The Webber sounds great. I ended up puttingva Jensen p10r in mine and it does make it sound open and warm..it takesca few weeks to "Break in" a new speaker so it might be good to hear this amp again in after 12 months of use. I would love to hear an Eminence GA10 through that amazing little combo.

A timely video for me, because I'm looking for a replacement 10" speaker in my new-old Gibson GA-14 "Titan" amp (less than 500 were made in 1959/60). This is said to be the same as GA-6, but with a 10" speaker, similar to a tweed Deluxe circuit. The original P10R was gone, replaced by an Italian Jensen P10R, which sounds really good, but I know from experience how much better a Weber replacement will sound. I have a 1959 Gibson GA-18 Explorer, which came with a stock P10R speaker w/original cone. I wanted to preserve the original speaker, and put something better in it, so I opted for a Weber 10F150 after researching it, and that was an excellent choice. The larger magnet and voice coil help higher bass, more volume, and smoother highs - sounds more like a 12" speaker. I already had a 12F150 in my Deluxe Reverb clone, which was recommended by many guitar players at the local blues jam ~15 years ago. The DR clone came with an Italian Jensen P12N, a great sounding speaker, but the 12F150 was a huge improvement, just perfect for this amp. Supposedly similar to a vintage Chicago Jensen C12N, but different. Ted Weber (RIP, he was one of the best), who I used to have conversations about speakers with, always recommended I get my old Jensen speakers re-coned, rather than buying a replacement clone from him, even though he made more money on selling new speakers than re-coning old ones, the point being they are not identical. Jupiter supposedly is more similar, but they aren't making large magnet speakers currently, claims they can't get the parts (?). Getting back to Weber, and my GA-14, I'm torn between getting another 10F150, or trying a 10A150 instead, even though it's twice as expensive, all I care about is getting the best tone. I have a 12A150 in an Ampeg amp, but haven't had a chance to hear it yet, because the amp needs servicing. I'm tempted to try it in my DR clone, but the F version sounds so good I'm hesitant to change it. Another aspect that I'm trying to decide, is the cone type, with the "T" cone often used in amps that are more middy, like Fender tweeds, or Gibson golden-era amps (mid-1950s - market 1960s). There are other cone options too, and dust cap option for that matter, like the "H" which supposedly moderates the highs. ANYways, sorry for my long comment, but this is an important question. I love speaker comparisons and discussions, because they are the most significant factor in creating the that comes out of your............SPEAKERS! ` Thanks for the informative videos Jack, always appreciated. Cheers!

As always, great job....as for speakers....can't go wrong with Alnico, especially British flavored alnico. Both guitars def have their own flavor, and I think the alnico enhances both. It seems to have brought out the clear, twangy tele notes and it brought out the low mid grunt of the P90s.
@JackFossett
@JackFossett 2 года назад
Yeah there's definitely more of a pronounced but still round bottom end -- one of the things I've liked about Weber speakers is they really sound more vintage (which I understand is a very subjective term) but they tend to have that big, deep resonance like old speakers did. They're less tight and focused but in a good way.

Great playing & video Jack. I get your point about smaller amps having cheaper parts, but that little amp sounds way better than the twin reverb in the last video with either of those speakers. Just a sweeter all round tone overdriven or clean. Just my opinion.
@JackFossett

It definitely has a lot more focus to it - probably more of a recorded tone historically also. The Twin is a very big and expansive tone.

I just got one these 68 Vibrochamps . I was playing it for while and was slightly disappointed that it didn't sound so great . I plugged in a Jensen C8R and the amp is all of sudden 50% improved. Full mid push ( very similar to the Weber alnico) ,nice bass and a bright clear treble. I have that alnico Weber speaker too which I will try later but now I am so relieved that I can keep this amp. It is a decent amp with the right speaker. That celestion is just terrible. I am playing a Goldtop with P90s in mine. Good review Jack.

@Dang...
@Dang... 2 года назад
Good comparison, nice playing, thanks. The Weber sounded brighter and that could suit some players. I love this amp, but I feel it's overly bright already so I'm looking for a speaker that can provide more depth. I'd like a speaker that doesn't need the Bass on 10. I tried a Weber 10A100T and that one didn't do it for me. I'm currently trying a 4ohm Guitar Warehouse 10" Veteran. So far I like it a little better. I may try some eminence speakers: Copperhead, Lil Buddy, Ragin Cajun, but they're 8ohms so that may create a volume problem. The tone quest continues. Bottom line: even with the stock speaker, this amp really excels. BTW I agree with Jack that this amp sounds closer to a mini Princeton than to a Champ. Champs are boxy. You can still get that Champ tone with this amp by turning the treble and bass off.
@CraigFlowersMusic
@CraigFlowersMusic 2 года назад
I haven't had any issues with low end. But then, I put my Champ in a corner. Where your amp is in the room will change the low end response far more than any other factor. Acoustics change their behavior below 200Hz.

I don’t know, I think ceramic has its place. I liked how it sounded more upfront with distortion. Personally, I think this amp is small enough that you can own two of. Then have one with an Alnico and the other with a higher end ceramic American voiced speaker

@ramilrodriguez8340

Great Jack!! I thik that the celestion sounds good. The weber alnico sounds kind of more tridimensional, it has a “reverb kind of compression” and has a way more detailed top end. However the top end is too much for me but no big deal as you can always just roll back the treble a bit. I guess I would prefer something in between . Both speakers sound just fine. After listening to the cleans I didn’t expect the weber to sound that good with overdriven sounds but it does sound great. From those two I choose the weber but the celestion sounds good too.
@JackFossett
@JackFossett 2 года назад
Yeah the Weber really rounded out the overdrive and added some nice bottom end IMO. The stock speaker is definitely no slouch, like I said I gigged with this amp a lot over the summer and really enjoyed it without any mods at first.

What Ohm rating is the Weber? Since the stock speaker designed as a 4 ohm. While an 8 ohm would work, the ideal seems to be the 4 Ohm? Hence my question. Thank you!

just my 2 cents but for the price fender wants for this little 5 watt champ amp they coulda easily included a nice jensen alnico ( left the bell off and it woulda fit ) i keep lookin at it but i just can't justify the price of 899 for one .. if they put an alnico in em and let em go for 649 they woulda sold a shiton of em .. and they coulda still sold em with the celestion for 599 ..i'm sure some guys would prefer that speaker .. i wouldn't .. and fender can buy an alnico for a lot less then you or me could .. i won't say jensen would give em away to fender but they would give em a great deal .. they would love to get their speakers back in as many fender amps as they could .. at one time fender and jensen went together like peanutbutter and jelly .. or like drunk and disorderly . either way .. nice video tho .. ya done good .. i'm lookin for a mustang lt 25 vs the champ reverb ..
