Nice vid. My plecos LOVE cucumber. I tried portabella mushrooms once...and they beat the crap out of the mushroom slices. I think they were under the impression that the mushroom slices were other fish. They beat and spiked them with their fins. It was ridiculous lol.
I have a bristlenose plecostomus who is 15 years old. I've been feeding him the algae wafers but I feel like he's too big for them and I was looking for an easy way to feed him or large algae Wafers and then I found this video. Thank you for the tip.
Carole Bradbury I have a betta who did not get along with ANY FISH! even the ghost shrimps that I put in there with him didn't get a break from him. However I put a 3 inches pleco in with him and he doesn't even flare at her. He goes about his business as if she is not there, so I'd say get one. But keep in mind that they grow BIG, and can be quite aggressive during feeding tim. Best of luck. Let me know if they get along when/if you decide to get one
Thats very nice. I doe it with a little clay pot and a T-rap. Did you ever think on lead poisening ? That lead you put in your tank is a poisenous metal. It comes free in wate,r also the fish can rasp on it. Its very soft also. Find a/some stones to put it in. Also some rubberbands have softener in it. On long term its not healthy....
Sorry man but you're wrong, the most famous fishing community in the world agrees that they are safe. www.aquariumadvice.com/forums/f12/lead-weights-and-aquariums-any-definitive-answer-182250.html www.fishlore.com/aquariumfishforum/threads/fishing-sinkers-for-weights.100237/
Awesome my friend. I have owned plekos for almost 20 Years ! And mt SECOND one is super friendly as usual and love her new food. Thank you from my fish UpsyDasy !
I have a large plecostomus that I inherited. He's very lethargic and I dont think there's ever been driftwood or other food (like this) put in. I think its largely subsided on semi-poor algae growth within the tank on rocks and gravel. Do you think the fish would learn to eat the vegetable if its never had this done?
It doesn't need to learn :D It's their instinct to eat it, Plecos are born and fed Fresh veggies by breeders before you even get them. they know it as food more then the waffers. Driftwood is a MUST for a common Plecosomus " Black pleco with or without Patterns" But always offer a variety of foods. Once it's past 2 inches in length it can't live off algae. It's like you living off french fries. It's just not going to be quality enough.. It'll keep it alive, but just barely. While I disagree with the lead idea as it's been proven fish can get poisoning from it. as well as you if it's left to seep into the water.. Zucchini is just one of many veggies good for them. And actually has the fewest nutrients :/.. It's good for grazing but for real food young broccoli, Cauliflower, carrots, sweet potatoes, Peas, seaweed papers,Loose leaf Lettuce, Swish chard and Cucumber are even better, with the best of the best being a Mix of Broccoli and Sweet potato :D.. But all are good and in many ways better then the zucchini alone. Oh and before someone states my avatar. Don't take a cat owner for not knowing their fish, I have 9 PLeco and one is a 14 inch L083 Leopard Sailfin Who's lived with me for 3 years on this diet after he was dropped off at the door by a co worker because it "wouldn't grow" Waffers are NOT Pleco food, it's just marketing. Same thing as dry catfood slowly kills your cats, never buy store bought if you wouldn't eat it yourself, cause it's obviously NOT food.
Mine love that stuff too. I usually just take a slice and put a paper clip through one side, it sinks it right down. Put in huge chunks like that and you'll foul up the water, unless you don't leave it too long. lol Anyway, seem to be enjoying themselves, nice idea. Thanks for sharing. =)
Awesome! I didn't think of zucchini but mine LOVES his cucumber! I use a 2-3" plastic clamp, I swiped from the hubs garage! A new one and scrubbed it first but it sinks fine and he eats all the way around it. Also. I saw somewhere to use a wooden clothespin. But how long do you leave it in? I mean, can it be days? I worry, so I always put it in at night and pull it out the next morning. What about the skin? I have always peel them first...take good care :0)~
Great video thanks for sharing. I have two myself thought they'd be ok on just tank algae, but they were getting skinny, not anymore. It's so obvious to algae is a plant, so feed them vegetables lol.
The only way it'll do that is if it's been in there for over 8 days or you have bad filtration and natural organism aren't growing in the tank ( AKA you never cycled your aquarium) A Pleco can't even really eat a Zucchini, sweet potato, carrot or Cucumber Till it's sat in the tank for 2 days or been boiled for 10 minutes. It's not soft enough.A Piece of Food should sit in a pleco tank for up to 6 days so they can eat it all. If the water is cloudy, smells bad or the food rots. Your cycle isn't set or you need to upgrade your Filtration.
Thanks you make me feel a whole lot better. I tried a small slice of cucumber with my pleco never touched it. Removed it from the tank after 2 days. Only ones nibbling on it was my goldfish. Sadly that might had been the cause of them getting sick too. 3 have already died. Remaining 2 very weak.
I put in cucumber blanched almost daily but my algae eater takes it and hoards it. My pleco usually does not get much. I put algae tabs in and my guarami and mollies go after them
Cucumber slices should not be left in more than 24 hrs or it fouls the tank. I do 12 hrs in and 12 hrs out. In overnight because they are more active at night and take out during the day. Fresh slice each night. And start weening off the wafers to every other night for a couple weeks then to every 3rd and so on. If not eating at veggies keep trying until you find one they like. They can eat fruits too. Just like humans some prefer fruit over veggies. But best to put in cold pot water and only leave slices in until just before water boils then remove, let cool and then drop in. I usually use an edge to one part of my ship to hold it down. That way no rubber bands or lead weights are harming anything.
can I get any help with my spotted sailfin pleco. he isn't eating anything I put in his tank I've tryed cucumber, carrot, spinach, celery, and more and he's not interested in anything but eating algy please help
Variety_Game_Catz about 2 weeks after i posted this i put him into a smaller tank with nothing in it but some drift wood and some algy wafers. he eventually ate thrm and i got him hooked on them. hes fine now
algae wafers are find so long as he's still little :D Once he gets past 5-6 " though their body needs more nourishment so I would definitely ween him onto veggies as he gets bigger, but it's good to hear he's eating, could have been the tank was to big to find the food in the available time. Aggressive take mates, or super shy pleco as sometimes their scared of other fish for no reason.. Kinda cute really.
I only have 1 pleco and 1 angle fish because that one Angel fish killed the rest of the fish that's why I got 2 ten gallon tanks but I put the pleco with the Angel fish because of his hard head and it scares my angel fish
+Carole Bradbury Bettas are supposed to be alone. I would worry about the Betta attacking. Because you know betta are also known as Siamese Fighting Fish.
I just blanch the cucumber and attach it to a rock with a rubber band. Blanching (boiling or heating the vegetable up in the microwave and then putting it in the fridge for 10 min) makes it easier to eat and weighs it down... but just to make sure I get a rubber band and attach it to a small river rock.
lol. I don't know if that's good for them but I've never had a problem with it. Try putting the end of a spoon through the cucumber to weigh it down. That works great and I don't think a plec could eat that :) . Cheers!
Lucky I introduced a small slice of cucumber didn't work @ all. Matter of fact practically took out all my feeder goldfish! Plecostomus never even touched it!
It doesn't matter what kinda of pleco you have they all love cucumber from my experience I have many different species of Plecos in my five LARGE aquariums I buy cucumbers every week for them and broccoli even my other fishes eat it as well too
Again only if you leave it in for 8 or more days, A Pleco can not use it's sucker mouth strong enough to rip off bits of the harder veggies till it's been in the tank for 2 days or blanched for 10 minutes. even Blanched the outside of the hard veggies will not be edible to the fish and pleco till up to 6 days after dropping in the tank. Veggies can Not hurt the water quality inless you never cycled your tank or have bad filtration. Thats why people keep live plants in aquariums.. Vegetation is preserved in water and nourish good bacterial growth, if it's causing problems with the water, the water ALREADY had those problems. you just avoided seeing it.
XD I feed my 14 inch pleco 6 one inch slices of hard veggies up to 5 inches in diameter daily and he eats it within a day :D. So long as your two plecos are below 5 inches I'd say anywhere from 2-5 days. However remember that after 7 it's usually best to take out. or at 8 you'll have a huge good bacteria explosion. That can crash a cycle if given the opportunity .
Just like when you eat it you need to make sure it's well washed or blanched. Theres loads of pesticides the stores don't wash off your food that even a trace can kill the fish, I'm very sorry to hear that regardless. But knowing your food source is just as important as who it's going to
A pleco can not eat the actual vitamin rich insides of a veggie in only a couple of hours. It needs to sit in the tank for 2 days or blanch for 10 minutes for them to even eat the real flesh of the veggie. and to eat the dark parts and hard parts of it. The veggie must be in there up to 6 days but no longer then 8. If you can't leave a veggie in long enough it's only showing how poor the water quality was before you put it in there.. Cloudy water after adding a veggie shows you have No good bacteria. Which shows you never let your tank cycle. And Bad smelling water is another sign of just that. Rotting and or "Bubbling" is a sign your filtration is bad. and you have to much good bacteria. Which takes the veggie before the pleco can even eat it.
why not just use air stone weights and tooth picks or a suction cup? I have multiple fish tanks id never put metal in mine!! metal isn't good for your water and your fish
