I was also knocked over by Roy Cohn’s quilt: “Bully, Coward, Victim.” Such a recognition that he did unspeakable harm, and that he, like all the main characters in this show, was a victim of homophobia, and much of the evil he committed was because of that homophobia and how it curdled him. He’s an extreme version of Hawk, in that way, except without the tempering of love that was also part of Hawk’s nature.

It was actually the real quilt . The showrunner talked about getting real quilts from the Names Project , including the one of Roy Cohn.

As devastating as the end was, (I was ugly-crying through that whole episode😭), I also found it so so beautiful that, that was how the series ended for Tim. That is how we(and Hawk) remember Tim, as a fighter, as a passionate man, not someone who was dying. I felt like that was a beautiful tribute to him :')

It's crazy to see in the flashbacks for this episode that for a little bit, tim was so desperate to the point where he was basically ready to be Hawk's little secret even after he got married. Some could argue that it was because he loved Hawk immensely, but part of me can't help but think that it's most likely also because he went out there and saw that even with Hawk being a menace, he didn't exactly have the option to roam around freely (considering how gay people were treated back then) and just like date people and try to move on. It's even sadder because I think till this day a lot of queer men wouldn't mind doing this sort of thing, because we instinctively believe that once we meet someone who's halfway decent that that's the best we could do, and we end up compromising huge parts of our character.

Being an old lady (64), I lived through much of this movie, including the AIDS epidemic. I lost a friend and two cousins, and many acquaintances. One cousin died in another state and everyone knew why, but even after the funeral it was never spoken aloud to my knowledge. When my other cousin, Gary, was dying he was very close by in the home he grew up in. I wanted to see him, though we hadn't been close, as he was older than me. I just wanted him to know that there were some of us out there who were not afraid to be with them (the patients), to hold their hand, to wipe a brow, to plant a kiss. But my father told me that his sister, my aunt and cousin's mother, did not want any family around. They even held an extremely private memorial. Many years later, when I was helping to care for my aunt, she told me that my sympathy card was the nicest one she'd recieved. I had written my old wishes there, along with lots of personal thoughts. She also said she very much regretted not letting people in because of her fear of her son being shamed. She told me that Gary could have used all of the friends he could have gotten. She even told me of exactly what happened when he died. I never held anything against her because she was a lovely, stong woman who'd had four sons, two of which were gay. To this day, I still have a friend with HIV, and he's doing great. The world turns, we learn lessons, but we must never forget. Thank you for your honest thoughts on this series. I've been taken through many emotions and memories, but I wouldn't have missed it.

I think Lucy felt a connection to Tim because they both loved a man who could never fully love them back. And at the end she realized it was never Tim who was the threat or reason why Hawk didn’t love her. So, when she went to see Tim, she was letting go of her resentment of him. And I think the reason Hawk turned Tim in is because he had finally accepted the depth of his feelings for Tim and what that meant about who he (hawk) was. And Hawk was afraid he wouldn’t be able to resist Tim and would end up blowing up his life and the lies he had worked so hard to create. He turned Tim in to get him completely out of his life.
@sherrimast8525
@sherrimast8525 2 месяца назад
And Hawk painfully regretted it for the rest of his life. He could never give himself fully to the marriage (closet) because his heart and soul was with Tim. He fully loved Tim back and would have been with Tim if life had been on their side at the time. For me, the scene of Hawk bottoming for Tim had kind of vow vibe to it. As for Lucy, he never loved her - her and the marriage was his closet. And that closet was killing him as we saw over the decades. Her resentment to Tim was misplaced, she knew early in their marriage about both Hawk being gay and about Tim. And what did she do, decide to bring a baby into the situation. And to me, there were no two people more manipulative than Lucy and her father, Senator Smith, I hated what they did to Hawk. I didn't like the playing of her and Tim having this competition. It didn't matter WHO Hawk married, it was that he got married. It was that he decided to live the life of a straight man. Lucy had no relevance to any of this - yes, she was collateral damage but certainly she wasn't what was stood between Hawk and Tim. I never understood Hawk and whether his marriage to her ended, he didn't love her, kids were no longer in the picture and they were both lonely within the marriage. For me, it was a good jumping off point for Hawk to move more towards authenticity. To make Skippy proud! :)

I cried so much during the last scene. Totally lost it when Hawk started crying. So flawed, but Matt Bomer put it very well when he said that only in his 60s does Hawk start to find himself (and at what cost). Edit: I also think the hospital scenes contrast Hawk's relationships so well. He went home after Lucy gave birth, but with Tim he stays. Lucy recognized that when she saw Hawk's cot. He would have stayed, and it might have destroyed him to see Tim dying (like with Jackson). Imo that's one of the reasons why Tim asks him to leave.

I have such memories of that era. So many people were lost. I am glad this was aired. I just hope young people realize what it was like and how hard and long we fought to get where we are today. Don't ever drop your guard. We see here in the USA the rise of authoritarianism and attacks on civil rights, all in the name of religion, money, and power-grabbing. Young people - this is yours to lose! Protect it for yourselves and the generation that comes after you.

Absolutely agree about needing to continue the fight for each individual’s rights….trans kids and adults are now being denied needed services and medical attention, women losing rights over their bodies, libraries having to remove important books that are too “controversial.” Sickening.
@cggage
@cggage 6 месяцев назад
@@marthahammel8543 Yes, it was all so foreseeable. Some pundits (especially those in the USA) have called this the "Far Right's Last Gasp." Millennials, Gen-Z, and now Gen-Alphas, are not flocking to our MAGA Republican party. Why would they? They offer nothing while vilifying family and friends in the LGBTQ+ community. And, as you can see in interviews, the majority of the MAGA crowd have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. A few more packs of Lucky Strike straights and they will be hacking their last soon enough. I have a question: Which will come first - attrition or the demise of American Democracy? I hold out hope. All that is needed to bulldoze this malarkey into the dustbin of history is to get young people out and vote. That is my mission this year. We're never going to change the minds of the cultists on the Far Right. They are a lost cause. Therefore, we must get the young people to realize just how critical their vote is. I hope that is happening. I hope they understand this. As far as trans people go, it was inevitable they were going to be attacked. Some Grand Poohbah in one of the major church hierarchies said a few years back, "We lost the battle on same-sex marriage." Well, of course, they did. These hate groups, under the guise of religion, must have an enemy around which to rally their sheep and keep the cash flowing into their coffers. Without a perceived threat, their apathetic followers would go through life, blissfully unaware, reveling in their ignorance of the world. Of course, the attacks are ludicrous. The LGBTQ+ community isn't all that large to begin with and the trans community is but a sliver of the overall community. What possible threat are they? Remember the "bathroom laws?" Absurd. There has never been a recorded attack on a young schoolgirl by a trans person in a public restroom. Not one. So, that begs the question, where did trans people pee before these knee-jerk laws came into effect? The whole reaction to trans people is an eye-roll.

The moment Tim was at the hospital (when he saw Jackson) broke my heart the most in this episode (beside the ending which was devestating). It seems that Tim decided to give up from Hawk and even Hawk destroyed his future and his heart, he was still so kind that put the life of Lucy and the child first😢😢 He wasn't going to punish an innocent child for Hawk's sins.... I can't believe after all the things Hawk did to him, he was helping him in 70s!! His heart was so pure for this world.... He was the definition of "Beyond Measure" 😭💔

In the end, Tim is the stronger: he came out, he fought, he loved and was loved. I feel more sorry for Hawk, I think is the weak: he lived in lies, he didn't let himself free to love, he lost his son, his wife, the love of his life.

@@ilariaquaranta9672 It's such a devastating little scene I haven't seen anyone comment on, but when the other AIDS patient is talking to Tim in the hospital about his boyfriend, and Hawk is lying on his side on the cot, staring straight ahead...you can practically see the heartbreak of realizing everything he missed out on. And knowing that, even though these men were dying, it was worth it because they had lived the happier, more fulfilling lives as their authentic selves. In short, that's when it truly hit him that his life could have gone a different - better - way, if he had just been brave enough.

Yhup. I was kinda mad about Hawk coming out on top and surviving, rich with a family of his own and a top job, while poor Tim, good, kind, and more importantly, unapologetically true to himself, dies a horrible death. But Hawk is the one who looses. All that sacrifice he made to live the life of luxury and status in the end, left him alone. His wife left him, one child dead, another starting her family and will be less there for him. And most saddening, the love of his life, whom he manipulated, lied to, used, and ultimately sacrificed will never be with him. He will live the rest of his life with the torment of the “what-ifs”, the misery of loosing the one you love, and the guilt of hurting Tim over and over again, wondering if Tim would have never gotten AIDS if he had just chosen to be with him.

As a young queer person still living in an uneducated and toxic environment, this show means a lot. It has been few weeks now and I still can't forget about Marcus's line about us being innocent. I was 18 when I fully acknowledged it and it strucks me so hard in my 20s when I should've believed in myself for telling it then. I didn't know then how innocence plays a significant role in our lives. I wanted to explore and at the same time, be educated. Time will come and the world won't end in my eyes. I think it is also important to acknowledge that other parts of the world are still behind, fighting, and suffering from all this hate. I hope the show reaches the far fringes of the world and be reminded of love and innocence.

Really glad to see you land on the significance of the top/bottom thing, not only as it relates to Hawk and Tim and their power dynamic as a couple, but what it says about how Hawk sees himself and his masculinity and his place among his own 'people'. While it, of course, doesn't last with 50s Hawk, in this ep we get to see Hawk in both the past and present moving in a direction of embracing who and what he is - of being a gay man, not just a man who fucks other men. (And yeah, it's hot too.)

Also I totally called it that Hawk was going to bottom for Tim at some point. When he was getting his HIV test and the nurse asked if he was the "active or passive" one, he said, "Active. Always." and I knew the unnecessary "always" meant there was going to be an exception. It's just sad to think that's probably the only time he ever did that in his life, since Tim was absolutely the only man - the only person - he trusted enough to be that vulnerable with.

Fact about this episode, the AIDS quilt square they show for Roy Cohn at the end is his actual square. It, and other real squares, were lent to the show. The series is better than the book IMO, but the book is still well worth a read. I sobbed watching the finale. I think that Hawk turned Tim into the M Unit because he knew if he was around Tim every day, he was going to slip. Hawk was coming to terms with being in love with Tim, and Hawk was too ambitious to risk losing his career and standing. Tim is a bad liar who doesn't have a beard, and the idea of Hawk being tied to rumors was likely unbearable to Hawk... never mind the possibility of them getting sloppy and possibly being caught. It's amazing to see his growth because Hawk knows what he says to his friend at the gala, though not completely outing himself, will certainly start rumors. Especially when Lucy doesn't go to Italy with him and starts the divorce. I believe Lucy went to the hospital hoping to find that the feelings between Hawk and Tim were different now or were very one-sided from Tim, so her marriage with Hawk can "go back to normal". I think when she sees Hawk has been sleeping at the hospital, she realizes her and Hawk's marriage is over. It would've made her understand that Hawk was devoted to Tim in a way he never had been to her. If the government had taken HIV/AIDS seriously from the beginning, it would've saved hundreds of millions of lives worldwide. I'll die still angry about it. I grew up with friends and their parents with HIV/AIDS. Women and children disproportionately die of AIDS globally. The "family values" crowd either didn't give a shit about us or actively cheered our deaths. Disgusting, vile, hypocrites, and if there's a hell, I hope they burn in it. My whole family worked in federal government during the McCarthy era (some thankfully against McCarthy's side, but most my family were for him). This series hit me really hard.

I think another aspect that made me ugly cry so hard about this ending is that while Tim told Hawke that he was his all consuming love, we only hear Hawke say that about Tim after he has died. We hear him come out to his daughter after he has died. It made me cry because in a way it was like Tim didn’t get to live long enough to witness Hawke fully own who he is. And as someone who almost never says the words out loud (it makes me uncomfortable) but rather implies it or shows it, that hit me quite hard somehow.

Do you remember I think on episode 4 I guess, Hawk told to Jackson 'I love you beyond measure'. And the same way he loved Tim.
@alejoaleman
@alejoaleman 2 месяца назад
Tim was the one who used that term to explain to Hawk how he had come to understand the concepts of God and love as something "beyond measure" after that Hawk uses the phrase to tell how much he loves Jack......

@@alejoaleman That took place in episode 6 at the cabin when Hawk, Tim and Jackson were together. Off the course a bit, but that scene with the three boys, made me think of how good of dad's both Hawk and Tim would have been with their own family. And Hawk saying that to Jackson "beyond measure" just highlighted the influence Tim had on Hawk.

Guys, thank you so so much for these reviews. Very few of my friends have watched Fellow Travelers (despite my constant nagging & begging) so it's been wonderful to join you & the whole community of viewers here on your channel. Watching your reviews has helped me to process the feelings that this show evoked in me. This show has made me cry my eyes out but I'm so glad that it has brought to light a part of American history that so few people were aware of. I'm from England but learned about the Lavender Scare in the late 80's. when I was a student. I really hope that this show will be an eye-opener to so many younger people who are now free to express their authentic selves. without fear of persecution (or prosecution!) These freedoms were fought for by brave men and women... I also think of people who live in countries that are not yet safe for Queer people & my heart goes out to them. Thanks again to you both 💞💞

Aside from the quilts right next to Tim's, which were made specifically for the show, all the other quilts are real quilts from the AIDS quilt project, so what we're seeing are real commemorative quilts made by hand for AIDS victims. I found that detail so heartbreaking. I think the finale had some flaws and there were some loose ends (I think the series would have benefitted from having 2-3 more episodes and I wish the goodbye between Hawk and Tim had been different and/or that we had an indication that Hawk was with Tim until the very end - to show him finally the loyalty that he never showed him when they were younger). But even with the flaws, I still think this series was incredible, and I will definitely rewatch it.

At the end you said that you expected a kind of summary history after card text kinda thing. That did happen, in a way, just not how we are used to. By expanding the quilt over the decades up to 2012 it basically said visually something along the lines of this many people have still been dying of this neglect, that many individual stories have been cut by this disease, this is the biggest quilt that has been created (it’s actually in the guiness book). It does tell us that, in a more cinematic way, rather than spell it out, just like it has been throughout the show

Straight woman here: I cheered during that milk scene! You better top him, Skippy!! TOP HIM!! 😂😂😂 My take: Hawk's father caught him on his knees giving Kenny a blow job and threw him out of the house! Such a trauma associated with being in a "submissive" position. It's why Hawk enlists in the army (he had no where to go) and you can't be gay in the army. It's why he's such a dominant top and has a need to control things (if only he had locked the door). Hawk hadn't loved or let himself be loved since Kenny until he met Tim. Similar to Hawk giving head during Christmas time, it shows Hawks' growth in feeling safe with Tim to explore himself.

As a non-lgbtq whose watched the show,I learned to be more empathetic and understanding of the LGBTQ community. I've always loved this community because of the authenticity and the 'homophobia intolerant attitude' that it embodies but now having had the context and deeper history of this community has made me even more compassionate and accepting of the community. And every time I watch any lgbtq content,I slowly develop the courage to be myself,to accept and love myself because seeing the lgbtq community in their uncensored authenticity inspires me to be myself. And Matt and Jonathan,👌 👌 👌,they weren't just actors acting,they were the epitome of representation. Hands down 🙌🙌🙌

Love your videos ❤❤ fellow travelers is the most beautiful story. It was so profoundly what the community needs to see. I'd love to see you react go the series "its a sin" .. another show that really hit me in the feels in a way I can't even describe in words. As a queer man who was diagnosed with HIV in 2019 and almost losing my partner at the time to the virus as we hadn't been tested and truly felt so to speak "untouchable" or "invincible" .. we'd both been promiscuous for the decade we were together and never once got tested as we never thought "it would happen to us" which sounds so stupid and naive saying it now, series like fellow travelers and its a sin just hit me in such a different way .. living in this day and age where I had the means and ways of getting medicated and being able to become undetectable within the first yesr of my diagnosis is something alot of people don't realize or take gratitude in enough. Had I had my coming of age in the late 70s, 80s and early 90s my life could and would have looked alot different and I probably wouldn't have been able to sit here and watch your videos, or live my life period, so when I see these stories being told on television like this it just hits a cord in me that I don't think I'll ever be able to fully explain. Either way I'd love to see you guys watch it's a sin! I think you guys would adore it

As Linus Roache, Played The Older/Present day Tom in my policeman and Lucy’s Father Senator Smith in Fellow Travellers. Also Linus is William Roache’s son he has played Ken Barlow on coronation street for eons now. Lol….in case you didn’t know. This whole series was as you both said a hard watch but well needed. As most members of the community don’t look in to the history much of the LGBTQIA+ and we need to remember those before us and appreciate what we have but what we also still yet need to achieve. It broke me when I watched it. And I see you both were too….So well done on these I enjoyed watching your reactions to these episodes. Just want to say thank-you for your channel & reactions & commentaries (joyful, empathetic, thought-provoking, saucy, etc.) I'd like to recommend a documentary to watch for a little more gay history. It is called "Limited Partnership" (2014) and chronicles an American man's & Australian man's 1975 marriage in the USA and their 40 year fight to have it recognized by the government so the Australian man could remain legally in the states with his husband. It may not be something that fits your channel to post here but I believe you both will learn and enjoy it.

Something about Tim seeing Jackson the day he was born, when he was a child, to then finding out about his death...I don't know how to properly articulate it but it is maybe a representation of how much life tim and hawk went through together/how they always kept in touch. I just thought that flashback to the hospital the day jackson was born was intersting and i know theres a deeper meaning but i cant exactly figure it out.

Enjoyed your responses immensely! Since this has been a history lesson going back seven decades, I was wondering if you might take it back even more than a century, with a viewing of the first gay-themed feature film, the silent movie “Different from the Others” from 1919. Well, I agree that having openly gay actors in the four lead roles of FT was/is great. I do however want to call attention to director/writers like Andrew Haigh (who is himself gay) who has cast many "mixed" (i.e. gay/straight) male couples in his work, including Weekend, Looking and now All of Us Strangers, with terrific results; in particular, Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal in AOUS have incredible chemistry, as did Chris New and Tom Cullen in Weekend, and Jonathan Groff and Raul Castillo (among others) in Looking. I think it's terrific that we live in a time where so many gifted gay actors have the opportunity to play parts to which they can bring their own specific life experience, and at the same time I'm wary of making any fixed rule... And I should add that the creator/writer/showrunner of a TV series has a pivotal part to play in making an authentic show. "But ya gotta know the territory" -- Meredith Willson, "The Music Man." Thank you.
