Felt vs wood kick drum beater sound file 

I tried wooden beaters for a season just because the old school drummers did and because I figured if you strike the rest of the set with wooden sticks why not strike the bass drum with a wooden beater. The downside was it beat the hell out of my head and wore right through the bass drum patch in short period of time.

Amazing they all have a slightly different pitch.

Clearly wood wins at attack. Is plastic similar? Does a kickpad help with attack? Also, how much does batter head tension affect attack?
