I loved it. I usually make orange juice in family's parties. And we already spend the cup, the energy and the peel and someone to stay almost all day making the juice. It would be wonderful to have a machine like this that fits the kitchen.

Superb idea, with the exception of the name cut into the cup creating a hole for the juice to pour out of while drinking. Lose that feature and the cup is perfect.

@@anton48103 It does not matter on which side the hole is made, because people do not look at the side from which they drink the juice, many times they play with the glass, other times they give it to another person who, out of politeness, usually drinks from the opposite side. This a pretty gimmicky, but complex, piece of processing machinery. I thinks it's very likely the printer manufactures and stores cups ahead of dispensing. It's not making 'your' cup from the peel of 'your' orange.

Bangladesh is way ahead, they've been circular for ages. I once observed them moving a power station away from an eroding coastline. They took it apart brick by brick and re-used pretty much everything. Bricks that broke were smashed up to use as ballast in concrete. Concrete was chipped off rebar rods so they could be re-used. Anything on a rubbish tip in Bangladesh has absolutely no possible human use!

When I was travelling in India in the 1980's all the street vendor food was served in un-fired clay cups and bowls. You'd eat the food, then discard the bowl in the street. Kids would collect the bowls to earn pocket money, returning them to be rendered back to clay, remade into bowls and cups and re-distributed for use. I was really impressed. When I returned to India in the late 90's, sadly this practice had significantly diminished, being replaced by plastics. Which, sadly, littered the entire country.

The fuel used to grow and transport the oranges is several orders of magnitude greater than the fuel involved in making plastic cups to drink it out of. Plus, corn-based biodegradable PLA cups already exist and producing them in a factory is vastly more efficient, energy-wise, than printing them on-site. That said, it's an interesting demonstration of both using all of the materials transported, and reducing reliance on plastics. It's not really better at scale, but it could start the conversation.
@littlesayonara3216
@littlesayonara3216 5 лет назад
@@oasntet pla is 'biodegradable' but so is everything hats bio material. It still takes years in he perfect condition to degrade. So hot temperatures. Rain. Humidity. But in non ideal conditions still 100+ years. This is more efficient. As I don't belive squishing orange peel takes much energy. Neither does juicing. Better than a plastic bottle aswell

@WynnterGreen
@WynnterGreen 5 лет назад
@@oasntet Completely agree. This is more a public demonstration of design ethos with the 'notion' of waste reduction and making use of the whole volume of our agricultural produce at it's heart. But there's no way that it's competitive, energetically, with other processes and consumables already on the market. It's a gimmick really, but it will sell orange juice and give people a false sense of satisfaction that 'they' are 'clean and green'. My first thought was that the peel is probably desiccated by fan forced heating, which would have a huge energy load on it's own.
@WynnterGreen
@WynnterGreen 5 лет назад
@@littlesayonara3216 You're absolutely right that the conditions PLA is exposed to significantly alters decomposition time. Given that PLA is generally expected to decompose within six months with exposure to the natural environment , I'm not quite sure what your 'ideal conditions' statement adds to the discussion? Surely 'ideal conditions' would be storing the PLA prior to use, in which case you'd want a long shelf life?

@WynnterGreen
@WynnterGreen 5 лет назад
Agreed, if they collected the used cups, returned them to the orchard to be composted and returned to the soil, it would close the loop to some extent. But the energy expended in recycling these materials to that extent would more than likely be prohibitively inefficient, and worse for the environment than sending them to the local landfill..

You do realize that nearly everything that you consume is manufactured in a facility with industrial machinery made of metal that utilizes certain chemicals, right? Republican Voters Against Trump Exactly: unless... For some reason people usually don’t go organic (I mean the real non-chemically treated food), but... why not? Money? If I buy an orange, it has to be (truly) organic. I don’t see why I would eat stuff with chemicals (even if cheaper) then pay it with my health and doctor/medicine bills.

@WynnterGreen
@WynnterGreen 5 лет назад
@@gregm8871 In order to be turned into cups the peel has to first be desiccated, removing moisture, without the moisture the peel will degrade VERY slowly. However, I suspect there's not a 1 to 1 ratio of juice to cups. Meaning, I doubt very much that there's exactly enough peel to make one cup for each cup of juice produced. So the hopper is probably manually emptied regularly to balance input, output.
