these people should read about how to rescue and release a Blue Jay because often they stray, but this one is totally healthy, and able to return to his parents which often are within site of the babies who are still under their care. I have rescued two- the first time I heard the parents, like your Utube actually has them calling out in the background!, and after he was out of threat of our cats, so next for several days, locked up, and his young age, younger than this one, we only waited a day or 2 before we put him back out, and sure enough: they lead him/her back to safety near the nest as often Jays fledge a bit early! Let him go back near where you hear the calling of or sightings of the parents! They will feed them if they are visible and raise them right! Thanks, never keep one.

I have been trying to find info on how to care for fledgeling Jay's for about 40 minutes and most of what I find is recommendations to leave them near where you found them. I live in a neighborhood that is absolutely crawling with cats. So, apparently I should let this poor thing die because it's possible I may not properly care for it? I just want to give it a chance. I've taken in four or five birds, and the only one that died was the one I took to a rescue organization.

No one is answering the question about what to feed this baby bird. Take about 1/4 c of Purina dry cat food, let soak in about 1/2 c of water for an hour or so, pulverize into a mix the consistency of applesauce, and feed from a dropper. The bird will open its mouth nice and wide for the food and you can put the dropper end pretty far in. This stuff dries like glue, so try not to get any on the bird (better to miss his mouth completely) but use a water soaked Q-tip to immediately get it off while it's still wet. Alternatively, you can just soak the cat food and feed him the soft pieces (no bigger than a pea). The key is not to feed them much (they'll let you know when they're done) but feed them every 20 min or so from sunrise to sunset. They will sleep all night. I have begun to feed my guy teeny tiny pieces of fruit, there's no chewing, it just goes right down the gullet, which is why they have to be really tiny. I see the guy in this video gave his bird water. Adult birds don't bring water to the nest, the water comes in the moist food they feed their young. You can drown a bird with too much water. And definitely NO MILK. These are not mammals.

The parents are likely nearby. And those missing feathers are likely from a cat attack (tell-tale sign). He was t pushed out of the nest... that’s really not what they do, but they will fledge prematurely if they are disturbed, such as a predator or human bothering the nest. In this case a rehabber should have been contacted so the bird can get a thorough examination, be fed properly, and kept until those flight feathers grow in.

I raised a blue jay from a small chick when I was a teen, I named it kevlar because it fell out of a tall tree during a storm and came out just fine, it was a lot younger than this one, I fed it with a eyedropper. After he was a full grown beautiful male kevlar would come back and sit on a low branch and let me feed him bread from time to time.

Baby jays like this one with the blue feathers on its wings and most of its pin feathers replaced with adult feathers are fledglings and are learning to fly. If the parents are nearby and there aren't any neighborhood cats, crows, mean dogs or other predators then leave the jays alone. Give the parents at least 1-2 hours to show, watch from a distance, preferably through a window. If there are nearby predators and/or the parents are never seen then you can make the attempt to take care of them, but do MASSIVE amounts of research! There is a large range of needs for birds of different species at different ages, from food to shelter. Contrary to popular belief they don't survive off of bread or worms, most baby or young birds have a much more complicated diet than that and typically need large amounts of certain proteins and vitamins.
@Debbiesnc
@Debbiesnc 8 лет назад
+Highlander I like your answer but will ad here the parents are waiting now for the one who flew into our glass door, went into shock during a cold winter storm, so have read up and don't feed them for 24 hours, they need a quiet, clean lined with soft cloth box and warmth, not a heating pad either just unless you place a wrapped one, beneath the BOX on one end so it does not burn them. I did release once successfully and the parents came right down, after 2 days....kept my cats inside for a week! You can't decide if they are injured, parents will, or call wildlife control helpers!

That is the worst thing you can do. Fledgling Jays need to be left alone unless you absolutely don't see their parents around. They are learning to fly, and their parents will come and feed them and will protect them.

Thank goodness we disn't do as you suggest and left it alone

The worst of the predators are NOT cats but crows & raptors!!! Th OP is an asshat. I saved a baby jay from a crow & hawk fighting over it & even though the parents chased me, I am proud to announce that he is now living in my yard with his parents coming to check on him & have fed him twice. I've been feeding him & put him in my greenhouse over night & return him to the trees/bushes in the morning. Helping a baby bird is a noble thing & not an easy undertaking. The wildlife center I often bring critters & birds to is currently overwhelmed & considering I have experience hand raising birds, they gave me tips & "recipes" to make foods for him. Thanks to people who care for Nature's children... :)

The Jay I found in my driveway made it to a high branch of a bush. There is deffinalty a difference between finding a fledgling who is learning to fly, and finding a nestling who has fallen. The one in my driveway did draw the attention of Crows, but the parent were fierce in defending it. Once it made it into the bush, all the ruckus stopped

How'd he do? Did he ever learn to feed himself on his own. We're trying to get one to eat on his own but he's in love with humans now and won't leave although he can fly quite well. Loves dog food too but giving worms, bugs, fruit, nuts and acorns is what he really needs the most.

Don't feed blue jays worms. Only Robins can tolerate the parasites in them. It's better to feed baby jays small pieces of fruits and vegetables, and maybe some small pieces of moist cat food. Or even better, take the bird to a center that cares for abandoned and injured animals.

you shouldn't baby him, he will never survive in the wild, we hand one just like that expect both his wings where short, we feed him at took care of him, he would hop around, we feed him peanuts, pieces of bread, he loved potatoes. he found a home under the tiny hole under my shed that I had no access to, even the neighbourhood cats couldn't get at him, then winter hit and figured him for dead, he came back the following year, he could fly but he was a bit of a clutz...now after 4 years of having him he has a beautiful wingspan, little blue fohawk that pops up when we call him to eat. He even has his own family now.

I LOVE this story, so beautiful. Thank you for taking such good care, whilst letting a bird be a bird and fly free. We humans always want to put our stamp on everything from an ego perspective! Animals are our equals and we all take care of EACHOTHER, whilst letting each other BE! It seems he thanks you for this 'heartfelt' perspective.

Birds (like other animals) have a thing called instinct... believe me the bird would of act naturally to its environment. If I find baby birds I just let the bird/animal rescue take care of them as they are trained... they then (when the bird is able) let them go free.

According to the Migratory Bird Act, it is illegal to even temporarily hold on to that fledgling blue jay, your supposed to call Federal wild life officials. There are not enough resources to back up the Migratory Bird Act for Federal wild life officials to visit every single house where a baby bird fell down as almost all commonly found birds are illegal to own as pets or rehabilitate. This extreme law should be amended to allow people to own captured birds as pets with a permit.

Keeping it will shorten its lifespan. It is also illegal. Humans cannot teach birds the lessens they need to learn as fledglings. The mother will return for it. Birds do not recognize their babies based on smell. Birds have to eat a specific amount and much more often that we think. At certain ages, it is every 15-20 minutes! Put the bird in the nest if it cannot fly a little or hop. Put it on a tree branch off the ground if it can. Bringing it into your home is selfish and does the bird harm.

yes, I have two cats, I kept them inside when I knew there was a fledgling out in my yard. I've also witnessed Blue Jay's fiercely protecting their fledglings from Crows and even cats. Trust me, in the the hour after a fledgling ends up on the ground, there is a huge ruckus while everyone gets interested, but once the fledgling makes it to a bush so they can climb back into a tree, everything calms down. We humans usually find them in that short time frame because such a ruckus is going on, and we think it's an urgent situation. But if the parents are there, and they Will let you know they are! Let them do their job! Let's say you are teaching your kid to ride a bike, and they fall, and your neighbor comes out and grabs them, drags them inside, and you don't get to see them again, your kid ends up in a cage, force-fed huge chunks of meat which are forced down with a tube, or a wash of water to force them down. I'm just trying to show you a little common sense from experience with fledglings. Do they all make it? No, can you interfere if the bird is abandon or injured? Yes, but when you see a baby bird, stop and observe before you rush to fix it. Most of the time you'll find it didn't need fixing G to begin with.

Sometimes they fall out or get kicked out way too soon and into a yard with dogs, cats, lawnmowers etc. With no bush to climb up and no ability to climb it... right before a downpour

You should keep your cats inside all year. They kill all kinds of animals.

I just found a fledgling blue jay. It had been knocked to the ground during a bad storm. When they are this big, they no longer stay in a nest. It is too dangerous. Predators raid the nests. So, the mother helps them find a safe place for the night - all in separate areas. She travels back and forth and keeps an eye and teaches them. If you find one, you should put it right back in the tree it fell from, off the ground, but near where the mom can find it. DO NOT BRING IT IN TO CARE FOR IT.

We just found one that fell outside my friend's house. I don't really know how to take care of it, but the parents are up in the tree above calling. It's such a pretty bird.

@@roset3040 Baby birds shouldn't eat seed straight up. As nestlings and fledgelings, they eat their mom's vomit - gross as it sounds - so you can use wet cat foid or mashed bugs and berries to feed them. Make sure they have lots of water in the mix, and feed them with a spoon or eyedropper. As they get older, introduce them to larger, solid foods and see if they eat them alone, without help.

Only wildlife rehab centers and trained rehabilitators should feed baby birds. This is just interfering in the worst way. Bird is probably terrified. You can tell they just want a pet "we'll get you a bigger cage". Ugh.

I've got a baby the cat got and I just happened to catch the cat. I'm smitten with the little thing. What are you/did you feed it? I'm feeding my cat food mixed with yogurt and baby food and canilope every once in awhile. I am also giving it a piece of dog calcuim tablets every day. Mine is way younger then that though. He's sitts on my finger while I clean his cage and follows me around the yard if I put him down...

I have a nestling that feel out of a nest and was paralyzed. The parents disowned her after she fell. I observed it for a while and didn’t move in a full day. The blue jay is beautiful and I’ve been feeding her and helping her hopefully fly. But i know you shouldn’t be forcing food down its throat. Chip (the bluejay) is still a nestling so I’ve been feeding him through a syringe. He has a purée of wet cat food,almonds,legumes,blueberries,mushed mealworms and mint leaves. Is their something I’m missing? I’m just wondering

I agree completely with the idea of turning the bird over to a sanctuary (so it can be raised around other birds and become aware of predators) and applaud your success rate, but I think you're being a bit over-the-top in your description of the test. A little common sense and a little memorization clears that hurdle pretty nicely. It's not a difficult exam at all. The most qualified rehabbers are the ones with years of experience, not the ones who have a piece of paper saying they passed a test

I once rescued this blue jay. He was a baby, his nest was attacked by crows, I saw his sibling get carried away by those crows. He fell out of the nest, and I had to rehabilitate him. When he got old enough, I had to let him go. So I opened his cage, and he flew off. For the last two years, he flies into my screened in porch when I have a smoke, and always pays a visit.

@shatteredverve You don't keep it with you forever! You keep it until it is old enough to fly, and then you say goodbye, feed it a seed from your seedfeeder, then let it fly. They're not pets...

I had a baby blue literally RUN (well hop as fast as possible) up to me in my front yard just after dark, three nights ago. There are many cats in this area, so who knows how long he'd been hiding out before spotting me. The thing is, I've been listening for any birds in neighboring trees and don't hear any. I know he's ready to try and fly and I'd love to get him back to his parents, but they're no where in sight. Can't see any nests either, so no idea where he came from. I'm afraid to let him just go loose outside due to the area cats. If parents aren't around to help him he'll be screwed. Not sure what to do at this point.
