In this video, we have Leon, who has just been getting back into swimming for 6 months and is averaging around 2:00/100m. We will look into a couple of things that he could do to swim faster.

I love how complete and thorough this and such a useful analysis. So many swimmers are at this kind of level: nothing standing out as super wrong but a combination of small things that just drag. And usually this is hard to advise because it's hard to know what to start on but you just go top to bottom then end on emphasis on the paddle - which is what all the other positioning is there to enable. And even a good couple drills and a realistic time-line. This is the video I want to give people asking for swim advise because it's all correct in the right directions. I'm a swim teacher but not a coach I teach basic beginners, safety and lifeguarding. But I'm not a great swimmer myself when it come to technique and I swim very similar to this guy in the example. It's easy to give ore basic instructions for me but when people start asking for the kind of efficiency for long distance speed as you coach I'm not great at running through all the different layers theway you do so masterfully here. Great coaching, thank you!

This is just great ! I am in same situation (2min 10s/100m) and unable to push sub 2 mins All the points mentioned here are some problems which I also do. My takeaway from this is : don't bend knees too much for streamlined body, not losing balance while tilting, taking care of first quadrant, and keep checking how I finish the stroke. I'll take one point at a time and try it out in the pool. This was very helpful. Thanks Coach !

Amazing analysis of all areas areas of freestyle stroke! I'll definitely start implementing this weekend ! ( as an amateur swimmer who swims everyday for fun/fitness and is generally pretty fit, but when swimming gets out of breath very very quickly with free style !)

@@Natalie-rl7dq I can see that. If you flatten out your hand prematurely on the pull, you lose that extra bit of push against the water.

This is somewhat similar to how I swim, and it's really fascinating to see you break it all down. The challenge for me is just to know where to start. I've been swimming like this for so many years that my muscle memory is all wrong. How do I unteach my body to do different things? There are so many parts to what you're saying that it's a bit overwhelming. Also, when I'm in the water, I think I'm doing things correctly, but I don't really know. Sometimes I can tell I'm a little smoother, but then things fall apart as I start to tire. I live in the US and am considering flying to Australia or New Zealand later this year to attend one of your clinics where you film the swimmers and then analyze their stroke. Hopefully that will help me.

This is really useful. Thankyou. Would be great to see a side-by-side compare of Leon's 2:00 (my times are similar and looks like I probably need to make similar corrections) with Andy Donaldson's seemingly effortless 1:12 time. Fitness levels aside, feels like there would be some good tips to be had from comparing both.

Light bulb stroke ,& drill ?! I watched previous episode & i learn it from there
@gerrysecure5874
@gerrysecure5874 Месяц назад
The first 50m I swim effortlessly around 1:50. I have to conciously go sloooow to not go below 2:00. But then I drop 5s every 50m and after 300m I must full gas to stay below 2:15 and gravitate towards 2:30. I "think" I do the same, but there is no way I can keep the body position the same. No drill whatsoever could change that yet. Just staying flat in the water is exhausting after short, and I tried everything from weight to core exercises. In the water I just fall apart after minutes.
@thomasspielhofer3229
@thomasspielhofer3229 Месяц назад
I would advise to work on shorter sets - 100m or max 200m ... but really focus on technique. Too many people just get in the pool and do 1000m and after 300m their technique goes to pot and they're just fighting the water. I also use the pull buoy a lot to really focus on arm technique. So might do 100m normal, 100m with pull buoy, 100m a bit faster, 100m a bit faster with pull buoy etc. and them maybe try a longer set. Doing this made me go from really struggling to get below 2:00/100m to easily swimming below 2:00.

Swim more watch videos less. You want to start feeling the water and your body (really important to not hurt yourself) and don't overthink it. Overthrowing distracts from feeling the movements. It takes a long time and when you start you don't want to worry about the high level finesse because it's not relevant. Try to find a fu way to swim with kids or friends and just go for it without thinking so much for at least a few months. Instead of videos talk to other people in the pool, even the lifeguards. Really, dont look at youtube until later. Months from now.

the reason why he is rotating his shoulders too far might be that, he is not rotating correctly. A lot of people include some sort of extending the lower back while rotating to keep the head completely out of the water, mainly because they are scared of swallowing water or because they cannot rotate at the upperback which is actually what we want. Notice how he is not in rotation when catching water when breathing. His timing is off, probably he is briefing too late.
