Whether unfinished or fragmentary, Mendelssohn's Christus is still a powerful work combining drama with heightened spiritual beauty. I particularly like the three parts for chorus and orchestra.
I am sure if Mendelssohn would have lived a bit longer 'Christus' would have become as might as his completed oratorios 'Paulus' and 'Elias'. No attempts have been made to make a performing version of the oratorio (most likely because that will require a lot of the reconstructer's own music in the Mendelssohn-like style). The survived movements, though, consist of really beautiful and memorable music, especially the second part's choir 'Oh daughters of Zion'. Thanks for uploading this great recording!
