It is very sad indeed. What Frodo and Sam were seeing is the passing of an Age. The future generation of the continent will probably never see Elf-kind again, nothing but silent, faded ruins and old tales to tell of one of the great races.

@@kmallory100 that doesnt mean the elves were treated worse. They were part of hierarchy which included literal gods, so it is obvious they would not be at the same position as valars. That song is otherworldly. And this is why I like modern stuff very much. If this was the cartoon from the 70ies, this would be a jollygood dancing-ferry tune. Marius Loftum Peter Jackson’s vision of the elves was a bit more serious and melancholy than Tolkien’s vision. In the book they are far more jolly. It’s a small change but one I actually favor.
@DeFactoLeader
@DeFactoLeader 4 года назад
I actually think Tolkien wouldn't mind this version of the Elves. The Silmarillion especially gives the Elves a truly otherworldly feeling, they're beings so far removed from humanity that it's difficult to even conceptualise some of the earliest ones in their heyday; like Fingolfin, Feanor and Earendel. It seems that Elves could be very alien at one point to Tolkien's understanding of them.
@jasonfenton8250
@jasonfenton8250 3 года назад
@@DeFactoLeader Yeah, totally agree! LotR elves are kind of halfway between jolly Hobbit elves and grim/fateful Silmarillion elves. That's kind of what LotR is as a whole, the innocent world of the Hobbit smashing into Tolkien's epic Legendarium. Comparing the elves seen near Mirkwood in the Hobbit to, say, the tale of the sons of Feanor is night and day.
@DeFactoLeader
@DeFactoLeader 3 года назад
@@jasonfenton8250 That's very true. In fact it's appropriate in regards to Mirkwood because it's apparent that Elves were a somewhat degraded race by the Third Age. Not quite to the degree of Men, who were much closer to Elves millennia ago; but still noticeably so. It's why I like this scene so much, it subtly illustrates a journey meant to cleanse the Elvish soul, releasing them of weary lives they were never meant to experience. Generations of lingering in Middle-earth and generations of Elves that had never personally known the embrace of the Valar; resulting in bitterness, warlike attitudes and even kinslaying (not that it was all their fault, of course). Obviously some Elves were less like this than others, but the fact that _any_ of them were was the problem. It's a beautiful concept to me, really.

this reminds me of how Tolkiens son disliked the films saying it was an "action movie directed at 15-25 year olds", but how did he imagine it should be? he probably didnt want a big screen adaptation, i dont know, but i reckon if it was made to appeal to 60+ year olds it would probably have a shitty kitsch atmosphere and ironically be far more infantile than it was. also the action is obviously a thing since the books are about war

Mine too. The main reason of why I couldn't let go LOTR was for this feeling of ''there's something that is endging'', it isn't an end where good guys win and everything is back to normal and life is perfect, no, LOTR is a story where actions really have repercutions, and even if all wounds can heal, either they can leave a big scar or they never fully heal. You see that in the books, the Shire is reconstructed and is hella beautiful, but it isn't the same that Frodo and Sam left, Bilbo's tree isn't the same, neither are Gondor, Gandalf, Aragorn, or no one, and I can't even imagine how melancholic and depressing would Rivendel and Caras Galadhon look without the elves. Middle Earth feels better after Sauron than before, but it isn't the same. You are happy cuz good guys win, but you still lost something, something has changed. It is so real.
@cwbird12
@cwbird12 2 года назад
@@vegito9019 That’s why it is so good. It’s something people like Tolkien could only do. Probably part of the reason why fantasy authors who rip him off or aren’t too original don’t go that deep like him. On the surface LOTR is just another Good vs Evil cliche, and even tho our beloved characters don’t die (except Boromir) everything just kinda fades in the end. Frodo, bilbo, the elves, etc, go to the west and things are very different and I think that leaves a mark more than some people realize. 👍👍

@@Fan_Made_Videos Yeah true, but on the book, we just see that they are a bunch of elves, led by a Noldo, Gildor. Yep. For me it’s the song, and the wind and the light (that near-purple dusk with the deep greens all around). Look at the wind in the bushes as they run up the slight incline and in their hair as they watch. You could just sit there for hours watching with them. And while I wouldn’t have minded if it was ten times longer. what it adds to the world of the film is incredible for such a short scene: imagine living in a world where if you were out in the woods, you might just see walking nearby, a solemn procession of ancient beings who have known the world before the Sun even existed (the light of the two trees), and they sing as they walk and you know they are passing never to return. There is something so utterly magical about that. And it sets up two things so well: 1. This world is not our world. It is beautifully magical, yet deeply real and profound and serious. 2. This is a world characterised in all ways by twilight; by the passing of once-great things; a melancholic, autumnal world. Utterly beautiful. Makes me cry it’s so beautiful.
@Ti-up3dv
@Ti-up3dv Год назад
And also, the dialogue. because of all the other elements (music, setting, somber tone, whispered voices) things like “they’re going to the white towers” etc. just sound so much more heightened and profound. Like even if you don’t know what that is, the pure poetry of it is deeply evocative and stirring, and you have this sense that there are these other places of marvellous wonder and splendour in this world, that you’ve only heard whispering of, and this greater, solemn purpose which you can’t fathom. It’s this wonderful glimpse into the great cycles of the world that are too big for you to really understand. :)

Thats kind of what Tolkien intended. The ideas what, with the beginning of the Fourth Age, magic was fading from Middle-Earth, and with the departure of the Elves, Middle-Earth will become the Earth that we know today. Yes, Tolkien intended his mythology to relate to ours - it was part of a project to make an "English mythology"

IMO in the book Frodo is able to differentiate between tribes of elves but at this moment in the movie he probably just thinks that there are average wood elves around, not expecting to meet the high elves traveling to the heavens, but when he hears the Elbereth song - and he knew sindarin - he realised that they were acualy going to the heavens, so not wood elves at all :) And there is another reason for this "wood elves" of Frodo - in the book there were traveling companies of elves who dont go stright to the heavens but realy were constantly moving between Rivendell and Heavens so they could be like nomads, often living in the woods. So for Frodo these companies like the one they met in the book - Gildor's company - were "wood elves" regardless of the company members of different clans :)

The use of acting, directing, cinematography, wind, lighting, editing, color and music make this scene beautiful but one thing that doesn’t get looked at enough for the humanoid characters (hobbits, humans, elves) is makeup. Frodo and Sam look incredible here. The hair and makeup makes them look so youthful, which adds to the scene as this is before they face the worst trials of their mission.

They're praising their goddes, the maia Elberth Githonial. When the elves first awoke, it was she who set the stars in the night sky for all elves to see as this was the greatestlabour ever since the creation of Arda, and so they love her the most, as she herself is most associated with the light in Arda. They're just singing about her labours and their love for her and their return and desire to be with her again as she and her husband are queen and king over all other Maia.

Just a nugget of lore, I'd suspect those Elves would actually be Sindar mostly, perhaps some Noldor even, rather than Wood Elves (Silvan). The banner is that of High Elves. Many Wood Elves were still in Mirkwood/Greenwood, as most if not all had only ever known Middle-Earth. The High Elves that were still in Middle Earth at this point had seen the Undying Lands, and so had a stronger yearning than Wood Elves to go hither.
