Felling Trees Near Buildings | HOW TO 

I've watched a ton of tree felling videos and have learned from a few of them, however you have a way of explaining the process that I had never heard before. Well done, young man!

"I cheat, I have a felling line on my saw" sir that's called working smarter and harder. This video was very very detailed and very informative and is proof of why good arborists cost what they do and why they are worth every penny. Great job.

This is the best video for felling trees I've seen. I felled a 30 footer right next to my house with great success but it probably took me three times as long as a pro. Usually I only fell dead gum trees in Australia for firewood. Up to forty to fifty feet high but always in bushland away from buildings. I always look up and check for branches and have a good escape route. And I never fell trees thicker than say, twelve to fourteen inches. Leave the big trees for the pros. Dead gum trees that are very dry, can also suddenly fall down when cutting for a hinge, so sometimes I just cut the 45 degree cut at the front and then do the back cut. They fall very easily.

I work with trees in ireland,and love limited access work.it's always a nice challenge,and teaches you how to plan a job ,and work methodically.thanks for sharing your knowledge,and taking the time to post it.there's a lot of newbies out there,and your instructions are clear and concise.57 now,and been working trees since I was 11,as my grandad was a French Canadian lumberjack and he's send me out in the yard with a saw and a Ile of timber to saw.no chainbrake,but learnt what you can do,and definitely things you shouldn't do.touch wood,I've never cut myself with a saw,but starting at such an earl y ave made me aware of what to watch out for.hope there to's another good 50yrs in me yet.stay lucky lads.onwards and upwards.maddog.West cork.republic of Ireland

Nice to see someone who not only knows which techniques to use when but why they work. This video had a couple of techniques I hadn't seen before, such as the "logger's glue" and the "palm tree" cut. Boring through the hinge to make room for a wedge was a good tip too.

I am a do it yourself, but this is something that I will defer to the pros like you. The way you fell them with such precision was a great example of how your pay is not for the cutting, it is for the thinking.

I actually saw you use that bore for the wedge method in a "short", and I had not seen that used before, so came for a look at the channel and like what i see. Thank you for sharing! I just had a swag of trees removed from around my house, hollow, rotten, dodgy things. I had a professional in to do it, but I probably would for anything that could hit the house. I am quite happy to drop my own trees as needed further away from the house.

I'm a novice... only done two tiny trees in middle of a large field... you utterly inspire me ... but i am in no rush.... am willing to take it slow and wait years to get the experience reqd... its great to watch how much pride and enjoyment you get from your work and your teaching... thank you for sharing

You're way more confident than me! Just wedges. Wow. I've built an air fired line shooter and put a line way up first without climbing, pull up a heavy rope, then with a pully to pull in the direction I want but not towards my winch, I'll winch in to tension the top a little. Then face cut 45 degrees under, with the straight on top. Then tighten the winch. Back cut. Have my helper winching in and I leave a very thick hinge and let the winch pull it over. For me, I'm not experienced enough to know exactly where the tree's going with just cutting and wedges. That line is real easy to predict where the tree's going. I'm no pro, so spending an hour on setup for the winch isn't a problem. I practice on leaners in the woods so no matter where the tree goes, it's not going to cause some massive issue.

The palm tree cut I like because if your felling in the woods and the tops get hung up you can cut the hinge on the hung up side to help it roll off the other tree but still stay partially hooked to the stump

Really nice to see professional, knowledgeable people making safe and thoughtful videos. You know the right ways for sure. Tell your help to remember to look up when banging away on a wedge. I sure it was ok for that tree, but it won't always be that safe. You need to watch the crown for a number of reasons, but you know that I am sure. Like you said, it takes time for the tree to catch up.. ..Anyways, great vid.

Really dig these videos Super thorough. 5 stars & 10/10 Idk your target audience but if its for beginners and DIY folks, hear me out below. I mean this only constructively.. if you were to slow it down, I feel like I'd catch 40% more of everything you're teaching. You say very beneficial, thoroughly explained things but also very quickly; and in combination, you're also speaking your tree language. So for newbies its hard to follow if the words don't get explained along the way. But don't listen to anyone on the web either lol Thank you so much for the videos man, I learned a lot!

I would love to continue to see you break down and explain in detail different methods to achieve safe results with complicated trees. I have lots of heavy learners and dead trees that are hung up on other trees. Barber chairs and hollow cores are some of my biggest challenges as I try to reclaim our forest behind our house. Nice work and instruction. I did logging on college breaks at my cousin's logging company in the 80s but we used a harvester in most cases to fell trees. Like said in the video have your escape route clear and you run faster and safer when you drop your saw. *I'd still call a pro to fell trees near buildings.* Don't be that guy who has to pay out of pocket for roof and structural damage to his house. HO made a good call getting you to down the trees tho not sure if he was prepared for the amount of non-firewood waste he had to haul off or chip with a home-owner sized chipper.

Thanks for the video. You gave some good tips. I have fell a few trees but I never had to worry about hitting something. I do have a couple that are right against my garage that need to come down. I guess your tips will come in handy. They are 50' tall pines and planted real close together. When one dies, the other trees hold them up. Thanks again from north west Wis..
