Wednesday is Feijoada day across Sao Paulo - and so we met up with our new friend Felipe and his family, who are local Paulistanos, for our first ever feijoada experience! Did we like it? Check our vlog to find out!
Feijoada almost looks like a black-bean chili. It's a soupy mixture of beans, and various pork meats, eaten with rice, farofa, and cabbage. It's the national dish of Brazil and a must-try food for any tourist, travelling to Brazil.
Thanks for watching our vlog!
Stay tuned for more Brazil travel vlog, Brazil travel guide, Brazil first impressions, and many more as we explore São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Florianópolis, Salvador, Bahia, Minas Gerais, the Amazon, and more! We cannot wait to explore Brazilian culture and traditions, explore its beaches and rainforest, meet the locals, and try more Brazilian food!

Living here is Washington State is not so easy to find all ingredients that go in a feijoada, however, it is not a difficult dish to make. I use the very basic stuff to make it: Black beans, Kielbasa polish sausage, bacon bits (not strips), diced onions and garlick (salt, of course). It all goes to the slow cooker for 5 to 6 hours and... voilá!

A lot of brazilians (myself included) also prefer the feijoada without some of the parts you mentioned, like tongue and ears. Usually the restaurants have two 'versions' of the feijoada, one with everything a pig has and another with ribs, sausage and more common parts

Hi! I'm from South of Brazil where most people are descendents of europeans. Here on the state of Santa Catarina you can find German, Italian and Polish cousine with a Brazilian twist to it. But my favorite is Carreteiro, it's rice cooked togheter with meat. Like any traditional dish, every home do a little different so I can't assure you that the one you find will taste the same as the one my mom does haha

So don't be that afraid of eating it haha And also there's the light feijoada, which contains only sausage and jerked beef. Maybe the idea of eating organs affected your review =P Great video nonetheless! Cheer guys!

@@JetLagWarriors Historically speaking, the traditional day of the week to eat feijoada is Saturday, but for commercial reasons (restaurants that serve this food), Wednesday has also become the day of feijoada (because there are many people who do not work at Saturdays). And this place (where you ate the feijoada) is near of the famous Interlagos racetrack. (Do you know the history of the origin of feijoada?)

i totally connect with steve, i love feijoada but i actually have trouble with thr unknown fatty and soft parts, thats why you have to order what brazilians call "feijoada light", which is feijoada without the weird parts: ears, tail, tongue etc. (lots of brazilian, i would say about half, prefere the light version. Also, your plate was all wrong haha! it was too dry and too mixed up. lastly, the more you know about feijoada the better it gets because you actually start to know your taste, which part is what and then you go only for the parts you like the most. Me for example I love the sausage, jerky, pork chops, torresmo, and dislike ears, tongue, nose etc (the same as steve). next time go for "feijoada light" and try to me more organized so you know what youre eating and your brain doeasnt get all messed up. :)

Steve, you don´t need to apologize. I am brazilian and I don´t eat these unsual parts as well because I don´t like it. Next time, order feijoada without these parts. As lots of people said in the comments, eating "light" feijoada is perfectly normal even for locals, and no one will think you´re being disrespectful. There is a famous snack here in Brazil called "pão de queijo" (cheese bread) and I haven´t seen you guys eating yet. Maybe you should give it a try. It´s just as famous as coxinha and you can find it basically anywhere. Enjoy your staying here, guys!

I love feijoada! My favorite parts are sausage and the ribs. It is also traditionally served with kale and orange slices as side dishes. That hot, pepper-based sauce pairs very well with it, too. I love getting a good amount of the black bean sauce to mix it up with the rice and the farofa, that's just delicious. I saw that you guys mentioned the clay bowl but that's not where it was cooked, that's just for show when serving to make it look good, lol. And yes, you gotta be careful when chewing because you might just find a bone and you don't wanna break your teeth, hahaha but that's just something you get used to. Based on what Steve said, I have a feeling that he might like the traditional dish of Morretes-PR, the barreado. It's a kind of beef (no skin, no bones) cooked almost to the point of melting in your mouth. It is served very similarly to feijoada with the rice and farofa but no beans. Sometimes the farofa accompanying it can be sweet, too, with banana slices in it. I think you should give it a try if you ever come to the State of Paraná (there is even a very touristic train ride to get to Morretes).

It's actually quite common here in Brazil for people not to like these weird and uncommon types of meat like "ears", "tongues", "knees", "skin", and so on... myself included, and feijoada is my favorite food ever! The more "common" type of feijoada only comes with common types of meat, like sausage, ribs, beef, and so on... In fact, it's so common for people not to like these "unusual" types of meat that restaurants 99% of the time offer the "complete" feijoada but they also offer the more "common" feijoada with common types of meat, which means that you can choose the one you like! Next time you eat feijoada make sure to order the "common" type of feijoada. When you don't have to worry about these weird textures and just focus on the flavor I promise feijoada will become one of your favorite foods ever! The taste is simply out of this world!

Obrigado, Felipe, Bianca e Davi! I haven't eaten _feijoada_ in a couple years (since before the pandemic, basically); I'm salivating over this video. And yes, there's _feijoada leve/light_ which has a more universal choice of meat; many Brazilians prefer it. I myself am quite neutral on this issue. My grandfather here in Brazil, cook's the feijoada in a really big pan, in a wood burning stove to cook it slowly, and with the pourpose of make a lot to save for the week, so the flavor kind of builds up when you have it stored in the freezer, tastes even better next day post freezing in my humble opinion. He wakes up like 4-5am to start making it and he finishes somewhere close to 3pm Some ingredients he adds (may be a personal choice of him) are zucchini, chayote and some times I found little cubes of sweet potato lost in there to make even stiff and flavorful

you described feijoada as any other brazilian do along their life. I didn't like feijoada until my 18's. and I still eat part by part trying not to eat bones as well. when younger I just eat sausages and bacon along beans (some call 'feijoada light') - but now I can handle this full tradicional way, where everything is cooked more than one day, so the flavour is full, and the meat is tender and rendered black as the colour of the beans. that's the way. for you it's an experience. there's a big type of feijoada buffet that all the meat is separated in different pans. So it's a way to experiment each kind of meat separetely. - but you went all full on tradicional 'all in', lol

The Green veggie = fried kale with garlic. Feijoada is a heavy meal and salty, you usually eat Orange slices um the end to balance out the flavor A Lot of pork in a Bean stew kind of like a "soul food" . Originally plantation owners would not use those pork parts and would leave them as protein for the slaves. Most of the parts used are either smoked, like the ribs, or jerked. Now it's our National Dish.

Steve, in fact there are two feijoada days in São Paulo - Wednesday and Saturday. Some premium hotels in São Paulo serve a buffet of feijoada where they carry all the meets separetedly in each big clay bowl and you serve yourself only with the ones you like. In the entrance they serve you a small glass of cachaça with lime and also a small clay can with just the liquid part os the feijoada rich in seasoned flavour, that we call "caldo de feijão". And also we do have in São Paulo a famous restaurant specialized only in feijoada, where they serve it every such a day, 7 days a week, and also they have delivery, so you might order to come to home or to your local hostelry. The name of the restaurant is "Feijoada do Bolinha" (Bolinha's Feijoada). Bolinha means a cute ball guy, i. e. a short and round fat guy. The founder and the sun are like that, and even the wife. It'll be an amazing experience. Everything of very high quality and cooked with much love. Ivana will grade 7 stars, for shure. I love the English speaking of both of you, very clear, even yours, Steve, being very fast. The both of you, bro, are very Brazilian in your soul. Congrats.

We do not put tongues or organs in feijoada. We usually use pork ears, feet and ribs, as well as sausage and bacon. You need to eat more often to fall in love with the dish.

The one and only distinguishing factor where you can tell if someone is Brazilian is they are friendly and outgoing and they speek Portuguese. As far as how they look...its a very diverse country and depends on what region you are in. Sao Paulo is probably the most diverse region.

I am Brazilian. Feijoada does not only mean a dish of food, but also an event where you eat the feijoada itself. A feijoada event is a gathering of friends, usually in the backyard of someone who calls the neighbors, accompanied by drinks, typically a caipirinha, but also beer and soda. And, of course, accompanied by music, typically chorinho, samba or pagode. So, when a Brazilian calls you for a feijoada, don't expect to go to lunch, but to a meeting of friends that lasts all day, maybe the whole weekend. Go with a light outfit, t-shirt, shorts and flip flops and have fun.

In many places you may find a feijoada buffet where you can choose the ingredients, specifically the different kinds of pork meat. In a feijoada buffet your dish is less "messy".

Em SP há restaurantes com feijoada completa, porém, para servir, os ingredientes estão em panelas separadas. Você se serve apenas do que gosta. Em casa a versão é a incompleta.

Feijoda is absolutely a beast when you have a nice caipirinha to drink. The rice and farofa make a very substancial meal. And is one of many African influences foods we have here in Brazil.

Some restaurants also offers a "light" version of feijoada, without all this exotic pork parts, only with sausage, dry Meat and maybe ribs. Probably Steeve would preffer this version of this dish.

Feijoada it’s so popular here in Brazil and it’s part of our culture, because originally it was a slave dish, that’s why its made with cheap ingredients like rice, beans, some kind of veggie, caçava powder and the meat parts that we normally don’t eat. The most common history of the feijoada is that the slaves would take the beans and the meat parts that they’re slave masters wouldn’t eat and they would cook everything in a big clay pot for every one to share. And that’s why it’s so heavy and so tasty, because all the meat flavor and the fat it’s in the beans too. But today some historians say that slave masters would not discard any meat, because it was very expensive, and for that reason the slaves would not have access to any meat. They would eat only caçava powder, rice and black beans and later with the influence of European dishes, like the Cassoulet, the meat was added to the dish and the feijoada that we know today was born. And Steve, it’s okay if you don’t like it, I was born and raised here in Brazil and I’m not a big fan of feijoada, but you have to respect and know the importance of the dish for our culture and history.

Feijoada has its roots on the slave times, when the slaves got the undesirable parts of the pork to cook so for the first timers it's a dish to taste first and ask what is inside later! :D But lately some people start to questioning this traditional story as on north of Portugal has a similar dish. Anyway, even if on some places you can - as 'by weight' restaurants - can pick only the parts you like or even get a 'light' version of it, the real and traditional one is that you've tasted, cooked & served all together on the 'cumbuca' the name of traditional feijoada bow. Enjoy your stay!
@davidsouzmr
@davidsouzmr 2 года назад
that is actually a misconception, slaves didnt get anywhere near of any kind of meat... they ate all sort of brans with beans and thats it! but i get it, i grew up hearing this same story about this dish. The actual story is that the portuguese already had a dish that is kinda similar and those parts of the pork were not undesirable they were used in some dishes, so feijoada is more like a brazilian version(with beans from the south america) of this portuguese dish... slaves didnt get anywhere near of any meat thats the hard truth

I loved his honesty! It took me several visits to start enjoying the feijoada. At first, I hated it. Now, I love it. The light version is not as flavorful as the regular. Skin and bones give feijoada its remarkable flavor. Get the beans from the full flavor pot and meats from the light version.

That is the most famous dish. Each region has its popular dish. You should really travel around because if you go to the north there are wonderful dishes in Bahia, Pará, etc. But if you go to São Paulo you have the best pizza toppings in the world, if you go to Rio Grande do Sul you will eat the best barbecue you ever had in your life, it is like no other. Plus, some parts of the South look like they should be somewhere in Europe. Brazil is very diverse.
