My degrees are in music, education, and photography. During my grad studies in orchestral conducting, one of my fellow grad students said in a session, "I swear my ensembles are getting worse." Our mentor responded, "No - your ears are getting better - the groups have always been that bad." (That last part was just his humour). Now I teach in photo schools and students will often hit a point in their diploma year and will say they think they're getting worse, and I tell them, "No - your eyes are getting better." You're becoming more and more critical of your work. That's a good thing. BUT don't let it paralyze you. Yes, be critical of yourself, but then use it go and do even better work.

Hey Julian, I hear your brother. We all struggle with this at times, its completely normal, your feelings are normal. What has been helpful for me is two fold. One, acknowledging and accepting my creative journey, growth, path is mine and mine alone. So many factors influence and impact our lives, individual situations, and creative journeys. You are comparing apples with oranges when you compare yourself to others. Secondly, when you no longer like something you put out, or over time see that your style and eye has changed over time, that is actually a sign to fist punch the air and let out a "whoop, whoop," because you are growing, improving and moving. Ironically, you should be more concerned if you love what you do always and forever. As stated before by Chase and others here, your displeasure means you are moving on your creative journey and getting better. Hang in there. Just keep moving on your path.

This man has changed my idea of photography and photographers. So inspiring, always giving me a great confidence! Many I've seen before are self claiming photographers which actually were just tech nerds....

Always on point! It's so scary to be in the middle of something when you just feel like a fraud.. but the reward when you get through with it is worth it every time!!

definitely! i've been releasing my own music video productions for 32 weeks without stopping, and looking back i could say that my 5th production has so many things that are 'wrong', but you could also look at it from a genuine place of saying: 'hay! i do that sooo much better today' bless the process instead of letting it cripple you like we artist like doing, that's the real muscle to train!

I shoot 35mm and have been backed up with scanning and exhibiting. This reminded me that putting my work out there is part of the gift receiving from universe. Thanks!

Newbie here; good shit, CJ. It's all process - and the demons are perched, waiting along the trail. Laugh at them, throw them a bone, but don't let them stop you. Thanks for the shout-out to Austin Kleon too. He's the shit.

Good perspective! Now, what about the questioning mind *before* even starting a project/assignment/job... that doubt to be able at all to produce something of value?!? (In spite of a history of having work accepted in the past)... man oh man... the brain...

Chase, do you take/do follow-ups? Those were good words there, and it almost goes somewhere I'm wondering about, with the issue of comparisons with others... What do you do when you're okay with your work (since it's the best you could do right now and is a work-in-progress anyways, if you wanted to get it better, you'd never put it out there anymore as perfectionism kicks in) but others seem tremendously successful with their (similar) work while the feedback you get is twenty views and a dislike? That could be due to a hundred things, after all...
