Felling a Tree Bigger than Your Chainsaw

American Forester describes and demonstrates how to cut down a tree that is significantly larger than the bar on his chainsaw. Large trees can be cut with small chainsaws if you know what you are doing. The video demonstrates the notch, bore cut, or plunge cut, the back cut, and the use of felling wedges.

Thank you for really clear explanation. I am facing exactly the same issue with dropping a tree for my neighbour. This video is very helpful and you have emphasised the risks. Thanks again.👍

DO NOT EVER run the saw in at 90 degrees during the plunge cut like that. You are very lucky you didn't hurt yourself from a kickback. Please thumbs up so people can see this. Its scary thinking people are going to hurt themselves running a wrap grip and loosing control

Go back and watch it again. I did not go in at 90 degrees. If I had I would have gotten kickback. Obviously I went in edge first, and got no kickback. Watch the video again and you will see.

It looked like it was 90 but he did angle it just enough to get the tip in and out of the kickback high risk part.

@@americanforester4858 I watched several times and saw the same thing every time. You attacked it straight on with the nose, at a 90 degree angle, not something that's recommended. A bore/plunge should be started with the BOTTOM of the nose, until it is in-bedded a bit, only then can you rotate and straighten the nose and plunge straight in.

why oh why when people criticise something do they not decribe the fault and describe the correct method. otherwise it's just a bitching session against someone who has taken the time to upload something. what do all the hotshots think about the following method? Make a bore in the middle of the directional notch. Start by applying the saw gently with a pulling chain to avoid kickback. Cut off the central parts of the stump by swinging the guide bar. Now continue with the dual bore and fell the tree using the safe corner method or turn around method.

Are you kidding me lol you dont do this very often do you ,thats pretty dangerous and a really good way to barbor chair a tree exspecilly on hard wood ,you should plunge cut from both sides and leave the very back few inches as a trigger ,that way the tree is cut up hinge set wedges set and no stress on the tree what so ever and then cut trigger and watch her fall right over ,no barbor chairs and wide uncontroled trees flopping just anywhere lol ,im just saying ,had that been a hickory or a oak speacies on could damage the trees itself and or damage themself and or equipment not being completely prepared and plain out with every possible scenario though of and evaluated and if your not real experienced you should ask a knowledgeable experienced person of the craft to give you their guidance or just dont do it ,vecause cutting big timber the wrong way can and most likely will kill you and your powersaw and no tree or amount of money is worth leaving your loved ones sad and heart broken liveing life without you . The only thing you had going for you is luck ,this time lol this time ,dang brother be carful out there .... be extra carful and stop hanging around a cut up tree just to make a video lol way to unsafe and thats not what you want to teach others ,just saying i hope you dont take this as a bad coment or mean spirited in anyway ,becuse i promise you that is not my intention ,for i just want you know just how that its very unsafe that way and i dont want to see anyone get hurt not if i can help them from it ,and if typing a few words is nothing at all and its the right thing to do i believe so yeh ,peace love and kindness is what i pray for all Gods creatures and mean no disresect in anyway brother ,God bless you and yours and share the kindness with those around you and lets change the world one day ,one good deed at a time until everyone is free from hate !!!!!!

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for. Looks risky, though - it looks like the horizontal back cut can go too far into the trunk unless you're very careful, as opposed to the usual method (with a chainsaw whose bar is larger than the tree diameter) where you can see directly how deep the cut is.
@triplemania5550
@triplemania5550 7 лет назад
That's what that 90 degree line on the saw is for. You saw until it points in the same direction as it did when you finished the face cut. That'll make parallel sides on the hinge.

I was shown to make the sink or wedge cut horizontally first as you can use the sight lines on the saw to get the correct fall line. Also I use the sight lines when cutting the back cut when felling a tree with a larger diameter than the bar. This can stop you cutting into the hinge as you cut from each side. Cheers, John(UK).
@alecmclean9178
@alecmclean9178 7 лет назад
Your bore cut should have been lower hense why it snapped off the hinge in my opinion. You left a fat hinge but it snapped right off
@ComfyBe
@ComfyBe 5 лет назад
That's not the only concerns. His wedge cuts were very poorly made and not clean (i.e. the undercut did not meet the top cut), That's what is called a Dutchman* cut. Then he went straight in with the nose, instead using of the bottom corner of the nose first and then rotate the tip and start to plunge. Furthermore, by rotating around the tree, he failed to leave a backstrap. Only by the grace of God, was a disaster averted. *Bypass/Dutchman in the Notch The function of the notch is to allow the tree to fall without breaking the hinge prematurely. The top or bottom cut is performed first and then the second cut is made and both cuts should meet exactly. If the two cuts do not meet exactly, the notch cannot perform its function. The notch closes before the tree has fallen even half way to the ground. When this happens, stress is put on the hinge causing it to break prematurely,

This is like the 10th video i've seen in two days on how to cut a tree - your the only one who yelled "timber" Lol ! Must have went out of style maybe who knows… Good vid though ! I am going to cut an 18" thick branch about 30' long hanging at a 40 degree angle with my new $49.00 8 amp electric chain saw 14" bar - if it works the saw paid for itself cause the tree guy wants 65 to show up with his bucket truck

Whats the point of yelling timber when the tree is already falling? It like yelling "things exploding" just when you press the trigger. In this case I see it as just an amusement.

In Germany we routinely cut with a smaller bar, but we do not make excuses why the cuts do not line up. Pretty poor skill set chappy. My suggestion is take some courses and or get some one on one training with someone who is not a bellend.

Next, I have worked a lot in forestry. What is your connection to forestry -- as I see your name here underwhich you post videos. Third, what variety of church are you in? You didn't show how to avoid kickback. I didn't know how until I saw another video. That video says to start the plunge cut with the UNDERSIDE of the chain and then straightening out the saw. He said that kickbacks are caused by plunging in with the topside of the saw. I have never used a chainsaw, so I have to believe him. I certainly don't want to have a kickback. For a beginner like me, that could lead to a serious injury.

Not a pro here whatsoever, though always eagerly learning in hopes of avoiding that one big mistake that can cost a person all too dearly! I've never done a bore cut, always kinda uneasy about not leaving enough of a hinge, especially on a leaner that might have a rotten core. Sooo, after the face cut, I make the back cut just deep enough to get those wedges in and then plunge the saw in behind them as is usually done. Wedges are relatively cheap, if I chew them up a bit no worries, I just think of all the dough I'm saving by doing the work myself rather than getting in a professional, though that's certainly not something I'm opposed to when dealing with dangerous trees!

I can't believe how many negative comments are around! I thought you did a great job. It's so easy for people to think and comment how much better they would do it when they are cosy at home watching RU-vid instead of actually doing stuff. Genuine question: Is it generally safe to use the end of a chainsaw to drive into a tree like that? I'm new to chainsaws as I've always used axes so far.
@triplemania5550
@triplemania5550 7 лет назад
No, it's not generally safe to drive the tip of the saw into a tree like that. It can kick the saw sideways. A safer way to make plunge cuts is to start at a 45 degree angle. In this case at 6:00 in the vid, at 45 degrees to the left. So you'll be cutting with the bottom side of the tip. Cut a 2 inch into the tree like that, then turn the saw straight while you push it into the tree. That initial cut at 45 degrees helps to avoid kickback. When the kickback zones of the tip hit the wood, the bar is already far enough in the tree that it can't kick back anymore.
@94SexyStang

It's PERFECTLY safe to go Straight in plunge....professionals Always this technique....just gotta know what you're doing....I suggest stop believing everything you read on internet forums.
