Joe visits Roger Zimmerschied and his draft mules in LaMonte, Missouri. Roger is a long time farmer who has given up raising row crops and now runs a cow/calf operations. He has about 100 calves each year.
Roger tells us how he came to own mules by starting with the riding mule he used for coon hunting in the 1970's. He moved on to a year old quarter bred mule. After being away from mules for some years and losing his wife, he wanted to go back to working with them. He was encouraged and did purchase an old broke team. After a few years he sold them and bought a younger, more energetic team and trained them to work.
Roger uses his mules to deliver feed to the cattle out grazing. He built a cab onto his wagon, as well as a set-up to lift the bales and then roll them out on the pasture. The cab was added to keep him warm in the cold months and includes a little heater. He also has some unique custom additions to help with one of his' mules neck pain and make him hands free at times.
We see footage of Roger harnessing the mules, hitching the mule team and driving them out to pick up the hay in the hay field. Finally he rolls the hay out for the cattle, much to their excitement.
Stacy Lyn Harris then shows us how to make classic brittle using almonds.

Those mules are an investment to this farmer, he’s not going to do anything harmful to them anymore than you would you car.

That's something you don't see everyday 👍 Growing up my dad always ploughed the garden with a draft horse named Tops. We loved riding her around barebacked. She was a gentle soul ❤️.

My dad used to tell me how his dad and his grandparents worked with horses and mules in Argentina (our ancestors immigrated to Argentina from Ireland in mid nineteenth century). He also told us how he learnt riding as a child. I thought how much fun I am missing in my life and how much my children and grandchildren will miss. So I discussed with my father about buying a farm in Ohio after he retires (he is an engineer in Maersk line) and he said to much of my surprise "why wait for my retirement? Let's do it while we can." And here we are.

PERSONALLY I ENJOY HORSES OVER MULES, BUT A MULE IS STRONGER. IT'S JUST A MATTER OF CHOICE. THEY BOTH ARE A GOOD THING FOR A MAN TO SAVE MONEY ON FARMING AND PEACE OF MIND OF NO TRACTOR PAYMENT EVERY MONTH. THE FRIEND SHIP BETWEEN ANIMAL AND MAN IS SOMETHING HARD TO EXPLAIN, BUT IT IS SPECIAL.

The poor mule is still turning her head from pain. Why not get another healthy mule? Not fair to cause her so much pain.
