I don't think anybody will ever do a full race alternating their lead leg because that would mean either going 14 steps for the full race (which will slow down the last 150m for sure) or going from 14 to 16 steps (which is too much of a difference in step length). The best compromise is what Sydney and Dalilah did and what Femke is doing now, 14 steps for the first 5-7 hurdles and fall back to 15 steps using your preferred lead leg.

We should keep in mind that Sydney only ran under 52s in 6 official races. And only 2 times was she faster than Femke. And both those times of 51.41s and 50.68s were last year within a month. I don't see why Femke could not have a similar progression towards the WC next month. I expect she will come very close, and if she has that perfect race she may even beat it. Such a shame that those two women don't race each other. I'd put my money on Femke this time. IAAF should change the rules. The top 4 or top 8 ranked athletes should automatically qualify for the semifinals. And not have to run series. This would allow Femke and Sydney to run both 400m and 400m hurdles during main events like WC and Olympics. Femke would love to, but with all the series and the bad planning it's not really feasible.

Great to see her finally have the breakout race that we all knew she had in her. With 51.45, even Sydney would have to be at her very best to guarantee a victory. Sydney has only run faster than this twice. Seems like Femke is finally getting used to her new stride pattern, which has me excited for what she’ll do moving forwards.
@rayb5069
@rayb5069 Год назад
Well with that logic Bolt has to be at his very best to beat Lyles. Bolt has only run faster than Noah Lyles twice in the 200m. In Fact, Bolt’s second fastest time 19.30 is only 0.01 faster than Lyles’s 19.31. Honestly 50.68 is extremely different than 51.4. In fact, the difference in those times vary so extremely that they are in different leagues in terms of track and field. However, Femke has such great upside that this doesn’t seem like it’s her limit. Sid doesn’t have to be at her very best to have beat Femke considering her “very Best” is significantly faster than this. On the other hand, Femke has to be at her very best to keep up with Sidney.
@Kobebok248
@Kobebok248 Год назад
You say Syd only ran faster twice, but that was during her most recent 400m hurdle races. Both times when a championship was at stake. She ended last year running a 3/4 paced 51.61 with absolutely no competition. She’s much faster now than when she ran 50.68. As Bol improves so is Sydney.

Sydney McLaughlin Levrone ran one otherworldly time under 51 seconds which even she may not be able to repeat. She has run many 51s. She deserves the title greatest 400 meter hurdler. Femke Bol has just run the 2nd fastest 400mh time ever and may yet go under 51 seconds. Year by year she improves in both the 400mh and the 400m yet so many downplay whatever she does and suggest she will always be second to Sydney. I think she is showing herself to be a great runner and who is the greater will be revealed in the years ahead.

Well as of right Now, we know who is greater, no need for years to come.. All this does is make Syd probably come back to hurdles and lower her mark, after an imperfect WR time.. she Def has more I. 400mH tank.. I think she can break 49.. if Syd breaks 48 in the open 400m it's fair to say she can do it
@rayb5069
@rayb5069 Год назад
Your assumption that Sydney “may not ever repeat” (may not get better) while simultaneously acknowledging that Femke will get better suggests that you’re biased towards Sydney in favor of Femke. Which is fine but your argument is flawed. Sydney has show tremendous progress and has taken the women’s 400mh to heights that most people never thought possible. She’s broken the WR on 4 different occasions and has gotten better, faster, and stronger every year! To even suggest that she “may not ever repeat” is going against the same logic you used to uplift Femke.
@maxhuang1179
@maxhuang1179 Год назад
@@rayb5069 I said she might not be able to repeat because I saw a video or read ( which, I cannot recall) where Sydney described being so spent after her world record that she could not get up off the track. That made me consider the possibility that for her that time might have been a one off. But I take your point that she continues to get better so bettering her wr is possible. So, to be clear: Sydney is a great runner who continues to improve, Femke is also a great runner who also continues to improve. She has yet to surpass Sydney. Neither has reached their peak. I stand by my last sentence that who is greater (ultimately) will be revealed in the years ahead.
@_MicZ_
@_MicZ_ Год назад
@@rayb5069 While I'm pretty sure you're right in that Sydney can still improve, there's also a thing as a physical limit on what is possible at a given time. If for example 50.00s is the best any female athlete could possibly do right now in the 400mH, it means that the maximum improvement for Sydney is 0.68s and for Bol it's 1.45s. So while Sydney comes closer to the absolute best time possible, the potential for improving might be bigger for the one further away from that absolute best time ... (side note : @maxhuang1179 I think you're talking about this part of a youtube video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ovoz6zCQrjw.html)

There are 3 women who have run under 52, and all 3 have something in common. All 3 of those women used a 14 step pattern on those sub 52 runs. There is no woman who has managed a sub 52 running the "typical" 15 step pattern. I said it last year when McLaughlin set that amazing record: you're going to start seeing any woman who CAN use this step pattern using it because it is a technical change that allows completion of the race more quickly. Even if the athlete gets no faster, they can shave time off their PB by being able to use fewer steps. Sounds easy. But isn't. It doesn't surprise me at all that Bol is able to use 14 steps, she's taller than McLaughlin and has a stride that is probably longer. I won't be at all surprised when she dips under 51, and wouldn't be surprised if she tops the WR this year at Worlds.

So for Femke a lot of training is focusing more on building strength (gym) and gaining speed (sprinting) and for Lieke it's more about endurance training while maintaining her natural speed. Sydney has definitely more natural speed compared to Femke, but Femke has naturally more endurance, so for the 400m (=long distance sprint) they both have to find the ultimate balance and in a way compromise their natural talent.
