My brother and I have been using these SP blades on our Hammer A3-41 for the last 8 months and they work absolutely great. Everything said in the video is true except comparing the quality of cut (in reality; they haven't really compared it in the video). It is really good but it can easily compare to straight blade cut. Don't get me wrong, the finish from SP is quite good but in my experience not any better than straight knives. I'd even dare to say that well sharpened straight knives will produce better results but won't stay sharp long as tungsten does. But the other conveniences like noise, volume of chips, energy consuption, ease of maintenance and change of blades far outweigh the straight blades. I'd never go back to them.

I agree with you that on most woods a good straight blade like a Tersa can leave just as good of a cut quality as these, but these spiral cutters do make a difference in highly figured woods where the grain is unstable. As you said, they do have a lot of other benefits as well though

I have ordered a Format-4, Dual51 planer-thicknesser with the silent power cutter block. Right now it is being manufactured for me in Austria. An excellent machine, and I can't wait for it to arrive!!! :-)

So, this video is nine years old now. I'm curious what percentage of your customers today choose helical cutters instead of straight knives.

The mic should be moved to the same relative location for each machine for a true test. I am surprised they didn't do that in the video.

I'm surprised you think that would make a big difference. If you ever used a planer you know that standing 1 or 2 meters from it makes literary no difference, it's really loud. You don't believe it's quieter or what?

Sebastian Daniec yeah, but that is with your ears. it makes a big difference to microphones. It would have been good to “hear” the difference
@Plasan69
@Plasan69 3 года назад
That makes all the difference. We can see about 10db difference between the two. But doubling the distance between the mic and the machine (could be this far) makes 6db. Really not worth even bothering with the sound meter.

Yes, and how we know they set the same chipload on both machines?:D

The Silent Power Cutterhead is high precision tool. To achieve the needed tolerances both of the cutterhead and the knives was very challenging for us and our knife supplier. We have discussed a retrofit here at the factory very intensively. However our R&D, our assembly and service department came to the result that we cannot guarantee the quality standard, which we have set for us, in a retrofit. We can understand that many customers would like to retrofit the cutterhead to increase the performance of their machine. However we want to avoid that such a retrofit leads to problems on existing machines and frustrated customers.

These Felder/Hammer Silent - Power cutter heads are made by a German company called Lietz and the Tungsten cutters are made by Tigra another German company. If you look carefully you can see the manufacturers names in some of the shots. This video is also " Confusing " as the comparison is not between a Conventional Straight 3/4 knife block, the other machine appears to be fitted with a Helical head with Individual 4 sided Tungsten cutters. Pause the film at 5-34 and you can clearly see this. However the Silent Power does appear to be quieter. Robland a Belgian manufacturer uses a very similar cutter they call Xylent -Block. From what I can tell the only thing that is Exclusive to Felder/ Hammer is the Name they give to this design / style of cutter Head.

Dear Mr. Dobson, Spiral or Helical cutterheads a indeed no new invention and have been around on metal and woodworking machinery for some time. There are 2 conventional systems on the marked. 1. A solid knife that spirals around the cutterhead. Leitz is producing such systems and this maybe the system you have seen. We have been offering this cutterhead for some year on our model Format-4 exact 63. However the knives are not available in tungsten carbide and replacing the knives is very expensive. This was the reason why we have stopped with this system 2. Many single straight knives that spiral around the cutterhead These are more common systems and can be found from various manufactures from Europe and China. Most of these systems use straight knives that are mounted straight on the cutterhead. The next knife sits in an offset and the system creates a spiral. However this does not create a continues cutting edge. There are many individual cuts which makes is necessary to have a 3 to 6 spirals in total to achieve a descent cutting result with no tear out. Better systems from some other European manufacturer have 3 spirals and most Chinese cutterheads use 6 spirals. The more spirals are needed the more knives. However the biggest disadvantage is the power consumption. More spirals mean higher power consumption. The combination both disadvantages mean higher costs for the user on the long run. FELDER has developed a 3. solution. The Silent Power knives are not straight. They have 2 different radius on the cutting edge. Each knife seat is tilted on three axes on the cutterhead. This created a virtual continuous three dimensional cutting edge. Because of this FELDER can achieve a perfect cutting result with 2 spirals. This means - Low power consumption - Lower maintenance cost - Lower noise - Perfect cutting results This is the unique feature behind the Silent Power Cutterhead. And this you will not find from anybody else on the market. Many have tried to copy it but until today nobody has succeeded. Kind Regards from Tirol/Austria

Což takhle nepodvádět a měřit hluk u obou strojů za stejných podmínek a na stejném místě. Takhle to je těžce zavádějící.
