The original string tree on the american standard is drilled further back around the 2nd (A) tuning post line, therefore if you point the replacement tree backward on the Mexican Player you get a slightly better brake angle off the nut and much closer to its American cousin. You dont have to drill a hole for the pin. Just snip the pin off and sand/file the base and attach in the original hole, it fixes rock solid without the pin. For me this mod absolutely improved tone on those strings in that position. Without the pin, you can of course try it both ways.

Cool thanks for the info bud! I found that replacing the tuners with staggered locking ones makes a difference to the strings brake angle on the G B & E strings, I had a deluxe strat years ago that had these with no tree's needed. The main reason for the tree was that I didn't want there to be a hole in the headstock. Thanks for watching

@@MattsGAP Yeah staggered makes a lot of sense, I may well do the same. Oddley American Fender Pro 'Strats' add a second tree, bewildered why they dont just deal with the tuners, maybe just cheaper I guess. All the best.

Very nice. I did a similar thing with my FSR MIM tele, put Fender Classicgear tuners in, a 50s round string tree from Stew Mac, reversed the reverse control plate back to normal, put Custom Shop 51 Nocaster pickups in it, and Gotoh compensated brass saddles to replace the basic round brass saddles. It's a great guitar now.

Nice! It doesn't take much to upgrade a mexican guitar to high specs. Well worth it for me.

Interesting- I did nearly same. FSR MIM , fender locking tuners plus c/s no casters. Is it really worth changing the saddles - much impact?

@@bartlettpsj oh yes it really is. No more strings moving around and the intonation is noticeably better.

Great job, appreciate it. Mex fretboard jobs could harm you, read a lot about the bad luck of others. On YT videos it's prominent on the Vinteras. Mine was fine. What do you think about doing the sandpaper work on the painted neck, also when cutting the frets, don't you stript the coating (on the edge) and opens the wood for dirt and sweat. Maple should be sensitive.
@MattsGAP
@MattsGAP Год назад
Yeah I have sanded necks to remove finish, and if you're really careful you can avoid damaging paint when dressing frets but I prefer rosewood fingerboards so that's less of an issue for me. Also I am lucky to have some nice, expensive guitars and mostly these have the level of finish detail I am looking for. I do enjoy less expensive guitars as well and grew up fixing issues on them so it's good to have experience fixing inexpensive guitars! Thanks for all the comments!
@rotepillenfresser4544
@rotepillenfresser4544 Год назад
@@MattsGAP Thanks also, it's good for your channel/algo ;) What I don't understand: When you sanding carefully you also will take some or all the coating on the edge. Depends on the graining and pressure, but I think you will take off the coating when you have to cut and sand the frets (don't mean the fingerboard). I do also own expensive axes, everything fine with them, but you know the QC, especially by Gibson. Not everything leaves the factorys fine. See the latest videos to the "cheap" Greeny around 3200 Pounds. Horrible!
@MattsGAP
@MattsGAP Год назад
Yeah, Gibson have always had the same issues, I have an LP from 2022 and a ES335 from 2004 both are plagued with stain bleed and filing makes in the fretboard/binding. But I love them, best sounding guitars I own. You get the good with the bad from Gibson. I am happy to put up with the crap. You will remove finish if you sand too far. Not olif you use a tiny file to sort the fret ends and just buff them out. Depends on how aggressive you are with it.
@rotepillenfresser4544
@rotepillenfresser4544 Год назад
@@MattsGAP Stain bleed occurs especially in the binding, but yours was in the finish I suggest? That's bad. Not fimiliar with the english expressions. The Les Paul was my first guitar and I love her (Paula in German, female) beside the some issues, most was the setup and it had been done by the shop for free (I paid fot the LP more than you do today and everyone complains about prices), she's great. She got already the natural aging. Do you own a Gibson ES-335? Congrats! These days I don't want to spend that money and don't know if I should try the very cheap Epi for around 500 pounds (you have to have luck, 1 of 20 should be fine). Thanks for your support. Do you still know the distance for the pub setup for thr twisted ones? I know you done this by the CS guide and feeling. Is it a standard (2 mm) or vintage (2,4 mm) pub and what's the 6th. string, should be high E? Closest should be 1th. E bridge and greatest 6th. neck?

What doesn't goes in my head is. Why do spend a lot of money to modify an already good guitar? Weren't it easier to directly buy the more expensive Guitar for that money? I have a player series Telecaster and it's a great instrument for that price. I think about buying me the butterscotch one as a second one. It looks awesome with the black pick guard.
@MattsGAP
@MattsGAP 4 года назад
Hi Stephan, oddly enough you can buy something pretty close to what I ended up with, however modding a guitar for me is about the journey, I'm not going to leave the guitar like this either, in fact the black guard is back on it now and I'm wondering whether to put a bigsby on it. I get as much enjoyment out of changing the components as playing the guitar. You're absolutely correct about the player series they're already really good guitars.... hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine! Thanks for watching

It’s about making a guitar your own, learning something new, and being proud of your custom DIY instrument. I’m doing my first major upgrade on my new guitar, and I’m so excited. I already know I’m going to love the guitar more than any I’ve owned because it’s going to be upgraded by me, and with my choices. My hands. I can’t buy the guitar I want. It’d probably be way more expensive to custom order what I’m building myself. Instead I found a good deal on a base guitar, and ordered the components I want! :)

The bad thing about the Fender locking tuners is, they don’t make them in gold left handed.

@@MattsGAP we sure do. I’m in the middle of changing over to gold hardware and the only thing I cant find are direct drop in tuners in gold for a lefty Tele. The only ones I can find are a set where I need to drill a new hole for every tuner. Not happy about that.
