Hey Everyone! Today we're going to be reviewing the Fender Meteora Player Plus 4 string bass, one of Fender's newest designs and part of their Player Plus series. This bass features the same 3 band preamp as the other basses in the series, but what sets this one apart is the beefy Fireball pickups and the retrofuturistic body shape that looks like something out of the Jetsons. Is this a forward thinking Fender or another flop? Let's find out!
This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with SIT Foundation Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at sitstrings.com/

@FransvandenBergeMuziekschuur
These pickups have a history. They are 4 low output jazz bass pickups. Glued together to form two humbuckers. I think they are both 4 wire pickups. They are one of the last designs of Bill Lawrence. At first they were developed for a signature bass for Roscoe Beck.
@lucastperez
@lucastperez Год назад
So interesting! When it showed the pickups more closely right at the beginning of the video (for example at 0:51, I just paused and looked at it for a moment haha), I imediately saw that it at least looks like 2 single coils glued together.
@FransvandenBergeMuziekschuur
@@lucastperez you can do a lot of interesting wiring options with 4 wires per pickup. Tho I’d like to turn this bass into a tractor bass. Two single coils against the bridge and one bisonic pickup in the front position.
@xavierandradev
@xavierandradev 11 месяцев назад
The Roscoe Beck pickups are not two J pickups glued together (like the Meteora ones). Bill Lawrence's design has an extra magnet just under the string hidden under the cover (for 22 magnets total per pickup), so in practice each string "sees" 3 magnets. This is roughly the same concept behind Bill's later J45 and P46 pickups.
@FransvandenBergeMuziekschuur
@FransvandenBergeMuziekschuur 11 месяцев назад

Such a cool bass, frustrating too with the pickups I agree, especially since the double jazz bass style humbuckers are usually 2 full single coils in a bigger housing. I remember seeing a 00s pbass deluxe that had them with a mod that allowed between 60s and 70s j tones

A Meteora is the only bass I currently feel like I *need* to add to my collection. It's got perfect specs, looks cool as hell, and since it's a Fender will retain its value on the used market of the future. Wish I could pull the trigger on one right now!

My Schecter Raiden, which I bought used for about 300, has two humbuckers like the meteora. Has three knobs: volume, volume, tone. The tone knob can split the pick ups to single coil which is odd that this expensive bass can’t do that

I bought mine last year in the same finish, as I needed a dedicated bass for permanent drop C tuning for my stoner/doom/psych band. Funnily enough I pretty much only use it on passive mode with the pickup pan set to 100% neck pickup. I basically wanted a P-bass (on steroids) with a jazz neck and this was the next best thing my local store had available. I loved it the moment I took it in my hands and silverburst is my favourite finish, so I just had to take it with me. No regrets so far. Also, since it's not another P or J bass, it'll probably sell relatively poorly. I'm willing te bet they're gonna be a lot harder to find within a year or two.

I don't get Fender's current obsession with this particular bridge, especially on the American Ultra series. It's not a terrible bridge, but it's definitely not as good as the 3-screw bridge they put into the American Professional (I and II) series, and doesn't offer a string-through-body option. I've been a "Fender guy" since I started playing bass in the early '90s, but I am really disappointed with anything with the Fender name on it at the moment. Squier is turning out better instruments! (At least, if you grade on a slight curve factoring in the price… but I seriously sold my American Ultra Jazz and replaced it with a Squier 40th Anniversary that I like better, for about 1/5 of the price!)

I love double jazz pickups that you can switch between series and parallel, they’re super versatile. Seymour Duncan makes the NYC pickups that are essentially these pickups in an EMG35/40 housing that replicate this versatility. I wish Fender would embrace them more outside their weird models, like the old Blacktop Precision from the early 2010’s.

I bought this on a whim last year , not a fan of battery operated basses but gave it a shot . 3 months in the electronics went out. Sent it back to Sweetwater and they couldn’t fix it so I paid alittle more and got a made in Japan aerodyne passive Jazz bass. The neck dive was so bad I sent that back too. By then I’m $400 away from an American Fender so got one of those instead . Finally no issues . Many of the Mexican Fenders are not far way price point from an American Fender . Just work some OT and save a step.

Body shape is an acquired taste. Tone is good, but not enough tone options for the configuration. Headstock shape should have been more complimentary to the body and should have come with ultralight tuners for that price (as well as a hard shell case). No passive tone control (true passive option) tips the scale to the dealbreaker side. Nice that it is a good player and again, the tone is actually quite good.

I mean you could rip out the controls. It’s cut for 4 knobs and a mini-switch, so with a push-pull volume for each pickup, and stacked concentric knobs for tone (maybe hi, mid, low and a Q sweep for one of them (if possible with what stacked concentric pots and active eq are available) and keep the on-off switch as is.

@Waggel86
@Waggel86 Год назад
Well, you can technically route out the neck pocket and pickup cavities. You'd still need to come up with a new neck. 5 string neck are quite a bit wider while still having tighter string spacing. Yes, 5 strings fit on a 4 string neck, but the spacing would be so tight it's unplayable. At that point going for a full custom build might actually be more sensible.

I like it. But I don't love it. I especially like that Fender managed to create something unique that's not looking like any Fender before, but that still looks like a Fender and has that vibe. But it's a shame that they stuck with the square neck joint, and the pickguard's shape is essentially nice, but lacks refinement. It doesn't flow very well with the body shape, looks like they didn't finish the design completely. I like the sounds which are not really P or J, but something that should work for everything you'd use a P or J for, and something more, and still sounds like a Fender. However, I agree, I'd also miss the passive tone blend. The lack of other switching options help keeping it simple and keeping a distinct character. With some refinement, and some ingredients of the Roscoe Beck and/or the Dimension, it would have been a winner for me.
