Great idea to enhance the chain fence appearance. All these people commenting pretending to be structural engineers have nothing better to do. Comments like the wind will take out the fence, a hurricane takes out the most stable fences... the chain fence is secured in the ground and isn't going anywhere so why would the wood go with it. I love diy channels like this that look at more practical approaches.
@@homemend you have to be trolling. Right .. I mean that post isn't anchored to anything but has wire running thru it. I mean we all seen it wiggle that is not sturdy and as for checking if its level and square its worthless your at the will of what's there .. let's hope that change li k fence was put in place with eay more concrete than it needed even though we all know those can be force driven straight into the ground which is the usual practice since the usual dont get turned into a deadly sail.
@ptravers9077 as ridiculous as it is, if you built a whole fence sandwiched to the chain link, it probably would last longer than a lot of buried posts. Nothing to rot off underground
I've never built fencing for a living but after watching your video 1 time I am now an expert and I will now tell you and everyone else that makes videos on building fencing how to do it and I will point out all your mistakes. Thank you fellow fence builders
@@homemend 😂tell me you’re joking right?? He is 100% correct vertical is considered plumb. This difference might seem insignificant to you now; however if you ever work a larger project with multiple ppl or subs these differences are HUGE. Just take the time to learn the jargon rather than trying to be an arrogant prick to someone who is actually right.
He just used the term interchangeably like most people who aren't carpenters do. Obviously if something is being checked vertically it's being checked for plumb
not fer nothin' but you could have drilled through the original pipes and used carriage bolts or threaded rod to attach the 2x4s. No zip-ties necessary!
It will be stronger structurally if you go over the existing upright posts (plumb) and use self drillers or bolts through the metal post. The horizontal bars (level) are not designed for weight and will bend from the weight and the wind unless you weld them in place so they don’t pop out the fence will fail and fall over
@@homemend because you are teaching people Incorrectly. Does that answer your question. If you learn from people who know what the hell they’re talking about,Then you can do videos that I actually help people
No fucking way lmfao I ACTUALLY thought this was a thrown back from the first days of YT until I read this and saw it was uploaded IN MARCH 2023 ☠️ I can't believe people are really out here doing it like this today 😂😂😂
Might be a dumb qustion but could you get a longer 4×4 and put 4×4 maybe ever 4 to 8 feet and then put boars going from side to side about where the fence is so it could be a privacy fence so the bottom is meatel fence and top is lumber and the reason i asked for taller 4x4 is to cement some in the ground. Or would it be cheaper just to tear out and do all wood and its a 30 foot spand would it work and the ideal being to save money. Might be dumb like i said but any thoughts
Not a dumb question my friend. Watch the full length video… That was the idea was to create a 6 foot privacy fence out of a 3 foot chain-link fence without digging. Thanks for watching!
Must be nice to live somewhere with no building codes... His code inspection was when the neighbor brought over a 6 pack and the stood around drinking & saying things like " Yep it sure looks nicer since I can't see the sh!t in yer yard anymore!" Real Hank Hill kinda vibes 😂
Check for plumbness, not levelness. Plumbness is measurement term for verticleness, levelness is measurement term for horizontal flatness. Plumb & Level.
Ingenious. I guess you could do that with a 6 foot tall fence too and have say 2 feet above the existing fence and then add wood between the posts and give yourself 2 more feet of privacy from the nosy neighbors looking in.
People 💩 on zip ties but I used them to join chicken wire for a flight pen I have, it’s been years and they are just fine, I know your purpose for them wasn’t permanent but I’m just saying. Nice idea! Thanks for sharing!
A truck a spare tire and a chain will pull those right out, so nicely usually you can just put your new post and concrete right in. Depending on your soil and how deep might even be able to use a lawn tractor
Or just don't do the job at all then? Why half ass do a job that you will more than likely have to work over or fix your mistakes when you can get the correct tools and supplies needed for the job?
I didn’t check for plum i check for plumb. You seem to be one of those people who comments to correct other people…? Thank you for that…Just make sure your correction is correct lol. Thanks for sharing
The wind load on a four foot chain link fence is different than of a six foot wooden fence. The metal post will not be buried far down enough, the chain link post were not meant to do this. Will it stay up? Yes. Will it tear itself out and fall over. Yes. Would it have been cheaper to remove the old fence and install proper post? Yes. Especially if the fence falls on something or someone
Hey EJ. Just because you said all this I have to rebuttal… This fence now has been up for seven years. There are other ways of doing things and we should keep an open mind thanks for watching
Just the hack I need! Thx Homemend. I gotta 4' tall fence, and I can't stand it. No privacy, and not enough cash. I can't speak for everybody, but I saw your full video, and it works for me, zip ties and all!
That is awesome DK. It took a lot of flak but the idea rocked. Check out the seven year later video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-knpRxT3m7us.html
This is a pretty good idea I would venture to guess it would out last most 100% wood fences. The metal support of the existing fence would be a strong base. One suggestion would be a support strap to the metal post and ditch the zip tie. Actually, when the fence is complete there would be no need to zip tie and it would look nicer too. Great concept.
Bro looks like:" if you call this number right here on the screen you get an extra deal, with 3 additional packs of zip ties on top on the order of the 30 feet precut fence boards, for free! only for the next 30 minutes! "
Wow everyone is hating on this. The way I see it, if the steel posts aren't rusted and the concrete anchors are sound, I think this is a great idea. If you remove all the old stuff and put in all new stuff, this is a $5k fence. Do it his way and it's a couple hundred bucks. Also those zip ties will last longer than that steel post, they are not the weak link.
Thank you Peter. Finally this guy knows what’s up. Lol. The zip ties were not for longevity. They were just hold it in place while defense was built but people ran with it.
Good lord, I’m sorry dude. This seems like a perfectly handy trick for when ya don’t have the resources or ability to convert to wood or stone, I have no idea why everyone is so cruel. Good video man, keep doing your thing.💙
Hey hey John thank you… Did I get a pity comment? Lol I’ll take it. I find if you answer the haters with some love, they’re not as tough as they sound. For crying out loud I just filmed a project that I was trying. Thank you so much for the kind words. They are few and far between lol.
@@homemend I was honestly worried about that!😂felt morally obligated to throw my hat in. I’m not super handy, but I seriously don’t see anything wrong with your short!!Society is so demoralized, it seems. You’re rich in character and I’m very happy to have came across your video, enjoy your night!🙏😎
