Former FBI agent Jonathan Gilliam said that during a natural disaster, the federal government is supposed to coordinate with local governments, offering assistance where it's needed. However, in the wake of hurricanes Helene and Milton, Gilliam said the response has had more of a skewed political reaction and that the relationship between locals and the Federal Emergency Management Agency has become strained.

It's like Amazon, FEMA can have thousands of of workers, billions of dollars but getting it right to the injured citizens on the ground, the last mile delivery, if you will, is the hardest part, also due to the sheer scale of the disaster zone in Florida is unprecedented.

These talking heads have no idea about the real situation in WNC. The people here are spread over some of the most challenging terrain imaginable and the federal government has been coordinating with the state but the local governments tend to be very territorial so that creates a problem. We know how so much money has been spent. It is expensive to continually fly helicopters with food and supplies to reach these rural treacherous areas. This is not flat land like where Katrina struck and in Florida. The analysis by people who don't understand the real situation is not helpful. I can agree that these disaster situations have been politicized to the extreme and often lied about. This is about people's lives, so shut up and get busy helping and cease the commentary.
