Hi Paul. The combination that you have here- a '62 slab J-Bass strung with flats, was crucial to the ealry Zeppelin sound. It's been said that John Entwhistle once said: "Zeppelin taught me how to play bass." With deep rooted British humor and tongue in cheek...there was a lot of truth to that statement. Jones is the king of bass. Your sound and playing are REALLY nice here my friend. I very much enjoyed listening. I too am a fan of the Slab Jazz Bass...I have five of them. There is NOTHING like a slab Jazz Bass. I tell all my player friends that who have no idea what it is I'm telling them. When someone comes to me and says "how did you learn how to play?" I simply tell them- "Go get an old P-Bass and the first five Zeppelin albums and get to work."
@Paulosrecordsofficial

As a Who fan I have never heard Entwistle say that JPJ taught him how to play bass. Entwistle was revolutionizing bass playing whilst JPJ was still looking for work as a session bass guitarist. Sorry fo going off subject but those Zep fan boys do my head in. By the way great tone with those TI's they are a top flatwound bass string, they sound great on a P Bass too!

Hi Nerkoids, thanks for the kind words! Yes, I tend to use the fingers of my left hand that arn't fretting to do the muting. That and the fact that the flatwounds create a 'tic tac' tone quite easily. Good luck with your new vintage modified squier, they really are very good instruments (I have a vm squier mustang bass). The necks are excellent as are the pickups imho. Thanks too for the request to get some more old school funkiness together...I'll get on it!

Thanks for sharing a great groove without the madness of going left and right at the same time on the fret board! (smile) Your tone is wonderful. The 62-reissue Jazz is one of my dream basses; but I may just get 62-reissue p/up's, new pots, shield it, and call it a life. Also, your fluidness on the fret board is impressive..looks as if you're hardly moving your fingers except for the pull-offs...that's smooth. Be safe.

That honestly just sounds like pure butter. Killer tone. I'm a huge fan of vintage instruments. I have a 74 Gibson grabber. A 75 g3. And my main bass is a 1972 fender precision. I would love to get a "high tier" vintage bass like a early jazz bass or a 1957 p bass. But man dropping 15-20k on a bass would be hard to do.
@Paulosrecordsofficial
@Paulosrecordsofficial 4 года назад
Thanks! I'd like to try an early 70's P bass one day. I bet it's amazing. Yep, the price of vintage instruments these days is nuts. Even the refins are pushing it. I guess it's collectors pushing up prices more than players. Which is a shame.
@2002nkpB
@2002nkpB 4 года назад
@@Paulosrecordsofficial yeah. I just turned 18 a couple months ago but back when I was 15/16 I first got into the vintage side of things. I remember seeing even back then for a 60 jazz bass stack knob was barely pushing 16k. Now just like 2.5 years later I see them going for 40k even. It's honestly ridiculous. The most I could really feel good spending on a bass is around 10k-15k. But I suppose for certain pieces of musical history it would be worth it. I just wish I was born like 5 years earlier with my same taste lol stuff was so much cheaper. When my dad was a teen back in the early 80s he had a friend who had a 64 jazz bass and a 60 p bass. He showed me old band photos where he let him borrow them. The kid traded them BOTH on a Kramer. Those basses could easily worth over 30k now a days and he traded them back in the 80s for practically pocket change. If only he had a crystal ball 😂
@Paulosrecordsofficial
@Paulosrecordsofficial 4 года назад
@@2002nkpB Congrats on turning 18. I was your age in the 80's and should've bought a couple of stack pots back then! Just didn't cross my mind (I was broke too) so played a Tokai Jazz Bass most of the time. It was a really nice instrument, very well made and playable. I'm sure one day the instrument of your dreams will fall into your hands...they have a habit of finding the people who need them the most. Maybe a collector will lend you one. This happens in the classical world a lot. Rich collectors lend their mega-expensive violins and 'cellos to young gifted musicians. Also, there are a lot of great instruments out there that are not vintage Fenders. Fender Custom Shop, Nash...etc. With the right pickups, strings and set-up you can get 99% of the way there I think. All the best with your bass journey. I kind-a envy you, so much learning material out there on the internet!

What do you think about the tension of the TI? are they too lose? i had a set on a semi-hollow bass but the tension was very low and since i tried a set of LaBella's on my jazz bass and ruined the neck to the point of having to replace it (i'm glad Fender warranty covered it) i wan't to try flats on my jazz again but don't want to kill another neck, maybe the tension varies from one bass to another?
