like this it’s a goal and dream of mine to be a sawyer for a contracted engine module company in a near by city. Thank you for all the work you’ve done in Wildland fires and thanks to your son Jack for following in your footsteps for this job
Great walkthrough of the organization and tools necessary to support this large scale operation! thank you for sharing and always looking forward to your content
Oh interesting I’m a machinist and one of the machines I run is a Doosan. Had no clue they made equipment such as what you featured here. Very cool! It’s like when I realized that Brother made CNC machines and not just printers and alike. Also, as someone who works at night, I can appreciate how they take care of the night workers. Thanks so much for everything!
Having flashbacks of the Paradise CA fire cleanup. Please take care of your lungs while working. Officials in Paradise gave zero advice on this. Us tree crews were covered in soot head to toe daily. 16 hour days , 13 on and 1 of. Repeat. These guys are heroes. Seriously protect your lungs. I can't even go outside anymore.... God Bless all these heroes.
Never knew the "behind the scene" of this. Thank you and please share more. ....Also, hopefully your injuries heal fast. May the Father continue to watch over and bless you and your house. Shabbat Shalom
Thank you for posting this segment. I appreciate the amount of detail and effort you did to create this presentation. I worked the 2003 Witch Creek Fire L.E. I.C.P. in San Diego County. So I can appreciate your contribution for the critical incident. And, God's speed for a fast recovery.
Processor. It can fall, bunch, and load, but pretty much stays on the landing for limbing, cutting to length, and sorting. The orange Doosan is a "shovel", log loader. That truck and trailer is a "super train". Long logger + pup trailer.
In fire prone counties, people owing acres of ranch land need zoning requirements to keep least 50x50’ rain reservoir solar pump circulating fish ponds that property owner can drain from w/ gas powered pressure washers pumping sprinklers. I’d also dig 8x8’ underground safe rooms for last measures. nice dozers.
Wow, hope you and your family stay safe. We have had wildfires threaten our community as well, so I feel for you. I am glad the Feds are coming in with resources to help protect your community! It’s great to see when government works and is there to help people. Keep your family safe.
Thank you for the update, Cody. Very neat seeing some of the gear out there not on the fire, yet. I saw one of those DNR box truck things in my city a few weeks ago; must be a new piece of kit. I don't have the same kind of training those guys get, but have something "parallel" to it called HAZWOPER (got my 40 hr, there are different hour levels), which stands for Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response, where they discussed Incident Command and how it's implemented on an event.
Great video, the buildup of support is amazing and the technology and support system is extraordinary. Be safe and prayers for safety for all involved.
THey did this in Central Texas several years ago. We had full time firefighters and volunteer firefighters from all over the state working on their days off. Feds came in and sent everyone away, allowing the fire to get worse and burn several hundred houses, before they got control of it.
Fed's are in on it, but i guess that most Americans already forgot what happend in Hawaii. All the missing children, scholl was closed that day, water was cut off, cut branches on the ground, no follow up reports, houses of celebs and politicians weren't burned, and now big companies like BlackRock buying all the land... nothing to see there.
Ponsse Harvester. Top of the line forest machines. It’s the standard in the forest industry in Scandinavia. A Harvester together with a Forwarder is how we roll over here.
I live in France but my prayer goes to all that are willing to give there heart and soul into fighting the danger and who are always ready to land a hand to people in the need of one
It's astonishing what resources and organization is possible when competent Government does what Government SHOULD be doing for the Greater Good; logistics, communication, mobilization ...even training.
Thanks Cody. Sent your vid to my daughter who was a wild-land firefighter, years ago. I was allowed to come into the camp and visit, (doubt that occurs often ) and she was able to give us a tour of the camp like you were able by foot. These camps are VERY Impressive. She had come off the fire and gave us a tour including a meal which is extremely impressive the meals that are made. The food was plentiful and yes, steaks.. Very well run “ city” and very professional units personnel. Very , very impressive. Thank you for the tour. Keeping these men and women in my prayers. and the Local population too. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾💕💕💕.
West Coast firefighters buy T shirts displaying their conquests. East Coast firefighters GIVE shirts/pants/blankets/food/money for hotel room when displaced to the victims. I did it for 10 years. You stay classy Left Coast!
The fuel trucks are available to everyone assigned to the fire. Agency personell and equipment just pull up and get what they need. Contract resources like engines and tenders get their fuel, then the cost of the fuel is deducted from their invoice when the resource goes through demob. When they were looking for debri from the Challenger, thwy brought in a lotnof the private contract hand crews from the PNW, since they were uniquely trained and experienced in grid searching.
The main problem I have with the Government is, how can you be in charge of my safety but not responsible for my safety. Talking about police in particular
The government is only supposed to have like 3 basic but highly critical tasks and it usually messes them anyway and causes the exact opposite of intended results
Lmao, if you were an European, you would say "see that? Thats why we take half of everything you make, be happy it's not more, because it should be 80%"
Absolutely excellent content. I’m sure you hear that all the time. I’m from Ontario Canada. This is a great informational video. Thank you very much keep on being you
Thank you for the update, praying for you and your family and all the firefighters and support people, and anybody that is in harms way of the fires,God bless.🙏🏻
I used to love fire camp...always interesting to see other agencies, equipment meet people from out of state. It has change a lot since I retired 2003 in California. Didn't have a need for the the logging equipment but, it would of been fun to watch it cut line. ICP/ firecamp is a well oiled and organized machine with a lot of moving parts. Thanks for sharing and good luck with keeping your home safe
What an incredible deployment of organization, logistics, manpower... bussines. It feels like you guys take some things serious. Yet at the same time, its terrifying goverment power right there, for everyone to see. In a push between independence and state dependence, this situation falls right on dependency side and with good reason, yet all that power if corrupted...
It is an amazing how quickly resources can be brought to bear. During the RAM fire in BC years ago the Fire Comptroller walked into the local Ford dealership and bought EVERY truck in the lot, then went down the street…chainsaws, safety equipment etc. She cleaned out stores in the area. Mounties even conscripted guys from the bar I worked in:)
Man what an amazing feat in logistics. Really cool insight into the world of wildland. Those machines are seriously impressive! God bless and hope the finger heals fast!
